Irene Koob, age 92, of Plainfield, IA, passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a. m. Friday September 8, 2023 at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua with Rev Todd Burrichter presiding. Interment will be in Willow Lawn Cemetery in Plainfield, Iowa. Friends may greet the family, 4:00 - 7:00 p. m. Thursday September 7, 2023 at the Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home and Crematory - Olson Chapel in Nashua. Further visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. 641-435-4134 Memorials may be directed to the family because of a flower allergy. Irene was born on March 31, 1931 on a farm in Bremer County the daughter of G. Clair Johnston and Edith (Hastings) Johnston. Her elementary education was in Bremer County at a country school and she graduated from Plainfield Community High School in 1949. Irene was united in marriage to Lloyd W Koob, on November 23, 1951 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Waverly. Irene received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Wartburg College in 1963, after many years of summer school, workshops, and correspondence. She taught at a country school, Plainfield Community School, and Nashua Community School at the elementary level. During her 35-year teaching career she influenced many students and enjoyed being in the classroom with them. Irene was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Nashua and was a past Council member, WELCA President, involved in cluster work, and helped with making quilts. Irene was Involved in the American Legion Auxiliary in the Plainfield unit, county, district, and state level. She served in many different capacities throughout the years and served 25 years as president of the Plainfield unit. Irene was a member of the Big 4 Unit of the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association. She is survived by her children. LuAnn (Steve) Tillery of Boise, Idaho; Susan Vossberg of Montezuma; Barbara (Brad) Schmidt of Waverly and Steven (Dawn) Koob of Plainfield. Grandchildren, Shannon Sands, Heather (Taylor) Ebright, Derek (Amanda) Vossberg, Trisha (Luke) Buhrow, Lindsay Schmidt, Jason (Sakai) Schmidt, Kaitlin Theilen and Devin Koob. Twelve great grandchildren. One brother Leland (Joan) Johnston of Plainfield, Iowa and sister-in-law, Sue Johnston of Texas. She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers Leonard Johnston and Lloyd Johnston, son-in-law Steve Vossberg, step grandson Josh Tillery and one great granddaughter Grace Vossberg in infancy.

Wanda Mae Sterba, age 89, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and formerly of Plainfield, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2022, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa from Renal Failure. Wanda was born on July 30, 1932, at her parent's farm in rural Fredericksburg, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Florence (Graepp) Mack. Wanda was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended school in Frederika, graduating in 1950 from the Frederika High School. On September 30, 1951, Wanda was united in marriage to Joseph "Joe" Sterba at St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika. The couple made their home on the Sterba family farm in Fredericksburg, where Wanda worked beside Joe on the farm and babysat for area families, was a CNA as a teenager and worked as a greeter for 15 years at the Waverly Walmart, retiring in 2005. Joe and Wanda later moved to Shell Rock and Joe died on May 8, 2017. In her spare time Wanda enjoyed traveling extensively to different continents overseas with Joe. Wanda also enjoyed gardening, square dancing, camping, snowmobiling, playing card (especially 500), and loved her trips to the Casino. Wanda is survived by her three sons, James (Diane) Sterba of Sumner, Iowa, Jerry Sterba of Forrest City, Iowa, Richard Sterba of Des Moines, Iowa; one daughter, Pamela Folkerts of Waverly; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elaine Bravener of Marion, Iowa, Eleanor Wettengel of Cedar Falls; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Mack of Frederika. Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Florence; her husband, Joe; and her brother, Merle Mack. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 12:00 p. m. on Tuesday, April 5, at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Public visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 5, from 10 a. m. to 12:00 p. m. Following the service there will be a light luncheon at the funeral home and then burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg. Evelyn Irene Chester, age 87, of Plainfield, Iowa, died Thursday, February 28, 2019, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly. Evelyn was born on September 21, 1931, on a farm south of Sumner, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Anna (Ganske) Nuss. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. As a child and teenager, Evelyn worked at Nuss Hatchery in Waverly, attended St. Paul's Lutheran Elementary School in Waverly, and Waverly High School graduating in 1949. From 1949 to 1951, Evelyn worked at Lutheran Mutual Insurance in Waverly. In the fall of 1951, she went to Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls, graduating in 1953. Evelyn then started her teaching career and taught Kindergarten at Sheffield Elementary (1953-1955), Washington Elementary in Charles City (1955-1956), and Plainfield Elementary (1956-1957). On June 17, 1956, Evelyn was united in marriage to George Chester at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. In 1957, Evelyn quit teaching full time to raise her family and help George farm, however, she would continue to substitute teach for the next 32 years. The couple retired in 2010. Evelyn was a member of Plainfield, Iowa, United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and Plainfield American Legion Auxiliary. Evelyn's greatest enjoyment was time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed fishing, cooking, quilting, and playing card games. Evelyn's memory is honored by: her husband, George of Plainfield, Iowa; son, Steven Chester of Aurora, Colorado; daughter, Ann (Timothy) Pross of Atlantic, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Chester of Shell Rock, Iowa; six grandchildren, Aleshia Bloker, Adam Chester, Ariel Chester, Ashley Chester, Ethan Pross, and Justin Chester; three great-grandchildren, Nevaeh, Savannah, and Grayson Bloker; and a sister, Vivian (Vince) Curro of Adelaide, Australia. She was preceded in death by: her parents; son, Kevin Chester; and two brothers, Erwin and Norman Nuss. Evelyn has been cremated and memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 11, at the United Methodist Church in Plainfield, Iowa. Burial of her cremains will follow all services and lunch at Willow Lawn Cemetery in Plainfield.
