Jane Coombs String, age 73 of Pilesgrove, formerly of Woolwich, died Thursday, August 31, 2023. Born on May 17, 1950, she was the daughter of the late George & Elizabeth "Betty" (Beal) Coombs. Jane was a 1968 graduate of Woodstown High School. She and her classmates had a memorable senior trip to Williamsburg. As a young adult, she was known to go back road racing with the boys from "the shack" in her blue 1970 396 SS Chevelle with a cowl-induction hood and black racing stripes. She always missed that car. A lifelong farmer, she was raised on her family's potato farm in Upper Pittsgrove and became a dairy farmer alongside her husband in her adulthood. In addition to farming, she was a medical lab technician at Elmer Hospital. She was involved in 4-H her whole life. In her younger years, she was involved in sewing and cooking, and served on 4-H Council. As an adult, she was involved with dairy along with her husband and children. She was very active in Pittsgrove Presbyterian Church. She had served as a trustee and session member, chaired the finance committee, served on numerous other committees and helped to restore the manse. She was also involved in the Swedesboro-Woolwich school system, serving as president of the Board of Education, president of Little League, and active in the Swedesboro-Woolwich Soccer Association, traveling to soccer tournaments all over the country with her kids. She also was a Salem County Women of Achievement award winner and a member of the D. A. R. She loved her pets and enjoyed caring for them and the hummingbirds that visited her home, and she enjoyed spending her time at the Cowtown rodeo. Most importantly, she loved her family, and she was fiercely loyal and very tough. She loved her grandkids. She was the first person to call in an emergency and always knew what to do and who to call. Jane is survived by her husband, Donald String; her daughter & son-in-law, Stephanie & Oak Ale; her son & daughter-in-law, Jeffrey & Nichole String; her grandchildren, Gabriella, Rebecca, Allison, Matthew, Patrick, and Emily; and her brothers & sisters-in-law, Jim & Betty Coombs and John & Donna Coombs. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, September 13th in the Pittsgrove Presbyterian Church, 312 Daretown Road, Upper Pittsgrove. Immediately following the service, family and friends are invited to the Elmer Grange for a luncheon. Arlene S. Long of Daretown went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 20, 2023, surrounded by her family. Born the daughter of Howard and Marguerite (Campbell) Sims of Eldridge's Hill, Arlene was a graduate of Woodstown High School. This is where she met her husband, Jesse. She retired from Upper Pittsgrove Township BOE where she was a school bus driver for over 30 years. Arlene loved to dance and had a love for country music. She liked to crochet and has made a blanket or two for every family member. She enjoyed baking, cooking, and feeding lots of dinner guests. She always had a house full of children and big Sunday family dinners. She enjoyed going on bus trips with friends and trips to Lancaster with her sister and daughters. She is a lifelong resident of Daretown where she had the closest and best neighbors in the world. She is the loving mother of eight children, who she devoted her entire life to, and she is survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and her four-legged baby, Remi. She is survived by her children, Barbara and Ervin Foote of LAC, Richard Long of Elk Township, Steven "Shorty" Long and Carol of Joplin, Missouri, Barry and Nina Long of Pilesgrove, Susan and James Heller of Quinton, Jeffrey and Jackie Long of Pilesgrove, and her son-in-law, Jack Denham of Woodstown. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Jesse, her daughter, Donna Lynn Denham, her son, Kenneth, and her daughter-in-law, Jane Long. Also, several siblings have gone on before her, her sisters, Lois Trew and Betty Wilson; her brothers, Raymond, Charles, Barry, George, Wayne, and Frank Sims. We could never have wanted for a better mother. God loaned her to us for over 91 years and now has prepared a place for her alongside the love of her life. David C. "Davey" Gray, Jr. , age 32 of Woodstown, died Friday, November 17, 2023, in his home while surrounded by his family. Born in Salem, Davey had been a lifelong Salem County resident. He had attended Pennsville Memorial High School and was a professional truck driver for Seashore Asphalt Corp. in Clayton. Davey loved spending time with all of his family. He enjoyed fishing, music, and watching football, especially the Raiders. He also enjoyed traveling with his family on vacation. Carolyn Dare, age 86, passed from this life on Thursday, November 16, 2023, to be home with Jesus, the Lord she loved with every ounce of her being. She was born to parents Carlton and Kathryn Keen on May 22, 1937 in Salem, NJ and grew up in Quinton. She later met and married Samuel Dare, living the rest of her life in Monroeville, NJ. Always a welcoming blend of brightness and bluntness to everyone who knew her, she deeply loved her family and was an active part of their lives. She was predeceased by her husband Samuel Dare, siblings Betty Bieszcz, Joyce Locuson, & Carlton Keen, sister-in-law Virginia Schneeman as well as brothers-in-law Larry Schneeman & Tom Peraino. She is survived by sisters-in-law Doris Peraino & Thelma Keen as well as brother-in-law Lynn Locuson, children Dennis (Nancy) Dare & Kathy (Greg) Parks, grandchildren Brian (Kayla) Dare, Beth (Andrew) Khair, Rachel Parks, Bruce (Danielle) Dare, & Samuel (Leah) Parks, and great-grandchildren Ava, Zachary, Emily, Hudson, Rylee, Nathaniel, Natalie, Savannah, Samuel, Gabriella, Ryan, & Brody. Carolyn worked at First National Bank of Elmer for years, but of more importance to her was her membership at First Baptist Church of Elmer. She had served on the missions committee and loved teaching the JOY class there, even until the Sunday previous to her death. She prayed for hours every day for her family and church, and conversation with her did not go long before she spoke of the Bible, which she loved to hear and study. She was an avid reader in general and loved music, especially hymns. Having volunteered in her retirement years at the Ranch Hope thrift shop, she continued to live a full life, whether it was enjoying day trips to Lancaster, PA or her Thursday dinner club friends. Her smile and spunk will be sorely missed. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 25th at 11 am at the First Baptist Church of Elmer, 209 Broad Street, Elmer, with the family receiving visitors beginning at 10 am. Cynthia Avila Betia, also known as Cyn, passed away suddenly after her short battle with Pancreatic Cancer on November 8, 2023. She was 74. Originally from Butuan City, Philippines. She earned her BSN from University of Santo Tomas School of Nursing in Manila, Philippines 1970 before relocating to the US. Cynthia is survived by her beloved children Carlo of Piedmont, CA; Kristina of Mt. Royal, NJ along with her son, Christian (her only grandson) and her youngest daughter Erika (mini Cyn) along with son-in-law, Kyle Kania of Austin, TX. The eldest of five, she is also survived by her siblings Vivian Reichle of Gold Coast, Australia; Andres Avila, Jr. of Butuan City, Philippines; and Ricardo Avila of Butuan City and several nieces and nephews. Cynthia was preceded in death by her grandfather Ramon Pareja, grandmother Nicolasa Pareja, father Andres Avila, mother Angeles Avila, and brother Miguel Avila. Cynthia was the most loving and caring individual whom devoted her life caring for Dialysis patients. An avid traveler, she lived life to the fullest and never turned down a good meal with loved ones. She enjoyed watching football and also her favorite TV movies. A beautiful soul lost far too soon. She will be deeply missed by all that had the pleasure of being loved by her. Her memory cherished in our hearts, forever. Danny Sims, age 60, passed away at home on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Danny was born in Reno, Nevada to Kathleen Lane Sims and Frank Sims on January 23, 1963. That same year, he moved to Woodstown, New Jersey with his father and remained a Salem County resident throughout the rest of his life. Danny graduated from Woodstown High School in 1981 and began working as an electrician for the family business, Sims Refrigeration. As the owner of the business, Danny served as a prominent member of the community, greeting each customer with his signature kindness and sense of humor. He served on the board of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the Ashbrooke D. Snelbaker Home. Danny was also a member of the Osceola Snowmobile Association. In his free time, Danny enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, Philadelphia professional sports, and spending time with his family and friends. The life of the party, Danny was a natural at making everyone laugh with his fun and goofy personality. He will be remembered for being loyal, caring, sweet, and humble. He was loved by all of those he encountered. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Janice Sims; daughters Rachel Sims and Amanda McManus (Vince); his mother, Beatrice Sims; his siblings, Karen Walker (Danny) and Kelly Sims (Cheryl); and many more aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and nieces. Olga C. (Henry) Pool, age 102 of Woodstown, passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. Born in Mickleton, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Marie Henry. After graduating from Swedesboro High School and later Strayer College she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for 19 years. Olga was a dedicated wife, mother, homemaker, caregiver, and friend. During WWII there was a major shortage of gasoline for cars, so for her summer vacation she rode her bike to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware with her best friend. With her suitcase strapped to the back of her bike they went from Salem to Pennsville Ferry, to Dover and Rehoboth Beach and back home again. She attended Asbury Methodist Church, was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of NJ, and a charter member of The Night Owl Bicycle Club. In her early retirement years, Olga and her husband Harry traveled together sightseeing and visiting every state, except Hawaii. Olga is best known for being a social butterfly with many sets of high heels and matching purses for nights out dancing. She and Harry loved ballroom dancing and playing pinochle with the "Card Party". Olga was a great baker, often freezing a stockpile of cookies and brownies for her loved ones. Even in her later years her social calendar was busier than her grandchildren! Olga was a resident of Friends Village for 18 years where she was active on many committees and planned and participated in activities for the residents. In her 90's she was crowned champion in Wii Bowling and Bocce ball. Olga is survived by her children, Linda C. Williams of Pilesgrove, Nancy P. Scarpaci of Turnersville, Stephen H. Pool of Centreville, VA, and Barbara P. Hogate of Woodstown; her grandchildren, Lora Lowery and Jeffrey Bowser, Emma and Allen Willliams, Tony and Andrew Scarpaci, Brad Pool and Jenny Gordon, Greg Hogate and Natalie Griffith; her niece, Gail Mossman, nephew, Steven Foote, and 14 great-grandchildren. Olga was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Harry Pool, her sisters, Flora Foote and Lillian Bliven, and her parents, Frank and Marie Henry. Betty Jane "BJ" Richman of Mannington passed into the arms of her Savior on Sunday evening, October 15, 2023. Born March 20, 1932, in Bridgeton, she was the daughter of Harry K. and Beatrice (Craner) Hamilton. She grew up in Bridgeton's Second Ward (South Pine Street) and graduated from Bridgeton High in 1950. In 1954 she married Merwin D. "Pug" Richman and moved to his family's dairy farm in Mannington. She worked beside her husband while raising their family and was active in the Parent's Association at Mannington School, Mannington Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary, and in Salem County 4-H, where she was Leader of the Buttons and Bows and Alloway Thumpers Clubs. She also clerked briefly at Aberfoyle in Bridgeton and in the Mannington Township Tax Assessor's Office and was a volunteer librarian. She enjoyed cooking for a crowd and was involved in Oyster Dinner fundraisers for Mannington Fire Company and Salem County Fair Association, cooked monthly meals for Cumberland County Second Fifties, and helped develop the Compassionate Kitchen and Woodruff College Book Fund ministries at West Park Church. Her Chicken Pot Pie, Mac and Cheese, Cookies and Apple Pies were epic. BJ was a lifelong member of the Fourth Methodist/West Park Church congregation, where she cooked and served on several committees and mission boards throughout her life. Most recently, she filled her days with phone calls, puzzling, quilting, and baking. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Merwin D. Richman, Sr. in 2018 and her oldest child, Betty Jane "Dollie" in 1966; sister Mildred Gibe and brother Harry C. "Buddy" Hamilton. She is survived by her children, M. Donald Jr. and Kimberly Richman, Carol Joan and David Suiter, John and Melanie Richman, all of Mannington, and James and Olga Richman of Somers Point; her cherished grandchildren Amanda, Matthew (Devon), Zachary, Elijah, and Talayden Richman, Aidan (Alison) and Devon Suiter, and Hanna and Bradley Richman; step great granddaughter Janessa Algarin; great grandchildren Reid Richman and Baby Suiter, due in December; sister-in-law Kathleen Hamilton and brother-in-law Robert Gibe; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; Annette Devitt, who she considered her own, and her West Park family. She loved them all dearly. A Memorial Celebration will be held on Sunday, October 29 at 2pm at West Park United Methodist Church, 625 Shiloh Pike, Bridgeton, with visitation beginning at 12:30. Born August 17, 1932, in Camden NJ to Joseph and Elberta DeMaris. Joe was the oldest son, he is preceded in death by his brother Bud DeMaris, Patsy Dahlinger. Joe is survived by his sister Libby Hahn. Joe grew up in Pitman NJ and graduated from Pitman HS in 1951. He was in the Merchant Marines and was drafted into in the US Army in 1953. Joe briefly considered a military career after he completed Officer Candidate School (OCS). Instead, he opted to start a family and pursue college. In 1955 he was married to Frances Louise McCarty that everyone knew as "Pat" 1961 was an especially busy year for Joe, he was discharged from the US Army, graduated from Drexel University with a BS in Metallurgical Engineering, his wife, Pat, and his mother, Elberta, both graduated with Education degrees from the same university at Glassboro State Teachers College in Education, and his first son Joe Jr. was born. The following years of 1963 and 1964 were also good to him, with the birth of his second son George and third son Edward. Joe worked as a registered professional Metallurgical Engineer at Dupont from 1959 until his retirement in 1992. During these years, Joe also earned a commercial pilots license and professional captain's license. Joe is survived by his three sons: Joe Jr. and his wife Melody DeMaris and their two daughters Sarah & Chris Owen and Rachel and Matthew DiNunzio; George and his wife Margaret DeMaris and their son, Matthew DeMaris, and daughter, Abigail DeMaris; and Joe's youngest son Edward DeMaris. David M. Lewis III, age 78 of Woodstown, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, September 25, 2023. Born in Woodbury, NJ he was the son of the late David M. Lewis Jr. and Martha M. Lewis. He was the older brother of Michael H. Lewis, of Woodstown. Dave was a highly accomplished athlete and after graduating from Woodstown High School attended Eastern Baptist College where he played basketball and baseball to include setting the school scoring record for men's basketball at the time. Upon graduation Dave started his 38 year career as an educator in Woodstown which included over 70 combined seasons coaching basketball, football and softball. His dedication and tenacity as a teacher and coach influenced thousands of students in the classroom and in competition. His exemplary accomplishments earned Dave induction into the Eastern University Hall of Honor (2013), Salem County Sports Hall of Fame (2014) and South Jersey Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2015). Dave's highest priorities were his family and his faith. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Woodstown for over 50 years and was steadfast and resolute in his faith. Dave married the love of his life, Kathy Clapp, on April 29, 1967 starting a 56 year marriage and devotion to each other and their family. He was an omnipresent father and grandfather who never (ever) missed a sporting event, special occasion or opportunity to help and spend time with his three children (Brett, Jen and Anne) and eight grandchildren (Morgan, Jess, Kate, Bobby, Ben, Zach, Bryce and Abby). Pop-Pop was a hero and always will be a source of love, respect and admiration to his family. Visitation and viewing will be held at H. T.
