Rudolpho Adan Chavez, 80 of Cuervo, NM, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023 in Logan, NM. Rudy was born on November 8, 1942 in Cuervo, NM to Alfonso and Lucia Chavez. Rudy was raised in Cuervo where he attended school as well as in Santa Rosa, where he graduated from high school. Rudy played football for the Lions and was always a fan of the Lions. On May 3, 1965, Rudy married Judy Barela, and together they made their home in Cuervo, NM. Rudy worked for Santa Rosa Lake State Park in trucking and construction, and later was a mail carrier for the U. S. Postal Service, until his retirement in 2021. Rudy was a life-long parishioner at Santo Niño Mission Church in Cuervo. Rudy is preceded in death by his wife: Judy, his parents and his brothers: Gene Chavez, Joe Chavez and Cecilio Chavez, Sr. —all of Cuervo. Rudy is survived by his siblings: Gabriel, Mary Ann, Rita and Frank—all Bernalillo, NM and Daniel of New Kirk, NM as well as numerous nephews, nieces, family and friends. Recitation of The Most Holy Rosary, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, November 3, 2023, beginning at 9AM, at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa, with Father Moses Nwonkwo officiating the services. James Allen Dunn, 80 a lifelong resident of Fort Sumner, NM peacefully passed away on October 30, 2023 at his daughter's home surrounded by his family. James was born July 28, 1943 in Fort Sumner to the home of James Allen and Faviola (Gauna) Dunn. He grew up in Fort Sumner where he attended school. James married Mary Esther Anaya on June 2, 1965 in Fort Sumner. James worked for 24 years as the Maintenance Technician at the DeBaca General Hospital, and Pecos Valley Care Center. He also spent 7 years working as a ranch hand for Eduardo Trujillo in Guadalupe, NM. James served in the United States Army and spent 30 months in Germany. He was honorably discharged on December 31, 1967. James was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council #8331 of Fort Sumner, and a charter member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus at Santa Rosa. He was also a member of the Fort Sumner Jaycees and St. Anthony Catholic Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Esther Dunn in 2021, one son James Allen Dunn Jr on September 09, 2023, a granddaughter Mary Yvonne Dunn, a great grandson Corbin Aragon, three sisters Dolores Ortega, Jean Chavez, and Lucy Roybal, and two brothers Edward Sena and Jessie Sena. A loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle James will be missed by his family. Survivors include five children, three daughters Deborah Maupin (Will) of House, NM, Sarah Aragon of Fort Sumner, and Corinne Mares Ulibarri of Rio Rancho, two sons, B. J. (Elia) Dunn of Fort Sumner, and Randy Dunn of Albuquerque, two granddaughters he raised Jessica Harris (Ryan) of Clovis and Lenore Christensen (Elton) of Hawaii. Three sisters Ruby (George) Gonzales of Fort Sumner, Angie Mares of Roswell, and Reba (Rudy) Casaus all of Albuquerque, two brother-in-laws Rafael Roybal of Clovis and Paul Chavez of Belen. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and many dear friends. Visitation hours for family and friends will be held Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023 from 1pm to 5pm at Chavez Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 11:00 a. m. at the Church on the Hill in Fort Sumner, NM with Pastor Richard Terrell officiating. Johnny Marvin Martinez Jr, age 88, a life-long resident and multi-generational entrepreneur, passed away peacefully with his children at his side on September 29, 2023. Johnny was born July 15,1935 in Albuquerque, NM, to Juan H. Martinez and Dora G. Martinez. Johnny attended Santa Rosa Schools, graduating in 1954. At an early age Johnny became interested in cooking and made it a career that spanned over 70 years in his hometown of Santa Rosa. Johnny was an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, gardening, trapping, camping and hunting arrowheads. He was a member of the NRA and a Federal Firearms Dealer. Being very civic minded, Johnny worked tirelessly to make Santa Rosa a thriving, successful city as City Councilman, a member of the Public Works Board and various other organizations within his beloved Santa Rosa. He leaves a legacy that will never be duplicated or surpassed. Johnny instilled a strong work ethic in not only his family, but in anyone that had the opportunity to work in one of the many establishments he owned and operated in Santa Rosa. Johnny's claim to fame is the notable Comet II Restaurant, where he worked side by side with his beloved wife Alice until her passing in 2006. He then continued working every day up until a few days before his own passing. The Comet II has been featured in many magazines, newspapers and on TV. The legacy will continue as an honor to his memory. One of Dad's favorite memories was being known as the Vitamin Kid, which was depicted in the memoirs of Rudolfo Anaya's "Bless me Ultima". Dad's most recent activities included watching western movies and reading books, often completing the book in one day. Johnny is preceded in death by his parents: Juan and Dora (Garcia) Martinez, his devoted wife: Alice (Gerhardt) Martinez, daughter: LuAnna Martinez Sena, son: Vincent Roque Martinez, sisters: Rita Olivas and Celina Sierra and his former wife and mother of his children: Patricia (Halpin) Martinez. Survivors include Johnny’s children: Steve (Chris), LeSharon (Ricky) Redelman, Casey (Carolyn), Juanita (Sean) Wootton and a niece who was more like a daughter: Sunshine Zamora, and brothers-in-law: Johnny Olivas and Ralph Sierra. Also surviving Johnny are his grandchildren: Rhonda (Ryan) Hillis, Mark Redelman, Ashley (Tim) Martinez, Taña Martinez, Riley (Clint) Elkins, John (Gabby) Martinez, Nick (Laynie) Martinez, Brooklyn, Skye and Marley Wootton, Robert and Adrianna Zamora and great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Gavin, Adalyn, Zane, Katalea, JianCarlo, Tenley, Kateri, Nathaniel, Alana, Jerome, Whitley, and one on the way. Also surviving Johnny are many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. Johnny has been described and will always be remembered as a Legend, an Icon, a Character, a Jokester, a Mentor and a Good Friend. To us, he'll always be our Hero and our Daddy. Ralph W. "Buddy" Cortese, 77, long time resident of Fort Sumner, NM passed away on September 14, 2023 at UMC in Lubbock, TX. Buddy was born September 22, 1946 in Clovis, NM to the home of Ralph and Elizabeth "Lib" Adkisson Cortese, both of whom preceded him in death. He grew up and attended school in Fort Sumner, graduating with the FSHS class of 1964. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Ann (Robinson) Cortese, two daughters, Sarah (Jimmie) Fitzgerald of Fort Sumner, NM and Elizabeth (Ryan) Autrey of Texico, NM, and their children Della, Slate, Adalyn and Nathan respectively. He also helped raise a great niece, Misty (Chris) McShanag of Glendale, AZ. Their children are Hunter, Caleb, Madison and Heath. He is also survived by a brother, Nick (Karen) Cortese of Fort Sumner, NM and a sister, LuAnn Cortese Albuquerque, NM and a host of nieces, nephews and a community of friends. He was a lifelong member of Fort Sumner First Baptist Church and served as Financial Advisor. Buddy graduated from New Mexico State University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Ag Economics. During his senior year he was elected President of Sigma Rho fraternity and facilitated the obtainment of a national charter converting the organization to Sigma Chi Fraternity. Upon graduation, he began his professional career as a loan officer at Production Credit Association in Roswell, NM. He was appointed to the vice-president position before he decided to return home to the family farming and ranching business. During his involvement in agriculture, Buddy continued his interest in banking and finance. He was subsequently appointed to the board of directors for Production Credit Association in Clovis, NM in 1987. He served nine years, four of which were in the Chairman position. He later was elected to the district board of directors of Farm Credit Bank of Texas located in Austin, Texas. He served in this position from 1995 to 2022, including 12 years as board chairman. Buddy also chaired the bank’s compensation committee. Buddy’s financial expertise in the agricultural lending field also led to his election to the Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation (Farmer Mac) Board in Washington, DC where he served from 2003 to 2008. In 2012 he was elected to the Federal Farm Credit Banks Funding Corporation located in Jersey City, New Jersey. Buddy currently served as Chairman of the Corporation’s Governance Committee. In 2023 he was inducted into the Farm Credit Bank of Texas prestigious Academy of Honor. This designation afforded him the opportunity to give $25,000 to the University of his choice. Buddy’s choice was his Alma Mater, NMSU, and the recipient to be an agricultural economic student. He recently was named the NMSU Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business Outstanding Alumni. Buddy also enjoyed working on the mission field. He and his family were strong supporters of Disciples Village located in Haiti. What started as an orphan rescue mission is now an expansive effort dedicated to advancing third world villages with the light of Jesus Christ. Funeral Service information is pending at this time. Mark Alan Sawyer, 54 of House, NM passed away Saturday, September 9, 2023 in an auto accident north of Taiban. Mark was born August 31, 1969 in Santa Fe, New Mexico to the home of David and LaDonna (Mithcell) Sawyer. He attended schools in Santa Fe. Mark attended Gary Leffew's Bull Riding School. He travelled the bull riding circuit for a time until he was injured and had to leave bull riding. Mark worked in the building construction industry while living in Santa Fe, he worked installing tile. He made his home in Clovis in the mid 90's and continued to work in general building construction and as a plumbers helper. Mark enjoyed woodworking. Mark was baptized in 1995 at the Baptist Church in Clayton, NM. According to his mother, Mark had the softest heart and would do anything to help anyone if asked. He made his home in Clovis from the mid 90's until he moved to House, NM in 2021. He is preceded in death by his father David Leroy Sawyer in 1989, his step-father Ross Sinclair in 2012, two step-sisters Fayola Berry and JoAnn Luark, maternal grandparents Glenn and Mildred Mitchell and paternal grandparents Guy and Anna Jane Sawyer. Survivors include his mother LaDonna Sinclair of House, NM, three daughters Cortney Mackey (Joseph) of Midland, TX, Kayla Sawyer of Clovis, and Clara Odom of Clovis, three grandchildren Aubrey Mackey, Brooke Mackey, and Sebastain Sawyer Renova. Also surviving is a brother Rodney Sawyer of House, NM along with many family members from the Mitchell, Sawyer, Sinclair, Berry, and Luark families. Colonel Wellington Grissom "CW", 94 years old, of Taiban, New Mexico took his final ride August 3rd, 2023. He was at home on the ranch surrounded by family. C. W. was born July 3,1929 in Farwell, Texas son of Luther and Pearl (Foster) Grissom of Oklahoma Lane, Texas. He graduated from Oklahoma Lane High School in 1949 and attended Texas Tech University. College was interfering with his love life. He soon moved back to Bovina, so no one would steal his sweetheart away. Much to his surprise, he soon received a draft letter from the army. He promptly joined the Navy and shipped off to California. As soon as Janean graduated from high school, she proceeded to move to California and she and CW were married February 24, 1951. CW served four years aboard the USS Pine Island as a seaman Photographer. He served on three combat support Westpac deployments, Korean war, 1950 -1953. CW and Janean moved to Taiban in 1956 where they started their family and fulfilled their dreams of becoming ranchers. CW was a true cowboy and he was not afraid to wear his pink high top boots and his Silverbelly cowboy hat to any highfalutin function! Raising and racing horses was one of his true passions. He was a member of the NMHBA,AQHA and raced horses in Ruidoso Downs, Sunland Park, and Raton. Back in the day, he also enjoyed bowling, refereeing basketball games, hunting with his dogs, being an auctioneer, training horses, riding in the mountains and hauling his kids to horse races and rodeos. CW was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers ,Kenneth and Leon Grissom, two sisters, Lola Jean and Maxine Grissom and his wife of 72 years, Lena Janean Grissom. CW is survived by his sister, Caryetta Thomas, son Dwain Grissom, daughters Peggy(Merle) Spence & Kathy (John T) Basinger. Grandchildren, Wesley (Laci) Higgins, Ashley Baker and Brooke (Charlie) Kronschnabel. Great grandchildren, Aleigha, Paizley and Lyleigh Higgins, Degan Baker Duvall, Christian and Charlotte Kronschnabel. Immense gratitude to Irene Torres, and her family for the many years of love and care, they have been such a blessing to our family. Isidora Jane Sena, 84 of Borica, NM passed away peacefully on Friday, September 1, 2023, in Portales, NM. Isidora was born to Trenidad and Leonorcita (Casuas) Sena on May 15, 1939, in Borica, NM. Isidora was raised in Borica and attended school in Santa Rosa, graduating from Santa Rosa High School. Following graduation she attended Luna Vocational Technical Institute in Las Vegas, NM receiving a Certificate. A lifelong Catholic, she was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Borica. Isidora retired in 1995 from the Warren Inn in Santa Fe, NM where she was the assistant manager. In her spare time, Isidora loved painting in watercolors, sewing, arts and crafts, and kept a garden every year. Isidora is preceded in death by her parents Trenidad and Leonorcita, brothers Tommy E. and Teodoro Sena, sisters Veronica Sena and Sally Chavez, and brothers in law Joe Chavez, Candido Tafoya and Fred Wallace. Isidora is survived by her sisters: Isabell Tafoya of Portales, NM, Maria Wilkinson of Dallas, TX, Viola Salazar (Edward) of Albuquerque, NM, and Linda Lopez (Lupe) of Clovis, NM, brothers: Ralph Sena of Borica, NM, and Faustin Sena (Shirley) of Moriarty, NM.
