"James Elmer Ewoldt, age 66, of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2023. A memorial service will be 11:00 a. m. , Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Morningside Lutheran Church, with Pastor Noah Ruppert officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 p. m. , Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel. James Elmer Ewoldt was born November 2, 1956, in Iowa City, IA to Elmer and Margaret (Lindhorst) Ewoldt. He married Kathy Hofland on May 7, 1994, in Elk Point, SD. Jim graduated from Algona High School in 1974. He worked for McHan Construction for 32 years as a bricklayer until the business closed. He also worked as a custodian for Morningside Lutheran Church and returned to Morningside University at the same time and recently returned to Morningside University. He was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church since 2010. Jim enjoyed golfing, fishing, grilling, and visits to Rose Ridge Resort in Vergas, MN. Jim is survived by his wife Kathy of Sioux City; daughters Kayla (Darwin) Zuniga, Emily Ewoldt, and Elizabeth Ewoldt all of Sioux City; 4 grandchildren: Bentley, Audrey, Emmett, and Jackson; sisters Myrna (Jerry) Meyer and Janan (Mike) Gillis; and brother Craig Ewoldt; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Loveda Barber and Lorna Christensen; brothers Henry "Hank" Ewoldt, Robert "Bob" Ewoldt, Lynn Ewoldt; infant brothers Jerome and Rance Ewoldt; in-laws Merlin \u0026amp; Delores Hofland; and brother-in-law Gary Hofland. Brenda Lee Brown, 75, of Sioux City passed away on November 29, 2023 at a local nursing home after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers. Services will be on Tuesday, December 5th at 10:30 a. m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will take place Monday, December 4th from 5-7 p. m. Online condolences may be sent to www. meyerbroschapels. com. Brenda was born on June 5, 1948 in Wellston, Ohio to Martha and Bud Bowen. She graduated from Wellston High School and later moved to Sioux City where she attended the Iowa School of Beauty. On March 16, 1968, Brenda married Richard Brown at the Sioux City Air Base. Soon after, they welcomed three children: Samantha, Pamela and Scott Brown. Brenda was a homemaker and ran a daycare business out of her home for many years. After her children were all in school, she began working outside the home. She had various jobs; some of her favorites were Sunshine Food Markets, St. Luke’s Hospital, and Walmart. She was a member of the Sioux City Lions Club, Moose Lodge, and was a Girl Scout leader for many years. Brenda enjoyed crafting, bowling, and volunteering. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. Those left to cherish her memory include; daughters Samantha Brown (Patrick) of Sioux City, Pamela Harvard (Dennis) of Elk Point, SD; a son Scott Brown (Anne) of Akron; grandchildren: Sara Pirtle, Karina Hinrickson, Jessica Brown, Jake Brown, Jonathon Choquette, Sophia Choquette and Jackson Choquette; great grandchildren: Emma, Josee and Shelbie; her brother Bob Bowen (Patti) of Oklahoma, and several nieces and nephews. Brenda was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her parents, Bud Bowen and Martha and Melvin Neumann. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Siouxland. The family would also like to thank the wonderful and hardworking caregivers at Lawton Senior Living, Pioneer Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and Care Initiatives Hospice for loving Brenda like their very own.Show more

Dora Alicia Cohen, 56, of Sioux City passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a. m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at St. Boniface Catholic Church. She was born and raised in El Salvador, Concepion de Ataco, Departamento de Ahuachapan, and moved to the United States in 1998 where she lived the rest of her life in Sioux City. Dora studied at Complejo Educativo "Antonio J. Alfaro" and graduated Instituto Nacional Alejandro de Humbolt in 1986 with a degree with nursing. She made her career working as a nurse, also working for a time at BPI and Interbake Foods. On February 28, 2006 Dora married Kurt D. Cohen in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Kurt preceded Dora in death on May 10, 2020. Dora was a devout Catholic and practiced her faith by spending time reading her bible, as well as in her actions towards others and helping those in need. In her free time, she loved to take care of her plants and flowers, spend time with her family granddaughter, Jazmin, and loved to go on walks at Riverside Park and Trinity Heights. She also loved to dance and listen to music, both Spanish and English. She is survived by her mother, Maria Julia Cabrera; son, Jose Rivera and his wife Blanca Diaz; son, Luis Hernandez; son, Kevin Garcia; sister, Deysi Arevalo; granddaughter, Jazmin Rivera; and grandson, Marcos Rivera. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kurt. D Cohen; and her father, Miguel A. Zometa. Pallbearers for Dora’s services will be Luis Hernandez, Jose Rivera, Kevin Garcia, and Marcos Rivera.Show more

Pauline Ruth Sneller, 89 of Sioux City, Iowa, daughter of Earl and Ethel (Grotenhuis) Atkins, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2023 peacefully in her sleep. A Memorial Service will be at 1:00 p. m. Friday, December 15, 2023 at the Grace United Methodist Church with Reverend John Christianson officiating. A Reception will be held in the fellowship hall following services. Burial will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. At the age of 9, she and her family moved to Pella, Iowa where she attended Pella High. Pauline worked as the Secretary for the Pella City Clerk and was selected to ride on the City Office float for the annual Tulip Festival. During a Tulip Festival dance, she met the love of her life, Vernon Sneller. Both dressed in traditional Dutch attire and danced in wooden shoes. They married four years later August 10, 1957, in Pella. Pauline and Vern were together from then on and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on August 10, 2023. After marriage, they lived in Pella, Woodward, Le Mars and Sioux City Iowa. Pauline and Vern raised 5 children: LeeAnn, Tim, Ron, Lisa and Michael. They were both active in their church. Pauline enjoyed participating in the choir, Hand Bell Choir and Women’s Bible Study at Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa. Pauline and Vern also enjoyed square dancing and were committee members for their group named Skirts and Flirts. For a short time, they also ran a small business aptly named VP Enterprise. A devoted mother and loving spouse, Pauline enjoyed beading, playing the piano and music of any form. One of Pauline’s proudest achievements was heading up the Grace United Methodist Church Outreach Commission Refugee Program helping relocate five families from Vietnam and Cambodia. In 1989, Pauline was awarded the Individual Governor’s Volunteer Award for providing outstanding volunteer service presented by Governor Terry Branstad at the Governor’s Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony. Pauline is survived by her children: daughter Lee Ann, sons Tim (Debbie), Ron (Rhonda), and Michael (Lori) of Sioux City, Iowa and daughter Lisa (Mike) Engeldinger, of Bellevue, Washington; 12 Grandchildren, Brysen Sneller, Sarah (Dagan) Davenport, Tim (Heather) Sneller, Cole (Marsha) Sneller, Nate (Missy) Sneller, Ronnie Sneller, Raven Sneller Jessica Engeldinger, Ben Engeldinger, Brandon (Jazmine) Sneller, Karalynn Sponder, Kendra Ahrnkiel; and 5 Great-Grandchildren. Also Surviving are brother Dr. Roger Atkins of San Francisco, California; brother and sister-in-law Lynn (Denise) Sneller, of Orange City, Iowa; sister-in-law Peggy Sneller of Grayslake Illinois; sister-in-law Rhoda Sneller of West Des Moines, Iowa. Norma Agnes McCarthy, 85, of Sioux City, IA passed away on November 25, 2023 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p. m. Friday, (December 1, 2023) at Meyer Brothers Funeral Homes, 3220 Stone Park Blvd, Sioux City. A Mass will be held at 10:00 a. m. Saturday, (December 2, 2023) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5010 Military Road, Sioux City. Burial will follow mass in McCook Cemetery, McCook, SD. Formerly from Le Mars, Norma was born on February 24, 1938 to parents Frank and Seraphine (Guntren) Rolfes of rural Le Mars, Iowa. She graduated from St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City. She married Paul McCarthy on June 12, 1965. Norma worked as a registered nurse prior to marriage and paused her career to care for her 6 children. After her children were older, she worked as a home health nurse and then enjoyed a long career as a Charge Nurse at Holy Spirit Retirement Home. She loved her family and volunteered with numerous church, school and community groups. She loved to travel and her family have wonderful memories from numerous locations including Adventureland, St. Louis, Chicago. Norma loved animals, sitting on her deck, and reading. She enjoyed unique, fun gifts for friends and family and was an avid letter writing - sharing the interesting things she learned. Norma is survived by her loving family: Brian, Omaha, NE; Patrick, Yankton, SD; Kelly (Dana), Minnetonka, MN; Kevin, Bloomington, MN; Marcia Bolton (Travis), Liberty, MO; Kerry McNamara (Bob), Sioux City, IA; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Sr Gertrude M. Rolfes, Brandon, SD and a brother, Jim Rolfes ( Lu), LeMars, IA. Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Paul McCarthy; parents; sisters Doris Rolfes and Dorothy Hurley, and a brother Francis Rolfes.Show more
