Justino Gomez, also known as "Justin" or "Tino", passed away unexpectedly on November 21, 2023, in Los Angeles, California. Justino was born on December 27, 1969, to Buonfilio and Mercedes Gomez in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. He was the fifth of nine children. At age 5, Justino immigrated to the United States where his family settled in Hollister, California. He graduated from San Benito High School in 1988, and went on to attend the University of California at Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in History of Art. Justino lived in the Bay Area for several years, and moved to Los Angeles in 1998. He worked for several companies in Human Resources and Payroll. However, his true passion was art and riding motorcycles. Justino was a private and quiet person, but also funny and a daredevil. He will be deeply missed. Justino was predeceased by his father Buonfilio Gomez, brother Jesus (Chuy) Loza, and sister Elizabeth Gomez. He is survived by his mother Mercedes Gomez, siblings Carlos Gomez, Gustavo Gomez and wife Glynda Gomez, Mario Gomez Loza, Maria Dolores Gomez, Maria Rocio Castillo and husband Omar Castillo, Victor Gomez and wife Anietra Gomez, nephew Miguel Hernandez, and nieces Amanda Gomez, Valerie Castillo, Claudia Castillo, Leilani Perez-Gomez, Aaliyah Gomez, and Aviana Gomez.Show more

George "Funky" Brown

Los Angeles, California, and the music world mourn the loss of George Brown. He was the co-founder, drummer, and songwriter for Kool & the Gang. George Brown, lovingly nicknamed "Funky," passed away on November 16th, 2023. After fighting a battle with lung cancer at the age of 74. A representative for Kool & the Gang confirmed Brown's death, highlighting his contributions to the band's hits. Brown not only provided infectious beats but also played a crucial role in co-writing classics. Born in January 1949 in Jersey City, New Jersey, George Brown's musical journey began early in childhood. With an "internal rhythm" that became clear as he played makeshift drums with butter knives. Despite financial problems limiting lessons, Brown's love led him to become a self-taught drummer. In 1964, Brown joined forces with Robert "Kool" Bell and others to form the Jazziacs. Thus evolving into the legendary Kool & the Gang. Their breakthrough came in 1973 with the release of the album "Wild and Peaceful." Brown's drumming not only shaped the sound of his band but also left a lasting mark on popular music. Beyond his musical works, Brown candidly shared his struggles with depression and addiction to pills.
