Irma Jean Murphy passed away peacefully at her home on November 13, 2023, at 92 years old. Jean was born in Mishawaka, Indiana on October 3, 1931, to the late Edward and Hazel (Potts) Steffens. She married Leo Joseph Murphy on June 5, 1949. Jean and Leo had ten children. They adopted numerous collie dogs and stray cats. Beverly Ann Wachowiak, 80, passed away at home on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Beverly was born on August 28, 1943 in South Bend, IN to the late Morris S. (Casey) and Rose Jones. On August 05, 1972, Beverly married the love of her life, Benny Wachowiak. Together they raised their son, the late Morris B. Wachowiak. She took pride in being a good wife to Benny and loving mother to her son, Morris. Bev attended Adams High School. She worked as a school bus driver for South Bend Community School Corp. for several years. She was a member of MR Falcons, PNA, and a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church. Bev loved to dance and loved the Chicago Bears. She was an avid online shopper, QVC & HSN will truly miss her. Bev was an amazing cook specializing in anything Hungarian or Polish. Bev leaves behind her step-mother, Sharon “Sherri” Jones, Uncle & Aunt, Don and Judy Ruszkowski, and cousins, Scott (Cathi), Rick (Chrissy), Don and Dan (Deceased). She is also survived by in-laws and cousins: Batalis, esp. “Dino, Denny, & Brent”, Boembeke, Ham, Horvath, Koziatek, Ruszkowski, Wachowiak, Witham and many other relatives. Amy was born on March 06, 1970 in South Bend, IN to John S. and Connie (Mossell) Balint, Jr. She was preceded in death by her father, John Balint, Jr. Amy married Michael Riley. Left to cherish Amy’s memory are her children, Dustin Walker and Brittany Riley; mom, Connie Balint; sisters, Heather (Terry) Ciesielski, Leslie Irish, Kristen (Mike) Balint; and several nieces and nephews. Amy was a 1988 Washington High School graduate. She worked for Sear's in the automotive department for over 20 years and at the Potawatomi Zoo. Catherine Fisher Obituary Catherine Joan McCammon Fisher Catherine passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, after a long illness. Born November 26, 1960, in South Bend, Indiana to Charles and Mary Joan McCammon, she graduated from Clay High School and worked many years as an LPN. She married Van Fisher in 1978. Their two children survive: her son, Vincent (Michele) and daughter Jamie (Jerry) Snyder. Also surviving is grand-daughter Layla, grandson Anthony, great grand-daughter Audrey Mae and great grand-daughter Alena Jane, to be born in March. Others include her mother, Mary Joan McCammon, her sister Heidi Ann (Bill) Leighty, nephew William Leighty, niece Amanda Leighty Newcomer and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Van and her father, Charles W. McCammon. James S. Galwas, Sr., 78 years old, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at his residence in South Bend. James was born on May 1, 1945 in South Bend, IN to the late Stephen and Martha (Ebel) Galwas. Left to cherish their memory of James are his children, James (Micki) Galwas, Jr. and Jennifer Galwas; grandchildren, Alexis Felty, Austin Albright, and Noah Galwas: sister, Joan Roberts; and several nieces and nephews. James graduated from Washington High School in 1963. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served his nation during the Vietnam war where he was based in Hawaii and the Pacific. After being honorably discharged, James worked at RACO, where he retired after 44 years. James was a member of the American Legion Post 284, where he bartended every Friday night for 30 years. He was affectionately known as Jimmy by everyone in the club. James would always look forward to eating breakfast with his best friends, Larry Jarze, who he knew from gradeschool, and Chris Noetzel every Wednesday and Saturday at Allie’s Café. He also loved going to the casino and would routinely go every Thursday. Above all, James loved spending time with his family. Visitation for James will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Friday, March 8, 2024 at St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., South Bend, IN with a Funeral Service to begin at 1:00 pm. Evelyn L. (Mathews) Kovach, 91, of South Bend, passed away in the early afternoon on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, surrounded by her family. Evelyn was born on February 19, 1933 in Fredrick, Maryland, to the late Russell M. and Lucille (Titus) Mathews. She moved to South Bend and remained a lifelong resident to the area. On March 4, 1984, in South Bend, she married Joseph Kovach. They shared 23 years of marriage until his passing in 2007. Evelyn was a wonderful homemaker. She loved spending time with her family and especially with her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards in her spare time. Evelyn is survived by her children, Donna L. (William) Ricker of Mishawaka, Leonard R. (Cheryl) Jobe, Jr., of South Bend and Brian K. (Linda) Jobe of St. Petersburg, FL, and by six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Jane (Richard) Warrenfeltz, and by her brother, Bobby Mathews both of Keymar, MD. Along with her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by seven brothers. Friends may visit with the family on Monday March 4th, from 10:00am until Service time in the Hanely and Sons Funeral Home, 23421 State Rd. 23, South Bend. A service celebrating Evelyn’s life will be held at 11:00am in the funeral home with Pastor Dave Abbott of St. Paul Memorial Church officiating. Jack Szczesniak, 76, of South Bend, passed away on Tuesday February 27, 2024 in his home. He was born on October 31, 1947, in London, England, to the late Boleslaw and Natalia Szczeniak. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Leszek and Andrew. Jack worked as a Security Guard at the St. Joseph County/City Building for over 35 years, before retiring in the mid-2000’s. Jack was a Sergeant for the United States Army Reserve after serving over 20 years. He is survived by his friend, Pete (Sarah) Shaw of South Bend and many many friends from years of visiting the local watering holes. He enjoyed collecting military memorabilia especially World War II German memorabilia. Mary A. Carmola Brehl, age 94, of South Bend, Indiana, a dedicated matriarch, Notre Dame enthusiast, and community member passed away on Wednesday, February 28th, 2024. She was born on April 26th, 1929, in Dover Ohio, to the late Nicholas and Lucrecia (Guinnet) Contini. Mary was preceded in death by her first husband, Anthony A. Carmola, whom she married on August 25th, 1949, and who passed away April 3, 1999, and her second husband, Bernard Brehl, whom she later married on July 1, 2004, and who passed away on July 15th, 2010. She was also preceded in death by one son, Lawrence Carmola. Mary is survived by two daughters, Christianne McSweeney of Alexandria, Virginia, and Susanne (Richard) Seall of South Bend, Indiana, and one son, Michael (Michelle) Carmola of Granger, Indiana. Mary was a proud grandmother to Christopher McSweeney, Nicole (James) Lawler, Molly (Patrick) Kelly, Laurie (Allyson Matthews) Seall, Nicholas (Layne) Carmola, Anthony Carmola and Jacob Carmola, as well as six great-grandchildren, Rya, Keira, Ivey Lawler and Jackson, Claire, and Kathryn Kelly. Mary cherished her family deeply and was actively involved in their lives. She loved teaching her grandchildren how to drive her silver Honda and she never missed any of her family’s athletic events, always cheering them on from the sidelines. Her involvement extended beyond her family, as she was a member of Christ Child Society of South Bend. Mary was particularly passionate about the Christmas Bazaar, where she joyfully contributed to the community’s festive spirit. In her earlier years, Mary was very active with the Holy Cross PTA, planning dances, serving “Bun Day,” and being a room mother. Her Italian heritage made Sunday family dinners very important, where she often served her famous spaghetti, meatballs, and apple pie. Mary’s love for Notre Dame Football was unparalleled. She worked in the football office for many years, including the memorable year of 1988 when the team won the National Championship. Her dedication to the university extended beyond football, as she spent 35 years working in various positions, mainly in the athletic department. One of Mary’s most cherished roles was being tailgate hostess at every Notre Dame home game, where she delighted a huge crowd with her homemade Italian cooking. Her passion for the Fighting Irish was infectious, and she created lasting memories for all who knew her. Mary A. Carmola Brehl’s family would like to express their gratitude to Darden Home for providing a loving, safe, and warm environment for Mary, especially to her caregiver Shareen. They would also like to thank Caring Cove Hospice for their incredible care and support. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 6 at 9:30am in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
