Janice E. Garlets age 87 of Sturgis, Michigan and former longtime resident of Mongo, Indiana passed away Thursday morning October 5, 2023 at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born June 3, 1936 in LaGrange, Indiana daughter of the late Harry L. and Ruby O. (Boyd) Garlets. Janice resided in Sturgis for the past 13 years coming from LaGrange, Indiana. Most of her life was spent in Mongo, Indiana where she was a graduate of Mongo High School with the class of 1955. All of Janice's working life was in the restaurant industry. For many years she was employed in the cafeteria of the Glass House restaurant on the Indiana Toll Road and for a short time at Fazolies restaurant also on the Toll Road and in her younger years she worked in the cafeteria at Mongo Schools. She was an active longtime member of the Mongo United Methodist Church where she loved singing in the choir and being a member of the United Methodist Women. Janice is survived by her brothers: Jerry Garlets and Donovan Garlets; nieces and nephews: Jeff Lint, Steve Lint, Randy Lint, Jenny Martinez, Daniel Garlets, John Pagels, Bruce Pagels and Kristie Pagels and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Emma Pagels and Shirley Lint; brothers: Allan Garlets and Gilbert Garlets; nephew: Dennis Pagels and Niece: Julie Schroeder. Funeral services celebrating the life of Janice E. Garlets will be held at 11:00 A. M. , Monday, October 9th at the Mongo United Methodist Church in Mongo, Indiana. The Rev. Lynda Kay Riddle-Taulbee, age 63, a lifelong resident of Sturgis, MI passed away Monday, November 27, 2023 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI. She was born May 23, 1960 in Grand Rapids, MI a daughter of Robert D. and Janice M. (Holtz) Riddle. Lynda was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1978 and also took a few college courses at Glen Oaks Community College. She was previously married to David Wayne Miller and this marriage ended in divorce. On August 23, 2023, she committed her love to Michael Taulbee. She was a homemaker most of her life, staying home to raise her children. She did work for a short time at McDonalds and American Axle. Lynda enjoyed crocheting, dancing, traveling, especially to see the oceans, modeling, both shows and runway modeling, helping family and friends plan their weddings, playing cards, and spending time with her family. She is survived by her children: Ryan Miller, Danyel Miller, Kathryn (Martin) Miller-Munson, and Aryc Hargreave; 2 step-grandchildren: Zoie and Eli, her mother: Janice Riddle, a sister: Lisa Riddle, a half-sister: Debra Slater, a uncle: James H. Holtz, 2 aunts: Mary Martin and Susan (David) Seagle; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her father: Robert Riddle, grandparents: John & Kathryn Holtz and Opie and Floye Riddle, a uncle: Aaron Riddle, 2 aunts: Elsie Seagle and Carol Sandy, 1 niece: Carrie Gay. Ellen M. White age 97 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away Friday morning November 24, 2023 at Thurston Woods Villa in Sturgis. She was born May 5, 1926 in Sturgis, Michigan daughter of the late John "Roy" and Bertha (Ross) Strang. Mrs. White was a lifelong Sturgis resident and graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1944. On June 18, 1944 she married Charles E. "Bud" White in Sturgis. He preceded her in death September 28, 2004. She had been employed as a bookkeeper by Lonespruce Farm Services in Sturgis for 37 years. She had also worked at the Transogram Company in Sturgis and while Bud was stationed on the east coast while serving in the U. S. Army she worked as an elevator operator at the Empire State Building in New York City. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sturgis. Mrs. White had been active in 4-H where she taught knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed square dancing and crafts especially making intricate bead Christmas ornaments. She loved playing cards and could often times be found on her I-Pad or computer working jigsaw puzzles or playing card games. She is survived by her daughter: Debra Bouchard of Battle Creek; sons: Douglas White of Sturgis, David (Barbara) White of White Pigeon and Dennis (June) White of Brevort; granddaughters: Tara Nisevich, Rebecca (Justin) Nichols, Cathi (Mike) Cioffi, Michelle McKenna, Tamara Samsome; great grandchildren: Brianna Martin, Nicholas DePascale, Summer DePascale, Nora Nisevich and Wyatt Nisevich; great great granddaughter: Autumn Samsome; sister: Vera Ecker of Sturgis; brother: Kenneth (Judy) Strang of Sturgis and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter-in-law: Noreen White; son-in-law: Jim Bouchard and brothers: Raymond, Lewis, Lloyd, Richard and Bobby Lee Strang. David Allen Jones age of 70 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan following a short illness. He was born July 1, 1953 in Sturgis, Michigan son of the late Gordon and Jean (Short) Jones. Dave was a lifelong Sturgis resident and graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1971. On October 31, 2009 he married Sherrie Lynne Tennis at the family home in Sturgis. Dave retired from Ross Laboratories in Sturgis following 25 years of dedicated employment. Following his retirement he accepted a job with Walmart in Sturgis where he worked from 2008-2020. He was a member of Three Rivers Moose Lodge #474. Dave had a passion for powered parachute flying. He built his own aircraft and trained others to fly. He loved working with his hands and building. One of his many projects was the addition to their home so Sherrie could have her craft room. For several years he coached Rocket Football in Sturgis. He enjoyed bird watching and participated in pool, golf and bowling leagues for many years. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife: Sherrie; daughter: Justina (John Anding) Jones of Sturgis; son: James Jones of Sturgis; step-daughters: Carrie Wesley of Kalamazoo, Holly (Jon) Urick of Mendon, Erin Holder of Centreville and Jamie (John) Sobie of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren: Mykel, Seven, James, Chauntaya, Makenzie, Jakyra, Mya, Christopher, Mason, Olivia, Chase, Myles and Sage; brothers: Monty (Connie) Jones of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Rick (Michelle) Palmer of Sturgis and several nieces and nephews. Chris Howard Buckhold, age 83, of Sturgis, Michigan, passed away early Tuesday morning November 21, 2023 at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. Chris was born July 31, 1940 in Three Rivers, Michigan, son of Howard and Frances (Tessin) Buckhold. He was a graduate of Three Rivers High School with the class of 1958. Following graduation he enlisted in the US Army, serving from June 1958 - May 1961 with the military police, with a tour of duty in St. Nazaire, France. While in France he married Paulette Marrie, this marriage ended in divorce. After his discharge from the Army he come to Sturgis and served on the Sturgis Police Department from 1961-1967. Chris worked in the insurance and investment business for Lutheran Brotherhood for 25 years and retired from Midland National Insurance Company. On May 5, 1973 he married Deann (Dimmick) Cominator in Battle Creek they were married 50 years. Being a lifelong Lutheran he loved and served his Lord, family and friends and his country. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Sturgis. He served on the St. Joseph County 911 Central Dispatch policy board, Western Michigan Fire Chiefs Association, St. Joseph County Conservation Club and the Lazy Boys Bass Club. For 38 year from 1962 - 2000 he served on the Sturgis Rural Fire Dept. , retiring as Assistant Fire Chief. Chris enjoyed bass fishing in his Ranger boat, firefighting and morning coffee at McDonald's. He had a mind for numbers and figures, was always up on current events, and a staunch Republican. Chris is survived by his loving and dedicated wife Deann; stepchildren; Lora Cominator & William Cominator, step grandchildren; Bo (Claire) McMillin, Ashley (Kenny McClain) McMillin & Bailey (Matt) Barnell, grandchildren; Jerry Caudill & Eric (Jessie Croons) Buckhold, great grandchildren; Amelia & Aryana Buckhold, step great grandchildren; Cameran, Mia, Blakelie, Noah & Wyatt McMillin, Bryleigh & Makaela McCain, Adisyn & Raegan Barnell, sisters; Janet Smith & Jean Rice, brother David (Cheryl) Buckhold, sister-in-law; Leann Davis, brother-in-law; Fred (Dee) Dimmick. David J. Alvey of Sturgis, Michigan, loving husband, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend passed away, Wednesday November 15th, 2023, at the age of 70, at the Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. His heart was unfortunately too weak to continue, but memories of him will live forever in the hearts of his loved ones. David was born December 14, 1952 in Kalamazoo, Michigan son of the late Thomas James and Evelyn Irene (Jones) Alvey. He met the love of his life, Joan, in high school by joining the school choir. A first date and a stolen first kiss turned into fifty-one wonderful years of marriage. David was a residential builder in Sturgis for twenty-five years. He then was a commercial construction supervisor working for various companies. His last project was the addition at Radiant Life Church in Sturgis. He loved music, spending time with his family and building. He built more than just homes though. He built a legacy of love and respect by sharing his faith with his family. The home he created was full of love and laughter. David is survived by his loving and dedicated wife: Joan and five children, Gabriel (Sherri) Alvey, Joanna (Danny) Holland, Joel (Angela) Alvey, Eden (Adam) Hile, and Stephen (Savannah) Alvey. He was a very proud grandpa to Lilly, Keira, Ben, Kalvin, Brynn, Kaylynn, and Paisley. He was a wonderful brother to Charles (Pam) Alvey, Robert (Ann) Alvey and Richard (Susan) Alvey. Charles Frederick Monroe age 90 of White Pigeon, Michigan passed away Sunday, November 12, 2023 at the home of his son, Tim in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born February 14, 1933 in Sturgis, Michigan son of the late CharlesRobert and Faye (Miller) Monroe. Mr. Monroe resided in White Pigeon since 1998 coming from Sturgis where he was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1951. On October 15, 1955 he married Barbara E. Garton in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She preceded him in death October 30, 2009. Chuck retired in 1998 from Burr Oak Tool & Gauge in Sturgis following 37 years of dedicated employment as a tool & die maker. He was a member of the Three Rivers Bible Church in Three Rivers. Chuck was proud to have served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War earning the rank of Corporal. He enjoyed fishing especially ice fishing and was a loyal fan of the University of Michigan Wolverines football team and the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings. He is survived by his daughter: Jan (David) Adamson of Willard, Utah; sons: Mark (Patricia) Monroe of LaGrange, Indiana and Tim (Kris) Monroe of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 12 grandchildren: Scott Adamson, Rachel (Joshua) Britten, Kirsten (Trentice) Schipper, Summer (Lewis) Moreno, Candice Adamson, Shelemiah (Chris Toper) Blood, Joshua Monroe, Bethel Monroe, Rebecca (Phillip) Mosher, Anna (Dennis) Bontrager, Sarah (James) Cosgrove and Benjamin (Edlin) Monroe; 16 great grandchildren; two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Dennis Hlathein age 88 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away Thursday evening November 16, 2023 at his home. He was born October 31, 1935 in Moulmein, Burma son of the late U Ba Thein and Daw Mya Khin. Mr. Hlathein came to the United States in 1969 from Burma. He resided in Sturgis since 1981 coming from Stevensville. On January 19, 1961 he married Dorothy Lazarus in Rangoon, Burma. Mr. and Mrs. Hlathein fled the country of Burma in 1969 to escape deteriorating conditions after a communist military dictatorship seized control a few years earlier. Mr. Hlathein obtained his B. S. degree in metallurgical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the U. S. in 1957. He admired the great freedoms and opportunities available in this great country. Upon his return to Burma, it was incredibly disheartening to witness the unfortunate decline of his motherland. He then vowed to give his sons a better future in the United States of America. As he made plans to bring his wife and sons to America, he was labeled a traitor of Burma and was forced to cut ties with all the family members he left behind. He immigrated to the U. S. in 1969. In 1970 Mr. Hlathein accepted a position at the Bendix Corporation in St. Joseph and worked there for 10 years. He later retired from the Sturgis Foundry in 1997 following 17 years of dedicated employment. He was an avid photographer. He also had a passion for electronics of all types. He was an early adopter of personal computers. He thoroughly enjoyed seeing them get more powerful and more affordable over the years. He is survived by his wife: Dorothy: two sons: Terence (Rebecca) Hlathein of Lexington, Kentucky and Patrick (Alison) Hlathein of Caledonia; grandchildren: Brian and Ruby; two brothers, two sisters and several nieces and nephews. Eugene Norman "Pete" Shears age 77 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away Saturday, November 11, 2023 at the Goshen Hospital in Goshen, Indiana. He was born November 14, 1946 in Sturgis, Michigan son of the late Ernest and Anna Marie (Winkleblack) Shears. Pete was a lifelong Sturgis resident and graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1964 where he excelled in athletics especially baseball. Following his graduation he furthered his education at the Fort Wayne Business School. On June 16, 1972 he married Janet Phillips in Angola, Indiana. Pete retired from Morgan Olsen in Sturgis following 38 years of dedicated employment as a machinist. He also worked with George Mayer on the gladiola farm in Burr Oak and bartended at the American Legion in Sturgis for several years. He was a member of the Lima United Methodist Church in Shipshewana and Eagles Lodge #1314 and Loyal Order of Moose #574. Pete enjoyed hunting, fishing and in his younger years playing baseball. For many years he was a league bowler at the Sturgis Bowl and he was an avid loyal fan of the Detroit Tigers, Lions and Red Wings. He is survived by his wife: Janet; daughter: Jennifer (Michael) Miller of Goshen, Indiana; sons: Kevin (Meredith Hill) Shears of Sturgis and Jeffrey Shears of Battle Creek; grandchildren: Ashley Shears of Houston, Texas, Jacob Shears of Centreville, Bradley Shears and Edward Shears both of Howe, Indiana and Gabriel Miller of Goshen, Indiana; sister-in-law: Sharon Shears of Sturgis and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother: Royce Dean Shears. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 P. M.
