Irma Margarita Chavez Moncivais, more affectionately known as Irma, peacefully passed away from natural causes on September 8, 2023, in Grand Rapids, MI. She was born on June 23, 1949, in the town of Canitas Zacatecas, Mexico, but was raised primarily in Torreon. Her spirit reflected the warmth and vitality of her hometown throughout her life. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 13th at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St. SE, from 1:00-3:00pm. Irma was a dedicated and loving individual who always put family first. She is survived by her life partner Antonio Covarrubias, her sisters Mary Chavez, and Paty Ortega Reyes. Irma's legacy lives on through her four children, Enira Bautista, Victor Bautista II (Diane George), Jonathan Bautista (Alicia), Josue Bautista (Sha'kena), and her two stepsons, Jose Covarrubias and Alberto Covarrubias. Her memory will also be cherished by her 18 grandchildren, Karen Reyes (Tomas Lopez), Karyme Reyes Garcia, Viviana Hernandez, Marcello Young, Victor M. (Manny) Bautista III, MacKenzie McDaniel, Marcelino Bautista, Jaydin Bautista, Luciano Bautista, Marzia Bautista, Josue Bautista Jr. , Sauntianna Bautista, Aliyah Bautista, A'mora Bautista, Jose Covarrubias Jr. , Juan Covarrubias, Vianca Covarrubias, Victoria Covarrubias and 6 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy and vitality to her life. She was preceded in death by her mother, Consuelo Moncivais, her father, Francisco Chavez, her siblings, Raquel Chavez and Juvencio Chavez, her son, Jose Carlos Reyes, and her stepson Juan Antonino Covarrubias. Irma's journey of life was marked by hard work and determination. After graduating from college as a registered nurse in Mexico, she dedicated herself to fulfilling her family's needs. She was also an advocate for immigrants and marched with Cesar Chavez. She worked with an immigrant lawyer to aid in legal affairs for migrant workers. She continued working until she later became disabled, but Irma's perseverance didn't stop there. She worked tirelessly towards gaining her American citizenship, a feat she achieved in 2017, demonstrating her unwavering resolve and commitment. In her youth, Irma was an enthusiastic athlete, taking pleasure in playing both softball and soccer. Her zest for life was evident on the dance floor, where she could often be found dancing until the sun came up. Irma was a woman of faith, who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life - spending time with her family, cooking delectable meals, thrifting, and most importantly, laughing. Her generosity knew no bounds, and she was often referred to as a "mom to everyone. " Irma's home was a sanctuary for all, including neighborhood cats and dogs, and was filled with the comforting smells of home-cooked food, the sound of laughter and conversation, and the occasional barks of the dogs she lovingly took in. Irma's life can best be described as a testament to love, generosity, and thoughtfulness. Her warm heart and nurturing spirit touched the lives of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will forever be remembered and cherished by her family and friends. Irma's life was one filled with rich experiences, love, and laughter, and her memory will continue to inspire those who loved her. May Irma Margarita Chavez Moncivais rest in eternal peace, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion that will continue to inspire generations to come.
