James Ricardo Veney, more commonly known as "Smokey", "Ricky", or "PawPaw", received his reward on September 8, 2023, at Sentara RMH with his loving wife Virginia and family by his side. Smokey was born on July 16, 1955, in Harrisonburg, VA, the son of the late Charles Edward "Chief"Veney and Evelyn Johnson Veney. Smokey graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1974, where he played football, basketball, and ran track. Legend has it, this was also where he received the now infamous nickname "Smokey. "On December 2, 1983, he married his beloved wife, Virginia, who survives. In 2020, Smokey retired from R. R. Donnelly and Sons, with over 35 years of service as a baler operator. Even after retirement, he could not stay away from his friends and co-workers, as he continued to work part time up until recent weeks. He was a regular attendee at Heart of Man Spirit Fire Church of Broadway and had a special place in his heart for the congregation of Brighter Days Bible Church in Mt. Jackson. Outside of work and church, Smokey could usually be found at a ball field of some sort, as he dedicated most of his life to coaching his sons in everything from "peewee" football to AAU basketball, to RCBL baseball. He looked forward each year to sharing his knowledge and passion for "the game" with the youth of our area, most recently serving as an assistant baseball coach at Spotswood High School. He made a positive impact in the lives of many through the years as he loved each one of his athletes as if they were his own child. In addition to coaching, Smokey enjoyed fishing, barbecuing chicken, and watching the traffic go by the house while drinking his coffee. Most Fridays you would find him enjoying the music and fellowship at Backyard Music in Mt. Jackson. More than anything though, he loved his family and loved spending time with them whether it be at family dinners on Sunday or supporting his kids and grandkids in their many interests. He will always be their #1 fan. Smokey will be remembered as a humble man with a gentle smile. He never met a stranger and it didn't matter where he went, someone was bound to know him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Kevin Rush and wife Kim of Broadway, Josh Veney and wife Missy of Timberville, and J. D. Veney of Broadway; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; four brothers, Ronald Veney and wife Vicky of Luray, Tony "Scratchy" Veney of New Market, Leonard Veney and wife JoLynn of Quicksburg, and Larry "Huggy" Veney of New Market; three sisters; Patsy Brown and husband Larmont of Middletown, Diane Whitley of Harrisonburg, and Charlene Good and husband John of Woodstock; an uncle, Bobby Johnson and wife Judy of Luray; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers; Jerry, Charles, Richard, Steve, and Bill Veney, and a sister, Elizabeth Frye. The family will receive friends on Thursday September 14, 2023 from 6-8PM at Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway. Pastors Larry Rinard and Wayne Long will conduct a service at 2:00 PM on Saturday September 16, 2023 at Cornerstone Church in Broadway, VA to be followed by a graveside service at the Veney Family Cemetery in Luray, VA. Darlene Mitchell, 87, of Timberville, died November 14, 2023 at Consulate Health Care of Woodstock. She was born July 18, 1936 in Mathias, WV and was a daughter to the late Loy and Delma Cullers Moyer. She was a homemaker and member of Crab Run Church of the Brethren in Mathias. On October 5, 1991 she married Jesse R. Mitchell, who survives. Darlene was preceded in death by her first husband Cletus Hupp. Also surviving are two daughters; Pam O'Roark, of Bergton, Sheila Hupp, of Bergton, a son; Kent Hupp, of Broadway, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and a brother; Frank Moyer, of Bergton. She was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law; Jim and Ellen Moyer. She will be cremated and there will not be any services. Meade Siever Sr

Meade Rudolph Siever Sr. , 83, of Mt. Jackson died November 11, 2023 at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock. He was born December 16, 1939 near Cootes Store in Broadway to the late Benjamin Franklin and Meba Landis Siever. Meade worked for H&H construction after retiring from Lantz Construction. On December 9, 1983 he married the former Velda Ray Williams who survives. Also surviving are children, Susan Kerns, Sharon Ogden, Deborah Baker, Thomas Siever, Delores See, Cynthia Marthin, Meade Siever Jr, Kenny Wayne Siever; four stepchildren; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Roger D. Siever and a sister, Lina Lindamood. His body was cremated and services will be private.Show more

Bobby Turner

Age - 82

Bobby Warren Turner, 82, of Criders, died October 26, 2023 at his home. He was born September 29, 1941 in Criders and was a son to the late Warren Wesley and Ogretta Ruth Smith Turner. Bobby was a farmer and local artist, often sharing prints of his artwork. He was a member of Damascus Church of the Brethren in Criders. He frequented the Bergton Book Station as a visitor and helper and also helped at the Bergton Food Bank. Some of the things Bobby enjoyed were hunting and being outdoors, woodworking and grafting from the orchard he had on his land. Bobby made a rug loom and enjoyed making throw rugs. He was a member of the Bergton Fair Association. Surviving is a sister; Gloria Gay Ritchie, of Harrisonburg, three nephews; Larry Allen Ritchie, Jr. , of Roanoke, Kurt Regan Ritchie, of Richmond, IN, Bruce William Ritchie, of Shenandoah, three great nephews; Turner Ritchie, Bennett Ritchie, Aaron Kiser, two great nieces; Susan Haymaker, Sharon Aldridge, a great great niece; Cloe Aldridge, and a cousin; Roger Smith. A graveside service will be held Saturday 1 PM at Caplinger Cemetery in Criders. Pastor Larry Aikens will conduct a memorial service Sunday 3 PM at Damascus Church of the Brethren, where a meal will be served following the service. Friends may pay their respects and sign the guestbook on Friday from 12 PM- 7 PM at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway. The casket will be closed. Jeffery Alan Zacharko born November 21, 1969 in Baltimore, MD, went to be with his Lord on October 27, 2023. He is survived by his mother Geraldine Spitzer, sister Sandra Zacharko (Jimmy), brother Eric Zacharko and wife Susan, niece Jordan Ritchie, nephew Vincent Zacharko, Jacob Zacharko and wife Kate, three great nephews; Tristan Zacharko, Cooper Thompson and Jonathan Zacharko. He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Zacharko, Step-father Robert Spitzer and nephew Bradley Ritchie. He worked at Blue Stone Restaurant for many years where they became his second family. Treva Ervalie Dove, 86, of Broadway VA, passed away at a private residence on October 23, 2023 in Timberville. Treva was born June 1, 1937 in Hardy County WV to the late Jason and Lucy Whetzel Dove. Treva was a member of the Valley View Mennonite Church in Criders, VA. She had worked at HD Lee in Broadway and Shenandoah Manufacturing in Harrisonburg. She is survived by sisters; Patricia Yankey of Criders, Geneva Singh of FL, foster sister; Marcella Payne of Harrisonburg and numerous nieces and nephews. Treva was preceded in death by sister's; Dorothy Ritchie, Cleona Dolly, Annabell Dove, one brother; Dick Dove. Rev. Mike Shenk will conduct a graveside service Sunday November 5, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Ritchie Family Cemetery at the top of Branch Mountain. There will not be any services at the funeral home. Helen Louise Gum Wegman, 98, of Linville, died October 16, 2023 at Harrisonburg Health and Rehab. She was born June 2, 1925 in Randolph County, WV and was a daughter to the late Grover and Dona Hammons Gum. She worked as a side seamstress at H. D. Lee Company. She attended Mt. Zion Church of the Brethren. She loved sewing and crocheting. On February 25, 1939 she married Roy Wilson Wegman, Sr. , who preceded her in death on November 2, 2008. Surviving are four sons; Roy Wegman, Jr. , of Broadway, Carrol Wegman, of Dailey, WV, Jackie Wegman, of Broadway, Kenneth Wegman and companion Shelia, of Valley Bend, WV, 13 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, numerous great great grandchildren and a number of siblings. She was preceded in death by a daughter; Gearldine Wegman, two sons; Delmas and Wilson Wegman, and a number of siblings. A funeral service will be held Friday 10 AM at the Grandle Funeral Home Chapel in Broadway. Burial will be private. Edward Michael Watson, 78, of Broadway, VA passed away October 16, 2023 at Life Care Center of New Market. He was born March 28, 1945 in Ellicott City, MD to the late Ernest and Erma Gainer Delawder. Edward was a welder at Walker Manufacturing. On December 19, 1964 he married the former Joyce Hottinger, who survives. Also surviving is one daughter, Sandy Morris and husband Justin of Broadway, Jeffrey Watson and wife Nikki of Bridgewater, Mike Watson and wife Ella of Mt. Jackson; grandchildren, Ashley, Tiffany, Amanda, Brian, Bentley; 11 great grandchildren. Four brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Frances Fawley

Frances Fawley, 103, went home to Jesus on October 14, 2023. She was born Frances Louise Fulk on June 19, 1920 in Fulks Run, Virginia to Joseph A. and Hattie Belle Fulk who preceded her in death. Brothers, Owen and Paul Fulk, and sisters, Kathleen Ritchie and Mary Turner, are also deceased. Frances graduated from Broadway High School in 1938. She met and married Stanley Dean Fawley in 1943. They lived in Alexandria, Virginia and she worked for the Core of Engineers at the Pentagon, retiring in 1972. They returned to Fulks Run to live out their days together and in service of the Lord. Having lost Stanley in 2009, Frances is now reunited with her dear husband. Frances will be remembered for her cheerful attitude and warm chuckle by all who knew her. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Shipe and Virginia Ann Hulvey, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Dennis Ervin Ritchie, 78 of Fulks Run VA, passed October 3, 2023 peacefully at his residence. He was born on October 31, 1944, to the late Cletus and Alma Cooper Ritchie. On November 11, 1971, he married the late Linda Kay Ritchie, who passed away July 26, 2023. He retired from Quality Feeds. He was a U. S. veteran. He is survived by grandson; Michael Ritchie, of Fulks Run; great granddaughter, Addysyn Marie Ritchie. Dennis was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
