Janet Joyce Shawn, 73, of Kearneysville, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2023, at her home. Born July 4, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Lewis Livingston and Caroline Emma Welsh Livingston. Janet was a wonderful mother who enjoyed music and spending time with her sister. She loved her dogs and animals in general. She is survived by her son, Chris Livingston, and wife Charlene, of Charles Town; daughter, Susan Jens, and husband Kevin, of Kearneysville; brother, Jim Welsh, of Hedgesville; sister Cathy Barnes, and husband Marty, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, and four grandchildren: Colin, Gavin, Lillian, and Gabrielle. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

John Allen Hook, (US Air Force Ret. ), 74, of Berkeley Springs, WV, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 16, 2023 while under the care of the Hospice of the Panhandle, Kearneysville, WV. Born on January 15, 1949 in Havre de Grace, MD, he was a son of the late Francis T. and Alice L. (Holloway) Hook, He also was preceded in death by his wife, Vicki Frances (Clem) Hook on May 26, 2012; a brother, Norman F. Hook and wife Janet and two sisters, Norma Jean Haslacker and Joyce Ann Haslacker and husband Robert. Mr. Hook graduated from Belair High School in Belair, MD in 1968 and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served his country during the Vietnam War and was attached to the 167th WV Air National Guard. He was a life member of American Legion Post # 60, Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post # 3522 in Charles Town, WV, Loyal Order of Moose in Berkeley Springs, UAW # 149 and the 167th Air National Guard Retiree's Club. He also was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Martinsburg, WV, an annual member of Red Men Lodge # 84, Williamsport, MD and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Michigan. John was a strong, kind and extremely generous man who enjoyed gardening and fishing. More recently he enjoyed outings with his brother-in-law Lee and just sitting with his canine companion Tilly, watching Gunsmoke. Surviving is his son, John Hook and wife Kristi of Bunker Hill, WV; his daughter, Victoria Knipple and husband David of Martinsburg; five grandchildren, William P. F. "Frankie" Hook and wife Courtney, David R. Knipple, Lucretia P. Knipple, Haleigh L. Hook and Skylar P. Hook and four great grandchildren, Bentley D. Knipple, Sydney J. Hook, William A. "Liam" Hook and Keiren W. "Little Grasshopper" Reeley. Also surviving is his sister, Alice Lorraine Singleton of Havre de Grace; his brother-in-law, Lee Edward Haslacker of Martinsburg; a close friend, Eileen D. Stotler, his canine companion, Tilly, many nieces and nephews and other family and friends. Friends will be received at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Monday, November 27, 2023 from 5-8 p. m. In accordance with John's wishes, the casket will be closed. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Romney, WV, on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at 11:00 a. m. with Father Thomas Sebastian as celebrant. Interment will be in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Levels, WV, where graveside military honors will be accorded. Walter "Jack" Junior Harlow of Kearneysville, WV, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2023, in Charles Town, WV. Born December 28, 1931, in Alexandria, VA, he was the son of the late William and Lula Harlow. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Jack was a U. S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War. He retired as a chief engineer with the U. S. Government for the A. F. L. C. I. O. He was very devoted to his family and dedicated to serving his church, where he served on the High Council of Winchester, VA stake for nine years. He is survived by three daughters, Debbie Kidd and husband David, Patricia Phipps and husband Leland, Jackie Cline and husband Marty; three sons, Danny Harlow and wife Alice, David Harlow and wife Sue, Kenny Harlow and wife Lisa; twenty- six grandchildren; as well as numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie in January of 2017; one sister, Lula Geanette Harlow; two brothers, William Henry Harlow, Harry Howard Harlow; one granddaughter, Sarah Jenkins; and three infant great-granddaughters. Services will be held at 1:00pm Thursday, November 9, 2023, at the Latter-Day Saints Church, 237 Carriage Drive, Harpers Ferry, WV. Mrs. Violet Lucille Emory Monninger, 86, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, and formerly of Hagerstown, died late evening, Monday, October 23, 2023, at Inpatient Hospice House of Hospice Of The Panhandle, Kearneysville, West Virginia. She was the wife of the late Robert Lee Monninger, who preceded her in death on December 30, 2006. Born April 3, 1937, in Pen Mar, she was a daughter of the late Marvin Lester and Ethel Patterson Emory. She worked over 20 years with the custodial staff at Hagerstown Community College, Hagerstown. Mrs. Monninger was a Brethren by faith. Surviving are her daughters, Susan A. Raber and Sandra J. Scott and husband William "Gord", all of Martinsburg; five grandchildren Samantha Burker, Renee Moore, William Scott, Jr. , Sierra Morrison, and Krista Kees; by fourteen great grandchildren and one step grandchild; as well as a cousin, and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, Mrs. Monninger was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Bobbi Jo Burker; and by three sisters, and a brother. She was the last of her immediate family. Aedan Reed Smith, 16, of Kearneysville, WV passed away Thursday, October 19, 2023. Born March 18, 2007 in McAllen, Texas, he was the son of Chris Smith and Amy Smith. Aedan was a Junior at Jefferson High School, where he played trumpet in the band. He also played valve trombone in the jazz band, and piano, electric, acoustic and bass guitar recreationally. Aedan was in the Health Sciences & Technology Academy (HSTA) a program through WVU where students enter STEM based degree undergraduate and graduate programs. He was in the James Rumsey CISCO Program for computers and in dual enrollment at Shepherd University. Aedan was aspiring to work in Pharmacy and computers and start a band with his friends. He is survived by his loving parents, Chris and Amy Smith, sister, Tehya Smith, one brother-on-the-way, Gunnar Deacon Reed Smith, Paternal Grandmother, Linda Braden, Great Uncle and Aunt, Chuck and Denise Smith, and numerous extended family that deeply loved him in Texas and Louisiana. He is preceded in death by his Paternal Grandfather, Scott Braden and Maternal Great- Grandmother, Helen Garza. Kenneth Wayne Reed, 68, of Kearneysville, WV passed away Sunday, September 17, 2023. Born August 27, 1955 he was the son of late Florence and Harry Reed. Kenny was an incredibly devoted family man, and consequently, considered most of his clients as family. Even more than his own love for cars, he had greater joy in seeing his clients' happiness with the work he had done on their vehicles. He thoroughly enjoyed having his sons working alongside him in the business for so many years. One of Kenny's favorite leisure activities was camping. He is survived by his wife, Robin, at home; three sons, Chris "Ken" Reed and wife Carrie, of SC, Kevin Reed of Kearneysville, WV, Mark Reed of Kearneysville, WV; one daughter, Krystal Javor and husband, Frank "Taz" of PA; step-children, John Ours and wife, Stacy of Harpers Ferry, WV, Sarah Russell and husband, William "Buddah" of Winchester, VA; six grandchildren, Myckayla and fiance, Andrew, Haley, Hunter, Jadelyn, Zach, Olivia; one sister, Linda Reed; one brother, Terry Reed; and cousin, Donnie Kelley; aunt, Jo Kelley; and his faithful K-9 companion, Harley Davidson Reed; numerous other cousins, nieces, and nephews.
