Marion, VA James Stanley "Jimmy" Overbay, age 64, passed away Monday, September 11, 2023 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN. Jimmy was born in Neuburucke, Germany to the late James S. Overbay and Hazel Poston Overbay, and was preceded in death by his sisters, Judie Goodman and husband Denny Ray Goodman, Barbara Overbay Stamper; grandparents, James Floyd Arthur and Grace Powell Overbay and Floyd Lydia Poston and numerous aunts and uncles. Jimmy was an avid hiker until his health failed. He loved to watch Virginia Tech football and the Atlanta Braves baseball. He also retired from General Dynamics. Survivors include, his wife, Glenna Watkins Overbay; children, Audria Lynn Chandler, Jama Marie Caldwell, Dr. Andrea Nicholle Overbay, Tonya Jo Dancy and Matthew Neese, Joseph Blaine Dancy and Kelly; grandchildren, Cody Bennett, Collin Pennington, Crystal Harris, Caleb Bennett, Macy Osborne, Reid Osborne, Caleb Osborne, Katelyn Dancy, Kylee Dancy, Isaiah Dancy; great grand daughter, Addlyn Bennett; brother, Floyd 'Artie" Overbay; brother in-law, Charles "Buster" Stamper; nephew, James Goodman and wife Mary; great niece, Kim Goodman; great nephew, Jacob Goodman and wife Destiny; best friend, Barry Brooks. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, September 17, 2023 at Bradley's Funeral Home in Marion with Pastor Paul Shallenburg officiating. Interment will follow in West Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial donations can be made to St Jude's Children's Hospital or the American Cancer Society. Grand Rapids, Michigan. Nichole Jatan Smith was born in Santa Barbara California at Cottage Hospital on February 4, 1981 to parents Linda English Smith and Henry Smith. Nichole also had two other siblings Crystal Crockett(oldest) and Jalielah Smith Holmes (sec. oldest) . . . Nichole attended Santa Barbara High and later relocated to Ventura county. Nichole loved her new church (Evangelist Missionary Baptist Church) where she kept a great friendship with her church members. Nichole later fell in love with Reginald Vaughntez Shropshire (father) in 2002 and became pregnant with her first and only child Reginald Jakai Shropshire in May 2004. Nichole was the jack of all trades. Nichole received a license in Cosmetology and down the line became a state-to-state truck driver. Nichole was determined to follow in her fathers footsteps in the transportation industry. Nichole was a great aunt to her niece and nephews and continued to travel around the United States driving trucks doing what she loved for a living. Nichole touched so many lives with her words of encouragement, smile, laughter and her relationship with God. Sadly, Nichole's life journey ended on November 21, 2023 but her spirit lives on forever. Reginald "Kai Kai" Shropshire was Nicholes heartbeat and reason to live life to the fullest even in hard times. Rural Retreat, Va. Charlie "Harlow" Gates age 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 24, 2023 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing Home in Rural Retreat, Va. Harlow grew up in the "Black Hill" area of Smyth County. He graduated from Rich Valley H. S. and later attended Danville Com. College. He retired in, 1997, from Danville’s Corning, Inc. plant after 30 thirty-plus years of service. He moved from Danville to Rural Retreat in 2000 to be near our families. He was a loving and caring husband to Shirley W. Gates for 63 yrs. He volunteered with the Danville Rescue Squad for 23 yrs. And with the Rural Retreat squad for 5 yrs. In both squads, his peers honored him with a "CREWMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD. " He was faithful to his church, East End Baptist, and had many good friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Georgia Gates; brothers, Stanley and Harvey Gates; brother-in-law, Roy Harris. Harlow is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley W. Gates of Rural Retreat Va. ; sister, Goldie Gates Harris of Ceres, Va. ; brothers, Cecil Gates and wife, Elaine of Littlestown, Pa. , Bill Gates and wife, Anita of Hanover Pa. , brother-in-law, Bill Wyrick of Bristol Tn. ; sisters-in-law, Jackie Gates of Rural Retreat, Va. , Brenda Wyrick of Bristol, Tn. ; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Brian Simons plus many more. Atkins, Va. / Kingsport, Tenn. Richard Adam "Wormie" Hamm age 25, passed away Friday, November 10, 2023. Wormie was a happy-go-lucky guy who made friends easily wherever he was. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them – especially when he could be outdoors. When Wormie wasn’t with friends or family, he enjoyed working at Ingles in Marion. Wormie will be missed by all who knew and loved his kind and gentle way. He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Della Grubb; and great-great-aunt, Zoreda Moore. Wormie is survived by his mother, Heather Herron (Shane) of Kingsport, Tenn. ; sisters, Jasmine Hamm and Sabella Herron both of Kingsport, Tenn. ; brothers, Tyler Hamm of Kingsport, Tenn. and Cameron Herron of Gate City, Va. ; grandparents, "Grammie" Candy Wilson and "Papaw" Cecil Grubb, Jr. ; aunt, Mindy Grubb; uncles Charlie Grubb and Nicholas Grubb; nieces and nephews, Aqua, Arrow and Tucker Hamm, Atlas and Remington Herron. MARION, VAIn one of the stars, I shall be living. In one of them, I shall be laughing. Terry "Turkey" Wayne Hubbard, 66, of Marion, VA, passed away peacefully at home after a long and courageous battle against many health issues. On November 1, 2023, early that morning, the clouds lifted and he was ushered to Heaven. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a practical joker with a generous heart of gold, never hesitating to help people out. Because he was a big kid at heart, his grandchildren adored him. Turkey was strong willed and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was generous, loyal, and brave. He was one of a kind and there will never be another one like him. Turkey was born in Grundy in 1957 to the late Robert and Margie Hubbard. In addition, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Harley, William, Charles, Freddy, Joel, and one infant sister, Nancy Fern. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Thelma Blankenship Hubbard; sons, Terry (Andrea), Dwayne (Shannon); grandchildren, Makinsey (Josh) Haynes, Austin, Adanna, Aubrey, Elijah, and Ava; great-grandchildren, Bentley and Atlas. Four Brothers; Daniel (Janet), Pete (Denise), William (Sue), Wesley (Robin) Two Sisters; Marjorie Wood, Elizabeth (Freddy) Keen; and a whole host of nieces, nephews, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Jessie and Myrtle Ferguson Church; husband Max Barker; son Douglas Barker; brothers Edward Church & wife Eleanor, and Robert Church & wife Dorothy; and sisters Judy Belton & husband Art, and Christine Church. Joyce loved working with her plants and flowers. She also enjoyed watching birds, especially Cardinals. She is survived by her three children Teresa Rose & husband David of Roanoke, Eugene Barker of Marion, and Angela Prater & husband Scott of Chilhowie; grandchildren Michele Barker, Alisha Hutchinson, Jessica Rose, Jonathan Rose, Jordan Prater, and Madison Prater; great grandchildren Zoey Hess, Blake Hess, Hunter Hutchinson, Chandler Hutchinson, and a very special great grandson Byron Rose; brothers John Henry Church & wife Esperanza, and Buddy Church & wife Kathy; sister Dorothy Boyette; several nieces and nephews to include special nieces and caregivers Belinda Church, Sharon Church, and Brittany Holstein; and Devin Dowell who she thought of as her own grandson.
