Gander, NL

Passing Unexpectedly at his home in Gander on October 5, 2023, Ian Broderick 38. Predeceased by Grandfather and Grandmother Gregory and Philomena Broderick, Grandfather Bernard Anstey, and father Brian Broderick. Left with fond and loving memories is Ian's devoted partner and love of his life Amanda Sedge. His Grandmother Isabel Anstey, Mother Anne Broderick nee Anstey (Jerwin), brother Douglas (Judy), nephews Hunter and Gabriel and niece Angel. Amanda's parents Jim and Lynn Sedge and Amanda's sister Cathy and Brother Andrew. Also a large circle of extended family and friends. Ian was a loving son and brother. A proud uncle and devoted partner to the love of his life Amanda. Ian will be remembered for being fearless in everything he did. As a child he would try anything. I say try because a lot of the times it didn't go as he had planned. If Ian didn't come home as a child with something bruised or bleeding it wasn't a good day outdoors. Ian loved sports especially hockey and was fiercely competitive. Often one of the smallest players on the ice, but he never backed down from anyone. He was the first player in the corners digging out the puck. His sense and fearlessness took him to Yellowknife, his true home away from home. Ian loved his time spent there, building a cabin with his friends, spending days out on the lake or in his camper, On skidoo in the winter and of course sometimes in the summer too. His love for life made him stand out in a crowd always smiling and laughing his quick wit was always on display. Ian will be remembered as a kind and loving soul. As someone you could always count on when you needed him most. In lieu of flowers donations in Ian's memory may be made to a charity of your choosing. Family will be accepting friends at Stacey's Funeral Home, Gander on Tuesday, October 10th from 2:00 P. M. - 4:00 P. M. and 7:00 P. M. - 9:00 P. M. Funeral service will take place on Wednesday, October 11th at 2:00 P. M. from the Funeral Home with Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery. Stuckless, Eileen Ruby February 24, 1942 - December 5, 2023 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Eileen Ruby Stuckless at the Gander Long Care Home in Gander on December 5, 2023 at the age of 81 years. Mom was predeceased by her loving husband, Don Stuckless, parents Elijah and Myrtle Smith (nee Peddle), sister Sarah Smith, brother in law Chris Hancock, sister in law Ruby Smith and nephew Derek Smith. Mom leaves to mourn with love and fond memories, son Gerald (Jeanmarie), daughter Janice, grandsons: Randy (Alicia), Jason (Kelly), Jordan (Brittany), Matthew, Brady, great grandchildren: Hannah, Nathan, Zoey and Dominic. Sister in law Margret Hancock, brothers: Charlie (Marcie) and Harrison (Fronie), brother in law Ray. Also left to mourn, a large family of cousins and the many friends both Eileen and Don made during their many years of volunteering for the Gander Lions Club and Glenwood RCSCC 288 Ardent Sea Cadet corps in Glenwood. Mom was born and grew up in Chance Cove, Trinity Bay. At the early age of 15 years she moved to St. John's for work. Shortly after arriving in St. John's she meet the love her life, Don. Less than a year later, they married on December 9, 1958 and moved to Gander. It was there they called home and spent their 63 years together raising their family. During their years together, mom was always next to dad's side, supporting him and helping in any way she could. Mom and Dad spent many years volunteering unlimited hours of their time with the Gander Lions Club, the RCSCC Sea Cadet corps and the Gander Goodwill. They both loved working with the members, staff and kids. Their door was always open and when a cadet or former cadet would call or drop in, both mom and dad's faces would light up with smiles and excitement. Over the years our family witnessed it many times. They especially loved to hear the many success stories from past cadets and how they were doing. Mom's love didn't stop with her volunteer work and Don, she always showed her love and kindness with her family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She always had a smile and hugs for us and would help us out anyway she possibly could. She taught us in her own way how to be kind and respect one another. Let's not forget her love of animals, dogs and cats which we had over the years. When you walked in the house, it wouldn't be unusual to see mom asleep in her chair with a pet curled up on her chest. Her beautiful smile will be missed by all who knew her, except for dad, who's with her again. Our family would like to give our expression of thanks to the staff of Lakeside Homes and Gander Long Care facility for their care and compassion given Eileen during her time of need. Cremation has taken place. Family will be receiving friends at Stacey's Funeral Home, Gander on Friday December 8th, 2023 from 6:00 - 9:00 p. m. The funeral service will be held at St. Martins Anglican Cathedral, Gander on Saturday December 9th, 2023 at 11:00 a. m. officiated by Reverend Mark Kingsbury with interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery. Eric Simms

Eric Simms

Age - 89

December 5, 2023

ERIC HUBERT SIMMS - April 09, 1934 - December 02, 2023 He has gone, not from us, but, before us. Eric was born in Twillingate and died at the James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander He was predeceased by his parents Cecil and Media Simms and brother-in-law, Roy Manuel Left to share the memories of a life well lived are his wife Fannie, son Philip, daughter-in-law Laura, granddaughter, Ellie, sisters Verna (Sid) Manuel and Noreen (Toots) Manuel. He loved his many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and loads of friends. So, so many of them often commented that Eric gave the best hugs. For a very brief time Eric taught in Twillingate but an accident (not associated with any of his pupils) shortened his time in the classroom and while recuperating at the hospital in Twillingate he made friends with a dentist from Ireland who needed an assistant. Thus began his life's work as a dental technician - he made dentures! The dentist and Eric moved to Gander in 1955. The story of how he met Fannie has always remained a secret - they married in 1963 - and celebrated 60 years along with Verna and Sid who shared in the double wedding. Eric's very favourite pastime was reading but he also spent hours flying around the world on his flight simulator. He was one of the founding members of the Gander Flying Club and earned a private pilot's license. He loved music but declared that he couldn't sing a note. His 'book room' had shelves and shelves of books but there was a designed space for his tape player, his CD player and a turntable for the vinyl LPs. Sailing was another of his passions. He built a sailboat from a kit and coached Fannie into 'the mate' role as they explored Gander Lake from end to end. The Ontario boys were in their glee when Uncle Eric visited and spent time sailing with them on Lake Huron. In the late 70's he discovered a love of camping and Philip was well acquainted with his own and neighbouring provinces before he hit the double digits. He also shared with Philip a serious interest in James Bond and they had fun hashing out the spectacular scenery and action scenes. Eric found time to volunteer at his church as a member on several committees, as an AOTS member, as a Social Club member and when a sound booth was introduced he plied his knowledge of electronics as the 'man in the booth'. He enjoyed his years as a member of the Kiwanis Club. The Music Festival was the highlight of the year but he made the dinner meetings fun for everyone because his wife wasn't there to interpret the menu. Yep, if you order onion soup you'll find onions and cheese - he didn't like either. He also volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels and took time to chat with all the clients. His Christmas job was the securing and decoration of the tree. Sometimes it took 3 days to put the tinsel, strand by strand, perfectly in place. He would be so happy to know that the leftover tinsel (he had a stash) found a new home. His wicked sense of humour was one of his trademarks, whether it be placing puns as intended, choosing the word for its double meaning or teasing children, he got the biggest chuckle. One of the pre school children from Fannie's baby sitting days told her father 'Eric is funny, he pull us leg'. In all his adult years, Eric never rented an apartment or stayed in a dorm. When he moved away from Twillingate and the care of a doting mother he became a boarder - didn't have to cook, clean his room or even do his own laundry. Then he married and had to do all of those but hastened to admit that he had a good life because 'I stepped on all the right rocks'. Family will be accepting friends at Stacey's Funeral Home, Gander on Tuesday, December 12th from 2:00 P. M. - 4:00 P. M. and 7:00 P. M. to 9:00 P. M. Funeral service will take place on Wednesday, December 13th at 2:00 P. M. from the Fraser Road United Church. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations in Eric's memory may be made to Fraser Road United Church. Arrangements entrusted through Stacey's Funeral Home, Gander - Carmanville.Show more
