"Glen Lee Budvarson "Lee" was called peacefully in his sleep, to his heavenly home, on Nov 23rd 2023, at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Nancy Nadine Sagers Budvarson, and his four children, Darla Rae Budvarson Hanson (Gerald Wayne "Jerry"), Tori Lynn Budvarson Epperson (James Harold "Mick"), Robin Dee Budvarson Player (David Player-deceased), and Brett Lee Budvarson (Dana Lee Schear). He was proceeded in death by his parents, Gunnar Budvarson, and Beatrice Joyce Pritchett Budvarson, and his siblings, Vivian Beatrice Budvarson Wilhite (Bill), and Richard Ned Budvarson (Mary Lou Wilhite). Both his parents came from large families, so Lee had 29 aunts and uncles and their spouses to help raise him. He was very proud of his "Icelandic" heritage on his father's side. Lee was born on December 24th, 1929 in Fairview, Utah, while his mother was visiting her family for Christmas. He lived all his life in San Diego. Lee grew up attending the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved boy scouts, camping, hiking in the canyons and nearby mountains, and of course surfing at the beach. He also played the drums in a marching band around town. His brother, Richard, played the trumpet. He grew up in a small house his father had built right off of Fairmont Ave in east San Diego. He attended Alexander Hamilton Elementary, Mann Jr. High and Hoover High School. He enrolled in San Diego Community College after high school and worked nights for the telephone company. After the death of his father in 1949, he and his mother went to stay with his grandmother Olive Pritchett, in Salt Lake City. It was here that he met Nancy Nadine Sagers, who was working in Salt Lake City and was renting a room, along with her best friend, from Lee's grandmother. Nancy soon introduced him to her large extended family, who owned a cattle ranch about 1 hour to the west in St. John, Tooele County, Utah. Lee was loved by both of Nancy's parents, and taken right in as part of the family. They were married and sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on March 15th, 1950. Lee worked at Christiansen Diamond company as an industrial diamond setter, and Nancy became a housewife a few months before Darla was born the next year. Lee loved to play softball and basketball, and most Friday and Saturday nights were spent at the ball fields. The lived in Salt Lake for about 5 years, spending most weekends in St. John with Nancy's family. In March 1956 Lee and his brother, Richard, decided to start a new business, in San Diego, called, "Photo Arts". So, Lee and Nancy moved back to San Diego, were they stayed. Tori was born in July of 1956. Richard and Lee had a contract with Convair, to prepare large 4' x 12' sheets of steel for use in making airplane parts. They also ran a printing business along with this. They made booklets, menus, & school flyers. They always donated the sacrament farewell programs for any young man in the church in the San Diego area, leaving on a mission. Lee and Nancy lived in the same home that Lee had grown up in, until 1959, when they built a house in Spring Valley, on a hill near Bancroft and 94. It was so big compared to where they had been living, and had a beautiful view, but it was difficult to grow a garden like they wanted, in the rocky slopes. The avocado and fruit trees did pretty well though. Robin was born while living here in 1961. In 1964 Convair lost their contract to make airplanes, so Richard and Lee were losing their only customer. It was then, that Lee bought Surge dairy Products. He sold soaps, milking machines and vet supplies to all the dairymen in San Diego and Imperial Counties. In 1968, Lee and Nancy finally had their first boy, Brett. Lee had waited a long time for this and he was so proud. Lee owned Surge com until about 1970, when he was offered a job at Western States Cast Stone, where they made molds for the intricate scrolling on the sides of buildings in Balboa Park and other buildings in the area. He worked there about 2 years. Then the owner of California Pools, Dave Morrell offered Lee a job supervising the building of pools in San Diego. During this time, he went to school at night, to get his contractors license for building swimming pools. He also starting doing all the plumbing and electrical on the pools as a subcontractor himself. This was very hard work and long hours. In 1982 he decided to buy some property and build a house in Jamul near the Cottonwood Golf Course. It was a beautiful home on an acre of flat land, so they were able to have a great garden and lots of fruit trees. So after 11 years of the pool industry, he went to work for Standard Electronics in 1983, as an Fire Alarm, security, & intercom estimator. He worked their until he retired in July 1996. Lee then bought property on Proctor Valley Road and built his third and final home. Lee always enjoyed taking his family hiking, camping and on many fun outings at the beach. Lee loved to snow ski, & water ski on one ski and show off that he could take off and land near the edge of the water on the bay and not even get his suit wet. When Brett was only 3 or 4 he took the family backpacking in the San Gorgonio mountains. He and Brett later took many backpacking trips in the Sierra's and other mountains in California. He taught his girls all about car maintenance and how to do minor repairs. They were not allowed to drive until they knew how to change a tire and maintain a vehicle. All of his children learned how to play many sports because of his example. Lee held many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was Priest quorum advisor, Counselor in the Bishopric several times and Bishop of the Spring Valley Ward from 1968 to 1972. He also served as a High Councilor, and multi-regional Sports director, Financial Clerk, Executive Secretary and Elders Quorum councilor. He was always teaching youth and giving them advice. He had a strong testimony of his Savior, Jesus Christ and of the Plan of Salvation. He had such a tender heart and bore his testimony with his tears many times. He and his wife Nancy, have left a great legacy of 4 children & their spouses, 19 grandchildren & their spouses, and 54 greatgrandchildren, with some married, and 1 on the way, and 2 great, great, grandchildren.
