Janice L. Gayan, 64, of Escanaba, passed away early Tuesday morning, June 21, 2022 at her home. She was born on September 5, 1957 in Escanaba, the daughter of Ernest and Marie (Ogren) Klein. Janice was a lifelong resident of Escanaba and graduated from Escanaba High School in 1975. She went on to earn an associate's degree from Bay College and a bachelor's degree from Lake Superior State University. On April 8, 1989 Janice married Paul "Curly" Gayan at St. Patrick's Church in Escanaba. Together they shared two children and 33 years of marriage. Janice previously worked for Mead Credit Union and later Harnischfeger from 1983-1987. Most recently, she was employed with the Michigan Education Association from 1987 until her retirement in 2010. In her free time, she enjoyed golfing, Zumba, pickleball, and gardening. Most of all, Janice loved spending time with her family and friends. She will be fondly remembered as someone who was always full of life and energy, always willing to lend a hand, and an incredibly hard worker. Janice is survived by her husband, Paul "Curly" Gayan; children, Brian (Melody) Butler and Angela (Jason) Baumhover; grandchildren, Hadley & Brecken Butler and Rowyn & Callahan Baumhover; brothers, Dwayne (Theresa) Klein and Dale (Jeanette) Klein; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Marie Klein; mother-in-law, Celeste (Kenny) Gayan; father-in-law, Andrew Gayan; brother-in-law, Rodger Gayan; sister-in-law, Mary Gayan; and her beloved dog, Scout. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 27th from 11:30 a. m. to 3:30 p. m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S 13th St, Escanaba. The funeral service will follow at 4 p. m. at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 615 S 30th St, Escanaba, with Pastor Paul Doletzky officiating. At the conclusion of the service, a meal will take place in the fellowship hall. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.
