Carol Wheeling Smith, 76, of Christiansburg, Va., had a happy and peaceful death at home February 28, 2024. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Michael Lowman, her parents, William Howard Wheeling and Sadie Vest, husband, Robert “Bob” Smith, and sister, Patricia Bryant. Her survivors include son, John Lowman (Beth), granddaughter, Elizabeth, stepson, Brian Canode (Ginger), and stepsister, Carol Trigg (Bud). In her final days, she was also with other special family and friends, including her niece, Brittany, friends and neighbors, Amy and Granville, Julie, Linda, Dean, and Connie, stepdaughters, Kim and Julie, and the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice and Cindy’s Compassion Care.Carol spent her early adulthood as a devoted wife and mother; later, she worked and retired from Kollmorgen Inland Motor, remarried, became a “social butterfly,” active in the Moose Lodge, VFW, card and Bible study groups, and volunteer at her local hospital. She was a long-time member of Dublin United Methodist Church and later Riverview Baptist Church. Those close to her will remember her contagious smile, sparkle in her eyes, deep faith, hope in eternal life, and love of God, family, and friends.She requested donations be made in her memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Born March 14, 1947 in Leland, NC she was the daughter of the late James M. Raftery and Carrie A. Sink Raftery. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Janice Wooten. She is survived by one son, James Hughes of Princeton; five grandchildren, Courtney Conner of Princeton, Daniel Woods of Princeton, Kenneth Dickerson of Princeton, Olivia Hughes of Princeton, and Destiny Belcher; and several great grandchildren. In keeping with Carrie’s wishes she will be cremated, and the family will have a memorial service at a later date.

Keith Elden Johnson, 89, of Christiansburg, formerly of Covington, passed away Monday morning, February 5, 2024, at his residence. He was born November 21, 1934, in Covington, to the late Oscar Millison and Opal Mae (Wolfe) Johnson. He married Emily Carol (Miller) Johnson on May 23, 1959 in Christiansburg; she preceded him in death April 10, 2004.Keith will be missed and remembered by his children, Keith Eric (Beverly) Johnson of St. Paris, Karen G. (Delbert) Davis of Christiansburg, and Kevin S. (Virginia) Johnson of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren Christine (Emile) Martin, Elizabeth (Lewis) Winecoff, Nicole (Anthony) Helman, Ashley (Justin) Wolford, Travis Johnson, Collin (Morgan) Johnson; great-grandchildren Madison Winecoff, Dylan Gaston, Madeline & Mason Winecoff, Kora Wilden, Mikayla Cadena, Connor Wolford, Rylee Wilden, Emilee Wolford, Mack Johnson and Josephine Helman. He was preceded in death by all his siblings, Ralph, Don, Carl, Dick, Gene and Ronald Johnson, and Lois Lacey.Mr. Johnson attended Covington schools and served in the National Guard. He retired from Delco-Moraine after 30 years of service, and had also owned and operated Johnson’s Lawnmower Repair for 27 years. He was a member of Christiansburg United Methodist Church, a 63-year member of the Masonic Lodge Mt. Olivet #226 in Christiansburg, Eastern Star and Scottish Rite, Odd Fellows and Christiansburg Kiwanis. Keith also was a 31-year member of the Christiansburg Fire Department and had served on Christiansburg Village Council.A memorial service to honor his life will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, February 9, at Christiansburg United Methodist Church, 7 E. Third St., Christiansburg, with Pastor Mark Atterholt officiating. Masonic and Fire Department services will also be held. Friends may visit with the family from 3-5 p.m. Friday at the church. Donald G. Mottesheard passed away at Commonwealth Senior Living in Christiansburg, Virginia on February 21, 2024. Don was a member of Unity Christian Church in Radford. He graduated Milligan University in Elizabethton, Tennessee and then served in the U.S. Army. After teaching school for a few years in Pulaski, Virginia, he then worked for the City of Radford for 38 1/2 years.He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Ray and Allie Hurst Mottesheard, sisters Helen Augusta Mottesheard and Geneva Leona Mottesheard, brothers Clifton Hurst Mottesheard, and Samuel Ray Mottesheard, and a nephew Gary Noel Mottesheard. Survivors include his brother Max Garland Mottesheard, nieces, Candace Mottesheard Smith (Lenny) and Donna Jean Laux (Richard Slagter), nephews Jerry Wayne Mottesheard, Jeffery Mottesheard (Linda), Phillip Mottesheard (Jenny) and many others family members and friends.The family will receive friends at Unity Christian Church from 4-6 pm on Thursday February 29. Douglas P. McCarthy, affectionately known as Doug, passed away on February 11, 2024 in Christiansburg, VA. He was born to Patrick and Bridget McCarthy on April 17, 1984 in Springfield, MA. He grew up in Ludlow, MA and enrolled in the Navy in 2006 aboard the US Oak Hill (LSD 51). Doug was a dedicated and proud brother, leaving behind his two sisters, Kathryn and Jennifer, his brother Joseph and his wife Kathleen. Doug was a proud uncle of three nieces, two nephews, and had countless aunts, uncles, cousins; whom he loved dearly. As a soldier, Doug served two deployments and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, serving in the Vessel Board Search and Seizure Team. He was trained in Blackwater and spent years traveling the world. Doug’s brilliance was noted in his journalism and his natural way with words. He shared his world with his poetic words that captured the hardships and truths of life. He channeled this by helping and advocating for Veterans by establishing numerous federal grants to help homeless Vets. Doug was naturally drawn to helping others. His love and support will be missed dearly.
