"Dr. James H. Huber, 84 of Bloomsburg, passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He was born on August 3, 1939, in Nanticoke, the son of the late Curvan and Louise (Mensch) Huber. James graduated from the Bloomsburg High School in 1957. He earned a B. S. in English and Social Studies from Bloomsburg State College in 1962. He went on to West Virginia University but transferred to University of Delaware earning his M. A. in Sociology \u0026amp; Urban Planning in 1965. In 1976, James completed his Ph. D. in Sociology (Urban Occupations \u0026amp; Professions) from Pennsylvania State University. James began his teaching career at Pennsylvania State University, followed by Akron University. He moved back to the Bloomsburg area with his wife in 1971, where he was a professor of Sociology at Bloomsburg University for 34 years. While enjoying farm life with his family and Morgan horses in Mount Pleasant Township, he served on the Central Columbia School Board. Later he served on the Bloomsburg School Board when he and his family moved within the town limits. He served two terms as a Bloomsburg Town Councilman, was re-elected in 2020, but finally resigned in September, 2023 for medical reasons. He had a deep love for Bloomsburg and was writing a book about the town. James was a founding member of the Global Awareness Society International, an organization which holds conferences around the world, providing him the opportunity to travel to places like Poland, Korea, Budapest, Germany and Morocco. An avid traveler, he also enjoyed trips to the Jersey Shore, skiing around the US, and taking river cruises in Europe with his wife. He was extremely talented with a chain saw and loved to carve Santa Clauses and other figures from large tree trunks. He created about 100 sculptures. He is survived by his wife, Deirdre, with whom he celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in July; his son, Curvin and his wife, Catriona, of Sudbury, MA; his daughter, Candace Henne, of Redwood City, CA; and a brother, Sheldon Huber, of Neptune, NJ. A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc. , 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg. A Celebration of Life will begin on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc. with Dr. James Pomfret, BU Professor Emeritus, officiating.
