Jacqueline Ann Canterbury, 81, gained her wings on October 6, 2023, with her family by her side. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jacqueline Szasz-Sowards Samson, Deborah and David Bannister, and Janet Johnson. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She watched over her grandchildren, from the oldest to the baby, spanning over 35 years. Jacqueline loved her family, the beach, lighthouses, and Elvis. To continue her warmth and kindness are her grandchildren, John Szasz IV and his wife Rose, Zachary Szasz and his wife Erica, David Bannister Jr. and his wife Lindsey, Kalissa Fullen and her husband Anthony, Chloe Johnson and Annajane Crago. She leaves behind nine great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a. m. Monday, October 9, 2023, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1000 6th Street, Charleston, WV. Entombment will immediately follow at Montgomery Memorial Park, London, WV. Visitation will begin one hour prior at the church. Carolyn Jean Murdock, 75, of Cross Lanes, WV, passed away into the arms of her Lord and Savior on November 28, 2023, after an extended illness. She was born on April 4, 1948 in Charleston, WV, and was a graduate of Sissonville High School. She was an Office Manager for PPG Industries for many years and then moved into manufactured housing sales. In the eyes of the world, she didn't have a long list of accomplishments. However, to her family, she was a treasure. She loved and adored her children and grandchildren. She was a huge fan of golf and football and knew more about these sports than most. Most importantly, Carolyn was a Christian who had loved the Lord since she was a child and had fond memories of walking to church with her grandmother. She followed through in believer's baptism approximately 20 years ago and we are thankful to know she is at peace now and with Jesus. "We will miss your love and laughter for the rest of our lives, until we are all reunited again in heaven. " Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Claude Holmes, Sr. , and Stella Holmes; her husband, Russell Murdock; brother, Claude Holmes, Jr. ; grandson Christian Bailey, and niece, Emily Holmes. Surviving Carolyn is her daughter, Carrie Perkins (Jeff) of Cross Lanes; son, Chuck Bailey (Vikki Farmer) of Clarksville, TN; son, Craig Bailey of Clarksville; grandchildren, Caitlyn Perkins, Jenna Perkins and Trey Bailey; sister, Irene Mangus (Fred) of Charleston; brother, Darrell Holmes (Cindy) of Friendwood, TX; nieces, Dianna Mangus and Nicole Saunders, and nephews, Jeff Mangus and Andrew Holmes. To honor Carolyn, a memorial service will be held at 1:00 p. m. Mrs. Josepha Marie Young-Hamilton, 80 years old, of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2023, after a long illness. Josepha, known as "Mama" or "Josie," pursued a lifelong career and retired from the United States Postal Service. She started her career at the United State Postal Service in 1970. She was the First Black Woman in West Virginia awarded a Mail Handlers' position. Josepha's accomplishments and professionalism throughout her Postal Service career are noted. She was appointed Shop Steward for the Mail Handlers Union for a period of five years. In 1980, she transferred to Brooklyn, New York, and in 1982 was detailed to Acting Supervisor. In 1983, she was promoted to supervisor and was assigned the Primary Secondary Operations. Due to her proficiency and operational knowledge, in 1995, management assigned her to the Manual Flats Operation, where she acquired the name "Mama. " She was known not only as a supervisor, but wore many hats, such as warden, counselor, physician, psychologist, teacher, travel agent, tour guide, sports enthusiast, but most of all, friend to many. Josepha retired in April 2001 and returned to West Virginia in 2012. Josepha was preceded in death by her Mother (Rose Willis), Father (Joseph Earley), Son (James Earley), Brother (Mike Earley), Sister-N-law Gracie Earley-Gardner, Grandmother (Elsie Jackson), Aunt (Carrie Mae Wallace), Niece (Rochelle Earley), Nephew (Mikhail Howard), and Cousin (Cary Johnson) Left to treasure her memories: Leopold Hamilton (Brooklyn, NY), Daughter Rose Pleasant, Daughter Alice Turpin (Gary), Daughter Sally Burkes (James), all of Charleston; Grandkids: Robert Pleasant (Emily) of Charleston, Effoloia Young of Huntington, Milton Pleasant (Natasha) of Springfield, Ohio, Patrick Earley of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Elijah Pleasant of Charleston, Kiana Earley-Palafox (Gibran) of Arizona, James Earley, Josiah Earley of California; two nieces: Kelly and Michelle Earley, and nephew Mike Earley, all of California. She also had seven great-grandkids and a host of lifelong friends. A Celebration of Life will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p. m. 64, of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2023. Affectionately known as "Nise" and "Sister," Denise was born to Sister Lincoln Jones and Eugene Jones, Sr. , in Patterson, New Jersey, on January 5, 1959. Nise graduated from Barringer High School, where she was a choir member and led the pep squad during rival football games. In 2009, Nise earned an associate degree and in 2011, she earned a bachelor's degree in theology from The Abundant Life Ministries Bible College. Nise had an extensive employment history of over 30 years. She worked in the culinary field and was an employee of several restaurants including Applebee's and Olive Garden. Nise retired from Olive Garden over two years ago. Over 20 years ago, Nise relocated to Charleston, WV. Prior to relocating, Nise was baptized at The Greater Abyssinian Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, where she was a choir member. Shortly after her relocation to Charleston, she rededicated herself at the Liberty Missionary Baptist Church and later transferred her membership to The Father's House Missionary Baptist Church. Sister Denise was a member of many missionaries, including the Mass Choir, Pastor's Aid Society, and President of the Usher Board. Nise was the church cook, a responsibility which included serving breakfast every Sunday and cooking for special events such as church picnics, anniversaries, and Vacation Bible School. Sister Denise also served as a Sunday School Teacher. Nise consistently praised God. Her favorite saying was "" Hallelujah" "Hallelujah. " She had a big personality that lit up any room she entered. Thank GOD she was able to live her life to the fullest and accomplish most of her life goals. Nise found her passion and purpose early in life. Sister Denise is described as a sinner who fell in love with Jesus Christ, the son of The Living GOD. Her street ministry, which she loved dearly, was feeding the hungry and sharing her testimony of God's goodness. On Thursdays and major holidays, she fed the hungry. Nise has one beloved son, James Jones (Muhammad) and daughter in law Cassandra 'Nisey" Hagans, whom she loved dearly. Nise and her son had a special relationship. When he made surprise visits, she glowed with pride. Nise was preceded in death by her beloved older brother, Allen Jones. Robert Ernest Ware, 66, was born in Charleston, West Virginia, to the late Edward N. and Fannie (Jackson) Ware on February 11, 1957. He peacefully departed this Earthly life on Monday, November 20, 2023. Richard was educated in Kanawha County Schools, graduating from Charleston High School. After high school, Richard worked as an electrician for several companies and as a lineman for the local cable company. He began having major health issues and was unable to continue in his chosen career path. As his health allowed him, he enjoyed volunteering at St. John's Manna Meal program, helping to prepare and serve food to those in need. Richard attended and became a member of St. Paul AME Church in Charleston, under the leadership of Rev. John Sylvia, where he enjoyed attending Bible Study and talking about Jesus. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother James Ware, sisters Sheila Sims and Loretta Ware, niece Shannon Brown and great-nephew Akeem Andrews-Tyson. Richard leaves to cherish his memories, son, Dustin Ware (Andrea) of Columbus, Ohio; granddaughter, Jacynda Ware Columbus; brothers, Jerry L. Ware (Amanda) and Houston B. Ware, both of Charleston, Stephen L Ware (Karen) of Shady Springs, Georgia, and sisters, Deborah Tyson (Richard) of Houston, Texas, Rev. Carolyn F. Hairston of Charleston and Lisa Lugo (Rafael) of Alexandria, Virginia. Richard will also be missed by sister-in-law Linda Ware of Alpharetta, Georgia, and a host of nieces and nephews and friends.
