"Janet (Jannie) Marie Beck, 74, passed away on September 24, 2023 at Seasons of Life in Woodruff, surrounded by family. Janet was born June 24, 1949 in Evergreen Park, IL at Little Company of Mary Hospital. She graduated from Marywood School in Evanston, IL. Janet began her career at Dr. Warren Cedar dental office. In 1974 she moved to Minocqua and began work at Dr. John Butler dental office as a dental assistant. On April 8, 1978 she was united in marriage to Warren W. Beck at St. Anthony's church in Lac du Flambeau by Fr. John Drummy. After 21 years in the dental business, Janet changed careers and started employment with Pukall Lumber Company, joining the sales staff after a few years. She remained in sales until her retirement in 2011. Janet had several hobbies which included sneaking off to the ceramic shop, caning chairs, and her favorite of them all, showing her beloved Samoyed dogs throughout the Midwest and beyond. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Woodruff and was a woman of deep faith and Irish Heritage. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, George and Eleanor (Hunt) Kane; brother, Roger; sister, Diane; and brother-in-law, Matt Kelter. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Warren; sisters, Nancy (Stewart) Kane and Marian Kane-Grade; brothers, Kevin Kane and David Kane; nieces and nephews, Todd Mark, Jenny Kelter, Joe Kelter, Kelly (Kane) Altschwager, Hattie Kane, Liam Kane-Grade, Finola Kane-Grade, Brighin Kane- Grade, Taylor Kane and Evan Kane; cousins Collette Kohnke and Carol Rossi; aunt/Godmother, Dorothy Levine. Janet is further survived by her brothers-in-law, George Beck and Tom Smigiel; sister-in-law, Barb Beck; nieces and nephews, Craig Beck, Trina Schenk and Tara Slagoski. "Camille T. Smigaj, age 91, of Lac du Flambeau, entered into Eternal Life on December 2, 2023 at home surrounded by her loving family. Camille was born in Milwaukee on August 11, 1932. She was employed with Lakeland Medical Associates/Marshfield Clinic for 30 years. Camille enjoyed her retirement. She kept busy volunteering at church and she loved being involved with her grandchildren. Camille is survived by her husband of 58 years, John; children, Holly (Daniel) Geiger of Lake Tomahawk and Craig (Stacey) Smigaj of Carpentersville, IL; grandchildren, Danielle, Curtis, Summer and Madison. She has expressed her desire to have no formal public funeral. The family will have a private service at a later date. Jeffrey Dillenberg

"Jeffrey M. Dillenberg, 67, of Harshaw passed away peacefully at the Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff on November 30, 2023. He was born in Rib Mountain, Wisconsin on October 17, 1956, to Franklin and Cleo (nee Schider) Dillenberg. He grew up on a farm and graduated from Hortonville High School in 1975. After the family sold their farm, they moved to Harshaw. He worked for many years at Twist Drill in Rhinelander. It was at this time that he got married and started a family. Jeff enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing pool. He also found joy in all of the nature that the Northwoods had to offer. Later in his life, his grandkids kept him busy. He especially loved attending their events and school functions. His four-legged friend Teddy was by his side for everything. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. Jeff is survived by his two children, Jeff (Holly Fritz) Dillenberg Jr. and Trica (Kevin) Dervetski both of Rhinelander; four grandchildren, Brayden, Brodee, Alina, and Bailee, three brothers and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Charles Rayala Jr

Age - 88

"Charles M. Rayala, Jr. entered into eternal life on Monday, November 27, 2023. Charles "Charlie" was born on December 22, 1934 in Bessemer, Michigan to Charles Sr. and Lillian (nee Nissila) Rayala. He was the eldest of 9 children. In 1955, Charlie enlisted in the Army and served with the 3rd Calvary in Germany. After serving his country, Charlie purchased Little Star Garage in Manitowish Waters and shortly after, married his wife of 65 years, Hester Organist. Charles and Hester had 5 children, Chuck (Jeanine), Brian (Rene), Gene, Jackie (Mike Michaelis) and Roger. Charlie was the first Fire "Chief" of Manitowish Waters and served in that position for 27 years. He was also involved with the rescue squad and was instrumental in the construction of the Fire Company's new building at the time; which now serves as the town's youth center. Charlie also served as a Fire Warden for over 50 years. He served on the Vilas County Board for 32 years and had served as County Board Chairman. For several years, he headed the Highway Commission Board for the county and was also involved in the Mental Health Board. Charlie was a Town Supervisor for Manitowish Waters and eventually was elected Town Chairman. Outside of his local achievements, Charlie was a proud lifetime member of the American Legion and National Rifle Association. Charlie also became a President of the local Lions Club and was very proud to be a part of that organization. He held a strong devotion to his community and was extremely proud of his Finnish heritage. Most everyone in the Northwoods came to know Charlie, whether it was through Little Star Garage, snowplowing or the many boards, committees or organizations he served on. Charlie had compassion for anyone who was down and out and needed a helping hand. This was a trait that presented itself numerous times over the years. Charles in preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lillian; brother, Mike; sister-in-law, Sherry and step grandson, Zeke Jonas. He is survived by his siblings, Don (Janice), Audrey, Jerry (Paula), Martin, Carolyn (Bob Kovar), Bonnie and Tari (Pat Kohlin). He is survived by his wife, Hester and 5 children and their spouses. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Ty (Becky), Travis (Katie), Chelsey (Nick), Shelby (Jordan) and Monica (Nick); step grandchildren, Brittany (Matt Schultz), Zach Jonas (Kandace), Lyndsey Jonas and Natalie (Matt Ritchie); and numerous great grandchildren. Charlie leaves behind a legacy of community service. He led by example on how to care and help others. For this reason, the family asks that in lieu of flowers or gifts, that anyone would direct their generosity to the Manitowish Waters Fire Company or to the Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters, two organizations that Charlie was proud to be a part of. Shirley Gauger

Age - 95

"Shirley Gauger (nee White) of Minocqua, took the hand of Jesus and left this earthly life on November 11, 2023 to enter Eternal Life with God, her Lord and Savior. She passed peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born December 7, 1927 in South Dakota to Loren and Sarah White. The family moved to Milwaukee in the early 1930's after losing the ranch in the Dust Bowl. After high school, Shirley attended Northwest Institute in Minneapolis earning a degree in Medical Technology. She returned to Milwaukee, taking a position as a Research Assistant at Lakeside Laboratories. She worked her way up to SeniorResearch Assistant and into a supervisory position. It was here she met Don Gauger, the man who would be by her side for the next 71 years. While working at Lakeside, her research led her to write a paper on the Pharmacology of Diuretics. She was the first woman to present a scientific research paper at a medical conference in New York. Shirley and Don married on April 25, 1952. Four children completed their family, Roxanne, Wade, Brian, and Carl. They moved to Grafton, WI in 1958 where she became very involved in the community, at her children's school and in her church. She was a constant presence at St. Paul's Lutheran School, volunteering her time whenever and wherever needed. She painted the mural of the school's mascot, a panther head, on the gymnasium floor. When it became evident there was a lack of sufficient medical care close to home, she was pivotal in helping establish the Grafton Medical Center and recruiting physicians to staff it. She was the general manager of the facility until 1975. In 1975, she and Don made the trek north to Minocqua and made it their permanent residence. Shirley found employment as a bookkeeper for Howard Young Medical Center during the construction of the hospital. Upon completion of the hospital, Shirley moved on and worked as a bookkeeper and tax preparer for a number of area companies and CPA's. She then ventured into real estate, starting her own agency and selling property and managing rental properties for Lakeland State Bank. In 1984, just as the real estate market was cooling off, she received a job offer from World Hospitalities as a comptroller. Since the kids were all grown, she and Don decided to move to Texas to explore this new opportunity. Although they were successful in their ventures in Texas, they missed their home and family in Minocqua and returned in 1988. She continued to be involved in her community, working as a dispatcher and Administrative Assistant for the Minocqua Police Department for 7 years. She retired in 1996 to be a full-time Gramma. She volunteered at her grandchildren's school just as she did at her own children's school. She watched her grandchildren grow into well-rounded, self-sufficient, successful adults. As each grandchild married, sheproudly celebrated this milestone with them. Shirley was overjoyed when she became a Great-Gramma---over and over again. She said this made her life complete. She is survived by Don, her devoted and loving husband of 71 years, her children Roxanne (Steve) Gresch, Wade, Brian and Carl (Meg) Gauger. Further survived by 5 grandchildren, Grant (Karah) Hunter, Ben (Emily Milton) Gauger, Shane (Becky) Gauger, Brittany (Eric) Curtis, and Michelle Gauger and 7 great- grandchildren, Lilly, Lacey, Mason, River, Colton, Nico and Vivian. Also survived by many nieces and nephews, her church family from Rock of Ages and a multitude of other friends. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings. The family wishes to extend thanks to the ADRC of Oneida County, the staff at Minocqua Health and Rehab for the exceptional care they gave Shirley during these last few months, and to Compassus Hospice Care for the compassionate support they gave not only to Shirley, but to Don as well, during this difficult time. John Waube

"John Frederick Waube was found deceased on November 16 in the woods behind his home in Lac du Flambeau, WI. He loved these woods and the bears and wolves that resided there. This was the one year anniversary of his wife Jackie's passing and we believe that he is now at peace with her. The American Indian Movement was important to John, he gave his time and effort and encouraged others to do the same. Family and friends have always been important to John, in fact if you were a friend, you were family. John had a full life enjoying many sports and activities but especially riding his Harley, playing harmonica and in his youth surfing and skateboarding. John is predeceased by his father Gordon Waube and wife Jackie . John is survived by his mother Nancy Porter, children Joshua Waube, Jamie Ford, Matthew Armstrong, Jackie Ann Young and Angel Young as well as sisters, brothers, grand children and many additional friends and family whom he loved and was loved by. Jared Poupart has been there for John in life and in his passing, and our family is eternally grateful for all he has done. He started the ceremonial fires for John on November 16 and will keep them burning until the end of his spiritual journey home to be with his loved ones. "Show more

Thomas Lindeman

Thomas "Tom" Lindeman, age 88 of Clintonville, WI and formerly of Minocqua, WI passed away peacefully at the Veterans Home in King, WI on December 5th with his family by his side. He was born on March 17, 1935, in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Predeceased by his first wife Joan (Hartman) Lindeman, parents Franklin and Viola (Yetter) Lindeman, and sister Nancy (Lindeman) Fischer. Tom worked in the boat business with Hobby Smith, then on to his own landscaping business in Minocqua. He went on to help build and become superintendent of Timber Ridge Golf Course. After his retirement from Timber Ridge, he began restoring vintage wooden boats, carving decoys and folk art. He enjoyed hunting birds with his boys, fishing, boating, collecting antique sporting items, folk art, ship watching but most of all he enjoyed his family. His love of laughter, pulling pranks on his kids and wife will carry on with his children. He will be remembered for the twinkle in his eyes and his kind and loving spirit. Survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Penelope (Handley) Lindeman; Brother, Dennis (Debbie) Lindeman, children; Martha (Todd) Michaelson, Wade Lindeman, Gretchen (Michael) Sasse, Joseph (Cynthia) Lindeman and Jacob (Hannah) Lindeman. Grandchildren; Sarah (Steve Kowalski) Leone, Kathryn (Nathan) Waite, Alicia (Zachery) Zirbel, Roger (Abigail) Haglund, Mitchell Haglund, Jayson and Jackson Lindeman. Great Grandchildren; Callaway and August Waite, Mila Zirbel, Otto and Roger Kowalski. Further is survived by his in-laws, and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial Gathering for Tom will be held on Friday, December 15th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Nimsgern Funeral Home Chapel with a Memorial Service at 1:00 pm with Military Honors. Bernice Watland

"Bernice M. Watland age 100, of Park Falls, died on Monday November 13, 2023, at Marshfield Hospital in Minocqua. She was born on June 22, 1923, in Butternut, the daughter of George Sr. and Petronella (Smola) Meindl. She was a graduate of Butternut High School. On June 26, 1946, she married Clarence L. "Sparky" Watland in Park Falls. The couple lived in Park Falls where Bernice worked various jobs including MacGregor Litho, Dr. Miller, Flambeau Hospital, and the Chamber of Commerce. In 2022 she moved to Milestone Senior Living Woodruff. Bernice enjoyed living on Butternut Lake and boating with her husband and snowmobiling. Family and grandkids were her love. Dancing was definitely a passion and she polkaed, waltzed and two stepped her way around WI. Loved to play cards especially Bridge. In her later years she embraced online games with her Kindle. She was very talented and could sew, knit, paint and was known for her beautiful lace doilies. She is survived by her (2)daughters: Nancy Lee Nelson of Westfield and Coralee (Larry Voigt) Erickson of Minocqua, (5)grandchildren, (7)great-grandchildren, (1)great-great-granddaughter, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clarence, her son-in-law Stanley Nelson, (4)sisters: Clara Meindl, Leona Greer, Laura Meindl, and Helen Burch, and (5)brothers: George, Walter, Elmer, Albert, and Herbert Meindl. James B. Cation, 97, of Milan, Illinois, formerly of Minocqua, Wisconsin passed away on November 22nd, 2023, at his home. Born in Peoria on July 28, 1926, to Ernest and Olga (Ohmann-Belsley) Cation, he married Betty Jane Smith on September 12, 1948, in Peoria, Illinois. She preceded him in death on October 6, 2017. Jim is survived by 3 children (and spouses); Becky (Chuck) Leib of Milan, Illinois, Jim (Diane) Cation of Minocqua, Wisconsin, and Gary (Mary) Cation of Lombard, Illinois; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. First and foremost, Jim cared about his family. He will be lovingly remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle. Jim was a proud graduate of Bradley University. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, and was a former member of Ascension Lutheran Church, Minocqua. Jim enjoyed a lengthy career with Illinois Bell Telephone and AT&T. After he and Betty retired to Minocqua, Wisconsin, he worked for the Lakeland Times and spent considerable time volunteering in the community. He was a member of the volunteer fire department, served as President of the Board of the Howard Young Hospital, was instrumental in establishing the Friends of the Library in Minocqua, and was a member of the Oneida County Zoning Board. He also served as Board President of the Minocqua Country Club. Jim enjoyed spending time with family, playing golf, reading, and playing cards. A Celebration of Life in Jim's honor will be held a later time. No visitation is planned. Interment will be private.
