James "Jim" Exline Jr. , 58, of Lisbon, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Jim was born October 5, 1964 in Youngstown, Ohio, a son to James Exline Sr. and Lauretta (James) Sok. He was a 1982 graduate of Girard High School. Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Cold War and was honorably discharged in 1989. Jim had worked for R+L Carriers for 13 years. He was a member of Open Door Church in McDonald, Ohio and the V. F. W Post 4111 in Lisbon. Jim enjoyed golfing, fishing and tending to his garden along with traveling and visiting family. He will be greatly missed by his mother and step father, Thomas and Lauretta Sok; children, James (Jennifer) Exline III, Jennifer Lynn Exline, Lisa (Jonathan) Sparks, and Caitlyn (Nick) Narkum; brothers Raymond,Ron and Billy Exline. Sister Cindy Exline, Tom (Jean) Sok, Amanda (David) Flanigan, Kathy (Steve) Malone; his beloved aunt and uncle , Georgeann and Butch Gatrell; along with 12 grandchildren. Along with his father he is preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Candina Exline who passed away September 3, 2014.

Anna Louise (Lovitz) Arquilla, 85, of Girard, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 3, 2023 in the comfort of her home. Anna was born February 21, 1938 in Youngstown, Ohio, a daughter to Charles andThelma (Thomas) Lovitz. Anna received her beautician license and would cut and style hair for many years working at home. Anna started working at Strouss in the cosmetic department and would retire from JCPenney. She was a member of Liberty Assembly of God Church in Liberty. Anna was a phenomenal cook and baker. She was always in the kitchen making something for her family and friends to enjoy. Her specialty was her pie crust and her beef vegetable soup. She loved to go shopping mainly at Kohl's. Anna appreciated fancy things and being pampered. Anna loved all kinds of flowers and took enjoyment in tending to her flower garden. The holidays were special to Anna, having her family at her house especially Christmas Eve. She loved when the whole family got together. Her family was the joy of her life, especially her grandchildren. She cherished every moment with them. Anna leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 67 years, Albert Arquilla, who she married June 9,1956; her children, Cynthia (Roy) Barnett of Columbiana, Robert (Melissa) Arquilla of Liberty Twp. , Charles Arquilla of Austintown, Beth (Samuel) Griner of Girard and Melissa Orr of Cortland; along with 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Along with her parents Anna is preceded in death by her sister, Hazel Cowles and brothers, William, Charles and George Lovitz. Donald Rex, 78, of Girard. Son of Margaret (Kuzman) Rex and Donald G. Rex. Known by family and friends as Dad, Grandpa and Buster. He was a 1963 graduate of Girard High School and 1969 graduate of YSU. He received his Masters in 1977 from Westminister College. He went on to become a teacher in Girard and later an elementary principal at Tod Wood Middle School, Summit and Washington schools. He served as the Director of Special Education at Girard High School and ran their after school program before retiring in 2001. Post-retirment he helped supervise student teachers at Kent State. His love for the city of Girard, it's citizens and students, was strong. He was elected as an at-large city councilman where he followed his heart and did what he believed was right for the city. He was also instrumental in creating the canoe launch site in Girard, something he was very proud of. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Kelli Rex. He leaves behind his loving wife of 46 years (Patricia), his son Michael (Alyssa), daughter Katie Martino (Paul), grandchildren Ethan, Lyla, and Emmie, sisters Mary Leah Mendenhall, Maureen Zeller, Margaret Hill, and Kathryn Rex, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends Don's memory will live on in the hearts of many, but mostly in the hearts his wife, children and grandchildren. Charles D. "Doug" Verner, 77, passed away peacefully at home Monday, November 6, 2023 with his loving wife by his side. He was born October 1, 1946 in Youngstown, Ohio the son of Virginia and Clayton Verner. Doug began his lifelong career in the railroad industry as a Locomotive Firemen in October of 1964 with Erie Lackawanna Railway eventually working his way up to a Locomotive/Passenger Engineer and finally Road Foreman with Conrail. He later went on to work with the Ohio Central Railroad System as Superintendent of Operations eventually retiring from Cuyahoga Scenic Railroad. Doug's love for music, particularly 50's 60's , led him to start his own Disc Jockey Service where he spun records locally for numerous night clubs for a number of years. He had formed a loyal following while also forming many friendships along the way. On May 15, 1987, he married his best friend, the former Charlene "Char" Margala. Inseparable , they enjoyed 36 years of life together. Sharing their love and passion cooking together, family and friends would often gather at their home on Sunday's to enjoy whatever new recipe they decided to delve into. In addition to his love of music, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, but most of all socializing with his friends. Doug will be sadly missed, but never forgotten for his smile, laugh and kind heart. He will remain in the hearts of his wife Char, son Scott (Denise), granddaughter Lisa, great grandson Ayden, sisters Lorie Carpenter, Lynda (Brad) Shaffer, brother Joe (Jeanette), mother-in-law Bernie Margala, brother an sister-in-laws and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dianne Smith, brother-in-law Raymond Smith and father-in-law Charles Margala. Jessica Lea Thompson, age 41, went to heaven on Friday, September 22, 2023 at her home in Girard, Ohio. She was formerly of Wytheville. She was preceded in death by her father, Curtis MacArthur Thompson (Mack) and grandparents William and Katherine Thompson, her great-grandmother, Hazel Thompson, all of Wytheville. She loved and cherished her three daughters more than anything else in the world. She was a loyal friend, always there in the times of need. You didn't have to ask her for help, she would show up and begin doing whatever needed to be done. She was especially fond of her Cocker Spaniel, Kingston, whom she took everywhere including letting him ride in her lap on car rides. She was a superb cakemaker and decorator. She was best known for her themed cakes. She is survived by her three daughters, Alyssa Zakhi Mallette, Mea Marie Mallette and Annica Leigh Mallette, all of Wytheville, her sister, Tiffany Ann Clarkson of Ohio; her nieces, Charleigh Clarkson and Kinzleigh Clarkson of Ohio; nephew, Gavin Riggs of Ohio; aunt and uncle, Sheila Dalton and Steven Brillante of Wytheville. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2023 at 1:00 P. M. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until service time. Donald William "Bill" Byo, 91, of Bernalillo, NM passed away Monday October 2, 2023 Bill was born June 22, 1932 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of the late Gustav Andrew and Dorothy May (Johnston) Byo One who thrived in music, Bill's music education began in the band program at Youngstown South High School and in Baptist church orchestras and continued during a bachelor's degree at Youngstown College (class of 1954) and in the U S Army Bands (1954-1956) His passion for music and teaching would lead to band director positions in the Lordstown Schools and Niles High School and a master's degree from Kent State University, where in 2000 he was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Glauser School of Music In 1963, he was named interim director of bands and professor of bassoon at Youngstown College (In 1967, it would become Youngstown State University ) Twenty-nine years at YSU included leadership as Assistant Dean, Dean, and finally Director of the Dana School of Music In retirement, he continued to teach part time at YSU, Westminster College, and Grove City College During all of these years, he combined substantial teaching and administrative responsibilities with substantial activity as a respected performing musician, who joined with talented and dedicated other musicians to cultivate the classical music culture of the Mahoning Valley and Western Pennsylvania Bill was a long-time member of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, the W D Packard Band, the Greenville (PA) Symphony Orchestra, and the Kenley Players Orchestra He was a founding member of the Dana Woodwind Quintet In 2004 he was the recipient of the Heritage Award for exceptional service to Youngstown State University In 2021 he retired from the Packard Band as Conductor Emeritus and Conductor Laureate Bill is survived by his wife June Catherine (Wajda) Byo, whom he married December 27, 1954 He also leaves his children and their (spouses), James (Jane) Byo, Susan (Howard) Passell, and Kathy (Richard) Hentosh; grandchildren Ben (Adrienne) Byo, Caitlin (Justin) Thuet, Alex (Mary) Byo, and Julia Passell, and 5 great grandchildren Bill is preceded in death by his brother Charles Byo Calling hours will be held Friday October 13th from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM at Blackstone Funeral Home (672 Churchill Rd Girard, Ohio) with a funeral service on Saturday October 14th at 11:00 AM at Church Hill United Methodist Church (189 Churchill Hubbard Rd Youngstown, Ohio) Bill will be laid to rest at Tod Homestead Cemetery The family requests memorial gifts be made to the general scholarship fund of the Dana School of Music, Youngstown State University Foundation (ysufoundation org) Click "Give Now" and follow the promptsShow more

Martin J. Gallagher Sr. , 86, of Girard, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 23, 2023 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family. Martin was born August 31, 1937 in Warren, Ohio, a son to the late Thomas and Lillian (Jones) Gallagher. He proudly served his country with honorable discharge in the U. S. Navy Amphibious Forces from 1955 to 1958 and the U. S. Navy Ready Reserve from 1958-1963. Martin started working at Brainard Rivert Company in 1959, working his way up to Plant Manager from 1976 until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of St. Rose Church in Girard. In his spare time, Martin enjoyed fishing, tending to his garden, cutting grass and going to the casinos. In the mornings he enjoyed his pipe and coffee. His grandchildren meant the world to him and he enjoyed every moment with them. Martin leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 63 years, Barbara (Comichisto) Gallagher, who he married September 26, 1959; his children, Wendy (Ray) Ragozine of Girard, Michael (Kristen) Gallagher of Girard and Martin J. (Shana) Gallagher Jr. of Pickerington, OH; brother, James Gallagher; and grandchildren, Kali, Caitlyn and Jacob. Along with his parents Martin is preceded in death by his sister, Julia Nutter and brother, Thomas Gallagher. A funeral service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, September 27th, 6:00 PM at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard, where the family will receive relatives and friends from 4:00 PM until the time of service.
