Joanne Barrett

Joanne Barrett

Age - 85

November 30, 2023

Joanne Geraldine Barrett (nee Crowley), 85, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 21, 1938. The proud daughter of the late Donald Sr. and Rose Crowley (nee Gaspar), Joanne was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister to Patricia, Georgia, and Donald Jr. She peacefully entered eternal rest on November 22, 2023, in Munster, Indiana. Joanne is survived by her three children, Carolyn (Dan), Karyn, and Christopher (Alejandra), who will always cherish the memories they shared with her. She will be missed by her six grandchildren, Megan, Kevin, Roscee, Dillon, Madeline, and Vincent, as well as three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Daniel, and Liam. She is preceded in death by her sister, Georgia, and brother, Donnie. Whether it was a scenic forest in Louisiana, delicious homemade kolacky, or memorable music, Joanne enjoyed surrounding herself with the beautiful things in life. She had a knack for making everything lovely and appreciated the beauty and mystery of the world around her. An accomplished stained glass artist, Joanne's creations showed immense talent, patience, exquisite attention to detail, and quiet intelligence--reflecting who she was as a person. From making her famous pineapple upside-down cake to creating artwork from macrame and branches, Joanne's creativity shone through in everything she did and touched. However, she could also be silly and enjoyed having fun. She always appreciated a good gathering and spending time with family and friends; her infectious laughter could fill the room. Joanne's sharp wit, honesty, and caring nature endeared her to those she met. Though it appeared Joanne had a tough exterior at times, she had a heart of gold and passion for those in need. She desired a fairer, more compassionate world, and she will be terribly, terribly missed. In a recent Facebook post to her grandson, Joanne wrote, ". . . remember to make the most of each and every day. " We will celebrate and honor her spirit by striving to do the same, each and every day. A celebration of Joanne's life is planned for a later date. Larry's legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew him. He was an incredibly loving husband, father, grandpa, paw-paw and friend. He enjoyed spending his time outdoors hunting and fishing and passing that love to his family and friends. There wasn't anything he couldn't build or fix. You could always find him drinking a cup of coffee and eating some sweets and believed a trip to Dairy Queen would fix a belly that burned. He loved teasing his grandkids and making them smile. He made them believe that the tooth fairy would visit and leave a $100 bill if he placed his teeth under his pillow for spending money. His dogs were treated like princesses, eating treats all day, table food at dinner and getting belly rubs on demand. Larry was a lifelong Chicago sports fan, he loved the Bears, Bulls and White Sox. Dorothy Marten

Dorothy Marten

Age - 96

November 21, 2023

We celebrate the life of our dear Dorothy Beverly Marten born March 31, 1927, in Ottawa, Illinois, to Alice (Frost) and William Milligan where she joined her big brother Bill whom she adored. Dorothy met and fell in love with Edward J. Marten in Ottawa for whom she was a continual support after he was conscripted to war. They were married on September 1, 1946, and had four children together. Dorothy loved her family with all her heart. They were her greatest joy. She was generous and always made sure everyone's gifts were even. No one was left out. No one was favored. We all knew we were the favorite. Her encouragement, wisdom, and shoulders were freely available to family, friends, and all in need of them. She thought of everyone first, herself last, and gave the best hugs. She loved to watch all the best television. Dynasty, Love Boat, and I Love Lucy were favorites. When the grandchildren stayed at Gramma's and Grampa's, together they got to watch the shows banned by their parents. Dorothy loved to bake, cook, and eat. And especially loved to eat out at Denny's. Some of our favorite memories with her are of food. It wasn't a surprise when she would go into the kitchen and begin baking in the evening. She always had cookies and sweets and loved to share. She loved caramel macchiatos with extra caramel and would nurse that all day long. She contributed to and helped compile the recipe book "The Cherished Recipes of Glendale Heights. " One of her true passions was shopping. She gifted us with toys, books, and the trendiest clothes. She was always glamorous when the occasion called for it, even if that occasion meant lounging on the couch in pastel pajamas. Her earrings were always on. Her nails were always polished. There was always a hidden tissue tucked in her sleeve. She had the most beautiful soprano voice and was always singing. As she walked and breathed, she sang. Her fondness was the songs of her childhood including That's Amore, Eye Winky Brow Brinky, Mares Eat Oats, and Row, Row, Row Your Boat, after which she always said, "Life certainly is but a dream, isn't it?" Dorothy worked at Anchor Products for 45 years. She loved to work. She welcomed the challenge of the computer as its implementation rose in prominence over the decades. She also worked at Fannie May Chocolate, and it was always a treat when she brought "work" home to us. In her early years, she was a church secretary at Zion Evangelical Lutheran, Ottawa, Illinois. Dorothy loved Jesus with her whole heart. She talked to Him about us, and she reminded us regularly that she prayed specifically for us. She showed us how to love each other and taught us to live in peace. She loved because He first loved her. She is in heaven having run her race and is celebrating with her Savior. Dorothy is survived by her children Carole Sullivan, Mary (George) Toben, and Dorothy Sue (Joe) Stewarts; grandchildren Donna (Corby) Blem, D. Michael Sullivan, Stephanie Sullivan, Christine (David Finkle) Laadimi, George "Teg" (Katie) Toben, John (Deena) Toben, Edward (Veronica) Toben, Paul (Katie) Toben, Sarah (Tony Hernandez) Stewarts, Kelly (Lance) Conway, Tyler Stewarts, Amy Stewarts, Jacob Stewarts, and Maggie Stewarts; Great Grandchildren Andrew (Angel) Messersmith, Benjamin Messersmith, Logan Duclos, Zoe Duclos, Jocelyn Toben, Elaina Toben, Lily Toben, Hannah Toben, Nathan Toben, Elijah Toben, Isabella Toben, Sophia Toben, Lalito Toben, Abby Conway, Joel Conway, Kate Conway, Collin Conway, and Gwen Conway. Proceeding her in death were her husband Edward J. Marten, son Edward William (Jay) Marten, mother and father Alice Elizabeth and William Randolph Milligan, brother William Milligan, sister-in-law Alvis Marten, niece Gail Milligan, son-in-law Donald Sullivan, and granddaughter Cheryle Messersmith. And as she often said, now we get to say, "Mom, Gramma, and Nana, we love you more. " Dorothy's Memorial Service in celebration of her life will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Highland, Indiana, on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 10:40 a. m. Samantha Marie Zimny passed away Thursday, November 16, 2023. She is survived by: loving husband Travis Mott, parents Stanley and Christine Zimny, siblings Stephanie and Scott Zimny and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends from across the world. Sam packed an exorbitant amount of life into her years while with us. She worked at everything she did with a vigor unknown to the common person, taking on any challenge with unflinching resolve. After studying Mathematics and Linguistics at Indiana University, she moved to the Far East, mastered Japanese, traveled ad nauseam, covering Asia, Africa, Europe, and most recently the Pan American route via motorcycle with her husband. Sam's love for her family was strongly pronounced in her daily video calls, game nights at home surrounded by loved ones, and the unceasing insistence on driving others to realize their highest potential. Sam's favorite season was autumn. She loved to play the match-maker with her friends and share memorable moments forming close bonds with anyone willing to dig deep. She worked at the State Department in her college years, education afterward, and later at Apple and other tech companies. Her passion was health and wellness related. She was an entrepreneur mounting her own business as a certified massage therapist. Sam would most proudly call herself a healer as she was most passionate about helping others.
