"Frederick "Troy" Hunziker, age 67, a resident of Chanute, Kansas passed away on December 6, 2023, at his home after a brief illness from leukemia. He was born on March 23, 1956 in Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of Fred and Carolyn Hunziker. In 1958, the family moved to Chanute, Kansas, where Troy spent the majority of his life. He graduated from Chanute High School in 1974 and attended college at Neosho County Community College. Troy and Vicki Jackson were married April 8, 1978. Although the marriage later dissolved, they remained dear to one another, and friends, until the end. He worked with his father at "Fred's Treads", and later assumed ownership. For over forty years, he served the community in this capacity and was affectionately known as "Tireman," Troy was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing, game hunting, rock collecting, gardening, morel hunting, and golfing. He didn't miss opening day of dove season for over 50 years. These were special activities that he enjoyed with his closest buddies and "bonus" son, Tray. Troy was an excellent home chef. Over the years, he graciously shared thousands of pints of fine, homemade salsa after carefully harvesting his tomatoes and perfecting his recipe. He maintained a record of his morel finds each year, often totaling over 1,000, and loved to add them to numerous dishes. More than anything, Troy was a good friend, loving father figure, and special family member. Troy is survived by his mother, Carolyn Swiler; step-father, David Swiler; step-brothers Ed (Chris) and Morgan Swiler; niece, Carrie Barnett and nephew, Harrison (Annie) Williamson; bonus children, Tray (Holly) Olson and Tannah (Ryan) Jones; former wife and forever friend, Vicki Hunziker; and beloved dog and close companion, "L'il Miss. " He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Hunziker and sister, Cheryl Williamson. Visitation will be on Monday, December 11, 2023 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Countryside Funeral Home. Service will be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at 10:00 am with burial to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Fort Scott. Memorials have been suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or MD Anderson Cancer Center and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home. "Robert Emil "Bob" Huerter, 101, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023 in Chanute, Kansas. He was the oldest of five boys born to Paul Emil and Valeria Johnstone Huerter on August 22, 1922, in Nemaha County near Goff, Kansas. He graduated from Goff High School in 1940. In September of 1942, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy and was called to service in February 1943. He was commissioned in 1944 and remained in the Naval Reserve until 1961, receiving an honorable discharge. Bob was a Naval Aviator stationed in Northern Africa, flying bomber patrols. While in the service, Robert married Verda Whitcraft in Florida in 1944, she preceded him in death. After his discharge from active duty in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant, he returned to Goff, Kansas. On October 28, 1947, he married Eileen Roggenkamp. To this union was born five children, Robert Jr, Deborah, Bruce, Donald, and Linda. She preceded him in death on July 15, 1984. He then married Anna Hoefler Ratliff on April 25, 1987; she preceded him in death on December 15, 2018. Robert retired from the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1982 after 33 years of service at the rank of Lieutenant. After retirement he worked at Chanute TV for several years and for Penwell-Gabel, now known as Countryside Funeral Home for many years. Bob was a very devout Catholic at St. Patrick's in Chanute. He served on the parish council, school board, and other committees. He volunteered many hours at the St. Patrick's Bargain Store and Harvest House. Bob was a member of the Chanute American Legion Post 170 for over 30 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1046 in Chanute for 76 years. He was a Fourth Degree Knight serving as District Deputy and Grand Knight. He enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, and in later years traveling. He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs, Royals, and K-State fan. Bob is survived by his children: Robert Jr. and his wife Susan of Larned, KS, Debbie Huerter of Topeka, KS, Bruce and Jane of Chanute, KS, Don and Debra of Chanute, KS, and Linda Burger of Parsons, KS, Grandchildren: Stephanie and Eric Byers of Chanute, Joshua and Courtney Huerter of Chanute, Micaela Huerter of Kansas City, MO, Becca Huerter of Kansas City, MO, and Leighana Huerter and Steven Skells of Madison, WI, great-grandchildren: Bristol Byers, Bo Byers, Jaxon Huerter, and Wyatt Huerter, step-children: Kathy Wicker (Glenn) of Chanute, KS, Jackie Van Gotten of Chanute, KS, Gary Ratliff (Julie) of Chanute, KS, Mickey Ratliff (Shari) of Chanute, KS, Denice Squire and husband Jean of Westfield, IN, and Michelle Ratliff of Moore, OK, nineteen step-grandchildren, forty-five step great-grandchildren, one step great-great-grandchild, and one brother Daniel Huerter of Bellevue, NE, sister-in-law Joan O'Shea (Robert), and many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Valeria, his three wives, step son in law Gary Van Gotten, son in law Brian Burger, brothers James Huerter and wife Jerrie, William (Bill) and JoAnn Huerter, Alfred (Smitty) and Iris Huerter, and sister-in-law Gloria Huerter. A rosary and visitation will be held on Sunday, December 10, 2023 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Chanute. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, December 11, 2023 at 10:30 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church with burial to immediately follow at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. "Danny Ray Romine, 68, of Chanute passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 30, 2023. Danny was born on April 6, 1955, in Chanute, the youngest child of Robert Warren and Eleanor Marie (Sattler) Romine. Danny grew up in Chanute and was a member of the Chanute High School graduating class in 1973. After high school, Danny moved to Enumclaw, Washington, where he would work in the field for Weyerhauser Logging. After a while in Washington, Danny moved back to Chanute to work for MidAmerica Refinery hauling crude oil and to start a family. In 1977, Danny married Tanya Seibel, out of this union came two children, Taryn and Thane. Danny and Tanya would later divorce. Danny was an outdoorsman at heart, whether it was fishing, working in the oil field, or as a brick mason doing building restoration; Danny loved to be outside. Danny also loved spending time with his pets, woodworking, watching the History Channel, and making the holidays special for his family. Danny will always be remembered as a friend to everyone. Danny is survived by his children Taryn Sigler (Jeremy) of Chanute and Thane Romine (Ashley) of Chanute, siblings Sharon Gard of Wichita, Rosemary Rosemary Roberts of Prescott, AZ, and Larry Romine of Green Acres, FL, and three grandchildren Dillyn Sigler, Maci Romine, and Jack Romine. Danny was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Eleanor. Rita Ann (Serrato) DeLaTorre, 73, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023. Rita was born on October 22, 1950, in Chanute, Kansas to Alfred and Ruth (Abaloz) Serrato. Rita attended Chanute Public Schools during her educational years. Following her schooling, she was united in marriage to Lucio DeLaTorre in Chanute, Kansas, they later divorced. Rita worked many years as an Assembler for Kustom Signals in Chanute. She was a loving and caring individual who loved her family. Rita had a passion for dancing and enjoyed attending annual Fiesta events. However, her greatest joy came from creating cherished memories with her loved ones. Rita is survived by, her son, Mark DeLaTorre of Blue Springs, MO, and daughters, Brenda DeLaTorre (Keith Bockover) of Chanute, KS, and Shannon (Chris) Martin of Gardner, KS. She is also survived by her brother, Johnny Serrato of Independence, MO, and her two grandsons, Derek DeLaTorre and Noah Martin. Rita was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Gloria Serrato and Connie DeLaGarza, and brothers Richard Serrato and Billy Joe Gutierrez.
