Lawrence Casey

Lawrence Casey

Age - 90

December 1, 2023

Larry Casey lived most of his 90 years on the San Francisco Peninsula. Larry and his younger sister Margaret were raised by parents Lawrence Sr. and Margaret on San Jose Avenue in San Francisco. He graduated from Balboa High School in 1951. Larry showed some talent for art at a young age and in high school he was offered a role helping an Italian priest who was completing art projects for local churches. His art focused on della robbia, a style of sculpture. There are not many remaining examples of his sculpting or painting, His love for art carried throughout his life. He was a chronic doodler, with a notebook and erasable pen tucked in the pocket of his Ben Davis shirt. A post-high school highlight for Larry was taking Arthur Murray ballroom dancing classes. His sister, Margaret says he loved to dance. Other than vacations to Europe and around the United States throughout his life, his main time away from home was two years in the U. S. Army in the early 1950's. After his boot camp at Fort Ord, he was assigned to an Army Recon unit in the US Sixth Army, based in Austria. Much later Larry recounted his first patrol along the Soviet-Austrian border. The Russians started shooting at them, so he fired back. His platoon sergeant told him later that the Russians would do that when they saw new faces on patrol to test their grit, and that he had 'passed the test'. After two years in the Army he re-joined his father's electrical contracting company as a union electrician in Local 6. As a life-long electrician Larry worked on many jobs in San Francisco throughout four decades in IBEW Local 6. Besides working in many well-known high-rises. Notable electrician efforts include working on BART and changing the lights at the top of the Candlestick Park light towers. Larry met Lucille at a Young Ladies Institute dinner-dance in Burlingame in 1956. Larry and Lucille married at St. Mary's Church in Jersey City, NJ on October 19, 1957. They welcomed Michael, the first of seven children, in September,1959 and bought a house a month later on Forest View Drive in South San Francisco, not 5 miles as the crow flies from his boyhood home. All seven children - 5 boys and 2 girls - were raised there and received the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation at Mater Dolorosa(MD) Church. Larry and Lucille taught catechism at MD for several years. Larry led a large group of neighborhood boys as the founding Scoutmaster of Troop #294, based at Sunshine Gardens School. The troop was widely known for being fun and adventurous. Larry led the boys on many hikes, backpacking trips and environmental projects. Leading Troop #294 included Saturdays doing newspaper drives or planting trees on Sign Hill or hiking on San Bruno Mountain. Larry was masterful in adding to the adventure as the Scouts got to fly in a Coast Guard helicopter, drive a train, and train with the Army Reserve. His own Scout training kicked in one day as he walked his children to Grand Avenue Library one Saturday morning to come across a house on fire. Larry got all the children out of the burning home, then helped the firemen get their hoses connected - a life saving act right in front of his own children! Just after the U. S. Bicentennial celebration in the late 1970's Larry took the family on a summer car trip across the country with the goal to attend the 50th Wedding Anniversary of Lucille's parents in New Jersey. Nine people traveling in a van for weeks through thunderstorms, traffic tickets and impromptu stops to camp for the night made for an interesting trip indeed! Larry had a few things he was very interested in. Most notable was a life-long love of trains - big trains, steam trains, model trains, you name it. He was in several model railroading clubs and made many treks to see some of the unique trains in North America and Europe. He usually had a model railroad magazine close by. He also enjoyed running the train at the Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco during the Christmas season. For several years in the late 1970's he ran a hobby shop with his friend Nate at the top-of-the-hill in Daly City and he formed a model rocketry club for local kids out of that shop. Larry and Lucille have 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. "Poppy" as he was known by the grandchildren was big on making gifts such as custom music boxes, and 'Princess' railroad cars. He also famously gave each of his seven children one dollar for each year on their birthday - same for the grandchildren. This could be an envelope of ones, or given in a more special way such as a small pirates chest with gold one dollar coins. Poppy was known for trying to be funny all the time with endlessly long handshakes, corny jokes and puns. In his later years, Poppy was always helpful to anyone in the family running an errand or transporting one of his kids or grandkids. He and Lucille were part of a church group of friends who were well-known at Gunther's for breakfast. I'm sure the staff at Heidi's Pies in San Mateo also mourns his passing since he was quite a regular there. He will be missed. Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 at 10:30AM at Mater Dolorosa Church. Larry's will be laid to rest privately by family at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.Show more

Thomas O'Rourke

Thomas O'Rourke

Age - 84

Thomas Frank O'RourkeMay 6, 1939 - November 10, 2023"Tom" O'Rourke, 84, of Ashland, Oregon, passed away on November 10th, 2023, while at home surrounded by family. Tom was born in San Francisco, California to Edward Thomas O'Rourke and Catherine Francis O'Rourke (Leone) on May 6th, 1939. When Tom was 3 the family relocated to San Jose, California where Tom grew up. As a young man Tom attended St. Joseph's Seminary from 1952 to 1957 where he developed an appreciation for both spiritual and intellectual pursuits. Tom decided to extend that appreciation to a higher education in engineering, bringing the seminary chapter of his life to a close. Tom remained committed to his church serving as a lector and in various other roles with each parish throughout his life. Tom matriculated to Santa Clara University very well versed in the classics and liberal arts, but lacking in the mathematics and sciences his goal would require. Through his tenacity and focus he filled in those gaps in 3-1/2 years and earned his Electrical Engineering (EE) degree from SCU in 1961. During his time at SCU he began courting his sister Nancy's best friend Karen Brewer, and after settling in at IBM directly after graduation they married in August of 1961. It was a busy year!In the five years that followed Tom and Karen had three children while Tom earned a Master's in EE in 1965. He subsequently earned his Master's in Business in 1972 while he advanced into a management role at IBM. There he led technical teams in the US and Europe, including a team that helped develop the universal product code (UPC) that since 1974 is the barcode that has appeared on billions of products worldwide. In 1982 following a rewarding 21 years at IBM, an exciting opportunity arose to lead the data storage products division at Amdahl Corporation. There he spent the remainder of his career as the vice president of that division, making over 50 trips to Japan, developing an appreciation for Japanese culture and cuisine while building the business relationships and technologies Amdahl needed. He cherished those experiences well into his retirement. Beyond the European travel for IBM and the trips to Japan for Amdahl, Tom and Karen enjoyed traveling the globe visiting many countries over the years. With the kids they spent countless days escaping to cabins in the woods, camping in state and national parks, lounging on the beaches of Hawai'i, and driving the open road exploring the beautiful western United States. These travels were enormously joyful times for the entire family. Sometimes the road trips led through southern Oregon to visit Karen's sister Susie, and over the years Tom fell in love with the area. When it came time to retire from Silicon Valley in 1991 Tom and Karen relocated to a small farm outside Ashland. Karen's parents relocated to Ashland about the same time, and although Tom's children had lives of their own elsewhere on the west coast, by 1996 all three had relocated to Ashland as well. As spouses and grandchildren joined the family the chaos grew along with it. With love in his heart and a glint in his eyes, Tom's go-to greeting to many a guest at family get-togethers became "Welcome to the Zoo". A lifelong appreciation of the arts inspired Tom to actively support many music organizations in Southern Oregon, both as a patron and through his participation on the boards of the Rogue Valley Symphony and Chamber Music Concerts. He was passionate about these organizations and was committed to supporting their works. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Karen O'Rourke, son Tim (Teri) O'Rourke, son Daniel O'Rourke, and daughter Cindy Parks-Landis (Bill Landis), all of Ashland, Oregon. Also surviving him are his grandson Nick O'Rourke of Medford, Oregon, granddaughters Sarah and Rachel Parks of Portsmouth, Virginia, and brother Terry O'Rourke of Ann Arbor, Michigan. A Rosary Service will be held at 10:30am on December 15th, 2023, at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, 987 Hillview Dr. , Ashland Oregon. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11am with Father Brent Crowe presiding. A Remembrance Celebration will follow the mass. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any memorial donations you might consider be made to the educational, religious, or arts organization closest to your heart.Show more

Jon Bugatto

Jon Bugatto

Age - 47

November 27, 2023

We are saddened to announce the peaceful passing of Jon on November 19th after a short illness with an aggressive cancer, dedifferentiated liposarcoma, which he fought bravely without ever a complaint despite numerous complications. Jon attended St. Vincent de Paul grammar school and Sacred Heart Cathedral High School where he made many great friends. He always fondly remembered participating in the basketball and baseball games that returned the Bruce-Mahoney trophy back to SHC after many years absence. Jon received numerous baseball scholarship offers and was scouted by professional teams during his high school career as a pitcher. His promising baseball career was ultimately shortened by shoulder injuries. Jon eventually graduated from UC San Diego with a degree in history and plans to attend law school. During his fourth year of college, though, he was acutely affected by schizoaffective disorder which was severe and disabling and with which he struggled for many years. With courage and determination, he was ultimately able to overcome the depths of that illness to have a successful career working for local non-profit safety net programs in San Francisco. He received numerous promotions. Jon taught us all to never give up on one with a serious mental illness. Jon greatly enjoyed family dinners and gatherings in addition to always following local sports especially the SF Giants and 49ers. He had a big heart with a calm nature, kindness, and care and concern for others. He will be deeply missed. Jon was predeceased by his father B. John "Ben" and is survived by his mother Maria, siblings Barry (Lorrie), Annette (Rick), and Robert. He is dearly missed by his nephews and niece Anthony, Bettina and Ricky. He also leaves numerous cousins on both the Bugatto and DeMartini sides of the family. Donations preferred to Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, Sarcoma Foundation of America, or the charity of your choice. Private services have been held.Show more
