Monte Manka

Monte Manka

Age - 97

November 30, 2023

Born November 25th, 1926, in El Dorado, Kansas, Monte Manka entered this world the son of Wayne & Marjorie Manka. He grew up under all the hallmarks of a Midwestern childhood alongside his brother Leslie enjoying the company of a horse named Ten-Spot and a dog named Queenie. Between responsibilities across the family farm outside El Dorado in the township of Chelsea. He was a 1945 graduate of El Dorado High School. He was called to serve his country as a soldier in the Unites States Army in the final years of WWII. During that time, he was stationed at a military hospital outside of Seoul, Korea. Traveling from a small Kansas town across the Pacific Ocean to the faraway country of Korea had a large impression on him. He spoke of the experience fondly for many years with plenty of stories to share. Upon his return to the United States, Monte had the fortunate chance of meeting Shirley Goetz at a community picnic in 1950. They were married in only 6 weeks leading to a successful marriage of 69 years. They had two children, Scott Manka, born January 18th, 1957, and Lori Manka-Lonski born May 25th, 1958. The Manka family continued to reside in El Dorado, Kansas while Monte worked for the local Skelly Refinery, until experiencing the deadly El Dorado Tornado of 1958. Vowing never to put his family thru another tornado scare, a hasty decision was made by Monte to quickly sell the spared family home and put his sights on the California dream with a move to Southern California. First settling with Shirley and the kids in an apartment in Harbor City, they quickly found a more permanent residence in a home in the developing city of Lakewood. Monte found initial success in the burgeoning petroleum industry collecting samples for the Richfield Company Petroleum Lab. He eventually crossed paths with Lakewood neighbor Kenny Manness, of Manness Excavating, which led to a prosperous career in another burgeoning Southern California industry, Construction. As a member of the Teamsters, Monte drove high side semi-trucks and water trucks for construction projects across the Southern California area, having a front row seat to the area's development. In his retirement years there were many trips to Laughlin, Nevada with Shirley. Always on the search for the newest life could offer, Monte made his first move in retirement from his then home in Anaheim to a newly built home in Corona in 1988. Followed by a move in 2000 to the new four seasons age-restricted resort community in Hemet and a return to Corona in 2012. Retirement also allowed him time to dedicate to another avocation, poetry. Monte was a gifted poet, actively writing about his farm life past, Army days, and the struggles and successes of everyday life, amassing over three volumes of poetry. He also used spare time to visit with friends at the local doughnut shop and in recent years Betty Fae's Cafe. With every new neighborhood and every new adventure there was no doubt Monte was on his way to adding to his wide array of friendships. Wherever life took him, there was the opportunity to meet new people and quickly turn strangers into familiar faces. Monte left this world for the next on Sunday, October 29th, 2023. He was, in his words, 96 years young. He is survived by his daughter, four grandchildren, and three Great Grandchildren.Show more
