Barbara Handelman

Barbara Handelman

Age - 93

November 30, 2023

Wife, Mom and Baba, J. Barbara Handelman, led her 93 years with love. She died on November 28th at Benton House of Staley Hills Assisted Living. Born in Jefferson City, Barbara was a 1952 graduate of Saint Mary's Hospital Nursing School. After working as a nurse in Missouri, Illinois and New Jersey, she culminated her hospital nursing career at the old Menorah Medical Center. A longtime resident of Overland Park, Barbara and her husband, Bernard, owned a skilled nursing service and durable medical equipment company until their retirement in 1985. Such health care services were new to the Kansas City area at the time, and the pair set the tone for others to be measured. Barbara generously shared her unmatched thirst for knowledge. She took her young six children to a nearby town to give them the experience of riding the rails and trekked the city to help them spot rare specimens for school leaf projects. She shared her vast doll collection with local Girl Scout troops and traveled with her adult grandchildren to Florida, Canada, China, Ireland and other far-off places. Never prideful, she rather sought to share the gift of awe. At 90, Barbara took on a new pursuit, dog transports. Over more than two years, she accompanied her daughter on 40 transport legs, loving on rescue dogs bound for fosters and adopters and making friends of fellow volunteer dog transporters and coordinators along the many miles she traveled. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; sons, Paul and Steven; and brothers, Paul and John. A friend to all, she leaves behind a family she adored and many longtime friends. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Mike and Ann Handelman, Susan and Kevin Cozad, Ellen and Scott Stevenson, and Amy and Brad Bennett; grandchildren, Sarah, Lacey, Paul, Tom, Lily and Kaiya; great-grandchildren, Madeline, Holly, Rowan, Leo and Loewy; sister, Claire Slicker; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. There will be a private celebration of life and burial with immediate family members. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions go to The Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter (1356 NW Hwy 9, Parkville, MO 64152) or Catholic Community Health Hospice (16201 W. 95th St. , Ste. 220, Lenexa, KS 66219) To to the family or in memory of J. Elaine Worrell

Elaine Worrell

Age - 96

November 20, 2023

Elaine Louise Worrell, lovingly known as "Pinky," left this world on November 14, 2023, at the age of 96 in Olathe, Kansas. She was born on October 22, 1927, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Bill and Wilma George. Pinky sure knew how to make life colorful! Elaine was a true lifelong learner. She graduated from Paseo High School in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1944 at 17, and eloped with James Worrell, Sr. soon afterward on August 7, 1946, after he returned from WWII. Not one to shy away from adventure, Pinky attended secretarial school with TWA and dabbled in various programs, from stained glass making to computer programming and even travel agent training. Talk about a lady with a thirst for knowledge! When it came to her career, Pinky was a real go-getter. As a teenager, she worked at TWA and later became the power behind her husband James' real estate business. Once technology hit, he could not have run it without her because she was totally computer-literate, and he was NOT. After she raised her children, Elaine held a variety of administrative positions throughout her life, proving she could handle anything that came her way. Pinky's zest for life extended to her personal relationships. Survived by her son, James Worrell, Jr. (wife Janet Worrell), daughter Diane Worrell Dahl (husband Mike Dahl), grandson Harrison Dahl, and aunts, great nieces, and nephews, Pinky's love knew no bounds. She was also preceded in death by her parents, husband James Worrell, Sr. , three brothers-in-law, and a bunch of dear friends who are probably causing mischief up in heaven. Faith played an important role in Pinky's life, and she found solace at First Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kansas. She loved spending quality time with her family and a flock of friends. From business ventures to artistic endeavors and epic travels, Pinky knew how to make every moment count. She was a 4-yr. old at heart, with an infectious laugh/giggle, and the one who always brought the fun. In accordance with Elaine's wishes, there won't be any formal services to honor her. Instead, a laid-back gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate her incredible journey. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the fabulous team at Amos Family Funeral Home, located at 10901 Johnson Dr. Shawnee, KS 66203. Elaine Louise Worrell, a true force of nature with a heart full of joy, will forever be remembered for her playful, generous spirit and unwavering love. Her legacy is a vibrant tapestry of laughter, adventure, and memories that will keep us smiling for years to come. Pinky, you've left an indelible mark on our lives, and we're forever grateful for the colorful moments we shared. "Love you more", as you always said to us.
