Hermelinda "Melis" DeLaTorre, 56, of Pampa, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023, in Pampa. Services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 29, 2023, in the Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Pastor Jose Luis Cervantes, pastor of Pena de Restauracion, officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory. Melis was born on April 13, 1967, in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Mario and Ramona Portillo. In 1983, she married the love of her life, Gerardo DeLaTorre. The couple moved to Pampa in 1984 and have been in the community ever since. Together Melis and Gerardo owned and operated the Hickory Hut for many years. Outside of work, Melis loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandkids. She enjoyed dancing and listening to music as well. Melis had the most beautiful smile, and she will be missed by so many. Melis is preceded in death by her parents, Mario and Ramona Portillo; a sister, Ramona Portillo; brothers Isidro Portillo and David Portillo; and a niece, Dora Portillo. She is survived by her husband, Gerardo DeLaTorre; two daughters, Araceli Mejia and husband Juan, and Viviana DeLaTorre; son, Gerardo DeLaTorre, Jr. and wife Jessica; grandchildren, Johnny, Israel, Issac, Nahum, Yelin, Austyn, Ryder, and Lexy; great-grandson, Ayden; sister, Patricia Cabrales; two brothers, Felipe Portillo and Ernesto Portillo; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members. Melvin "Mel" C. Richey, 83, of Pampa, passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2023, in Pampa. Services will be at 2:00 PM Monday, December 11, 2023, at the Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Pastor Johnny Widener, pastor of Bible Baptist Church in Dumas and Mel’s nephew, officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 4:00 PM on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at the funeral home. Mel was born on September 15, 1940, in Dumas to Melvin F. and Mable Perkins Richey. He grew up and attended school in the Texas panhandle. On November 27, 1963, Mel married the love of his life, Peggy Drake, in Guymon, Oklahoma, and the two just recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Mel and Peggy moved to Pampa in 1979 where he worked as a maintenance supervisor for Phillips Petroleum Co. He was with Phillips for 32 years until his retirement. Mel and Peggy moved to Amarillo for a few years, but recently moved back to Pampa to be closer to family. During retirement, Mel stayed very busy with several of his hobbies. He had a passion for pastel painting, painting portraits, and was a master wood worker. Anything that he set his mind to, he could accomplish. He was a member of the Amarillo Pastel Society, and his works were recognized by many. One of his paintings was chosen to hang in the gallery of the Governor’s office in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Another of his works was chosen to be on permanent display in a gallery in Raton, New Mexico. Besides painting, Mel enjoyed fishing when he got the chance. His greatest joy was being Papa to 7 grandsons and 7 great-grandchildren. Mel loved to spend every minute he could with his family, and he would do anything for them. He went on many trips to the family cabin in New Mexico and enjoyed having all his family together. Mel was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather, and he will be missed by so many. Mel is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Hardy Richey; and father and mother-in-law, Doss and Olivean Drake. Eric Shipman, 53, of Pampa, passed away on December 4, 2023, at home in Pampa. Celebration of life services will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, December 9, 2023, at the Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Rev. Michael Erickson of the Zion Lutheran Church, officiating. A burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory. The family will receive friends from 6:00 -7:30 PM on Friday at the funeral home. Eric will be available for viewing from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Thursday and 8:00 AM- 8:00 PM on Friday. Eric was born on April 6, 1970, in Amarillo to Lane and Donna Shipman. As a young boy his family moved to Pampa where he grew up, attended, and graduated school. After high school, Eric joined the workforce. He entered the oil and gas industry, serving at a few different drilling outfits. Eventually, Eric began his long career in the automotive industry. First, he started with Eagle Radiator and then onto Utility Tire, a long-time mechanic position covering 17 years before his passing. In his spare time, Eric found much enjoyment being outdoors fishing and camping whenever he could. He also took great pleasure and pride in cooking, grilling, and hosting people. He was a hard-working man who was calm, relaxed, and giving person who often put others before himself. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; maternal grandparents, James and Angie Freeman; and his paternal grandparents, James and Katie Shipman. Rocky Lucas, 75, of Pampa, formerly of Ransom Canyon passed away on December 2, 2023 at his home in Pampa. Memorial services will be 2:00 PM, Friday, December 8, 2023 at First Baptist Church in Pampa with Rev. Byron Williamson, pastor, officiating. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory. Rocky was born May 17, 1948 in Canadian, TX to Chester and Ernestine Lucas. He graduated from Canadian High School in 1966. After high school, he went on to Texas Tech University and earned his bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. On June 10, 1967, he married Carolyn Perkins in Matador, TX. They celebrated their 56 years of marriage. Rocky and Carolyn lived most of their lives in Pampa and Ransom Canyon. While in Pampa, Rocky was a member of the First Baptist Church. Rocky worked for Purina Mills as a salesman for over 32 years. He retired in 2009. He was a member of the Pampa Lions Club, involved with the Boys Scouts of America, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Rocky was an avid sports fan, especially the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Texas Rangers, and Kansas City Chiefs. He enjoyed camping, golfing, and anything his kids or grandkids were involved in. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; daughter, Krista Hughes, and husband Tony; two sons, Scott Lucas and wife Lyndsay and Justin Lucas and wife Kristina; grandchildren; Kamryn Lucas, Casen Lucas, Isabella Brockway, Aaron Brockway, Seine Basta, and Libertie Basta. Susan Elaine Nelson, 77, of Pampa, passed away on November 26, 2023, in Pampa. Graveside services will be 2:00 PM, Friday, December 1, 2023, at Fairview Cemetery with Pastor Ben Corbitt of Faith Tabernacle UPC, officiating, and close friend, John Tripplehorn, eulogizing her service. Susan will be available for viewing from 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM on Wednesday and 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Thursday. Susan Elaine Nelson was born August 13, 1946, in Compton, CA to Red and Helen Nelson, and she passed away November 26, 2023, at the age of 77. What is normally a sad occasion is a joyous one in this case, as she is now with her Creator and free of suffering. Susan grew up in Pampa with dear friends, many of whom she remained close to throughout her life. She graduated from Pampa High School in the class of 1964 and attended Texas Tech. Susan was happily married to Don King of Bowie, Texas for many years. Tragically, Susan was in an automobile accident in the early 70’s and suffered a traumatic brain injury. She lived for 25 or more years at Tangren Rehabilitation Facility in San Marcos before moving to Pampa Nursing Home in 2013, where she passed. She is remembered for her love of animals, most particularly horses and cats, her fun-loving nature and sense of adventure, her extreme loyalty, and indeed, a slight streak of orneriness. She was dearly loved and will be missed. She was preceded in death by her parents. Susan is survived by a sister, Cathy Mathis of Ball Ground, GA; a niece, Laura Aubrey of Olathe, KS; several great nieces and nephews; and good friends, John and Susan Tripplehorn of Pampa. Helen Loraine Barnett, 74, of Pampa, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. Graveside services will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Memory Gardens Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Jerry Lane, retired minister, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory. Helen was born on April 9, 1949, in Long Beach, California, to Freddie Wilson and Rachel Ray Betchan. She grew up in Pampa and graduated from Pampa High School in 1967. Helen married the love of her life, Eddie Barnett, on July 20, 1967, and the two were married for over 56 years. For over 40 years, Helen was a cook and waitress at the Coney Island Café. She also worked at Southwestern Bell and Armstrong Coffee Service for some time. Helen attended cosmetology school in her young adult life as well. Helen and Eddie were blessed with two wonderful daughters. Helen was actively involved in the activities of the girls. She was a committed band mom while the girls were in the Pride of Pampa marching band, and she was the official GameDay hair braider for all the girls in the color guard. Helen was also a Girl Scout assistant leader. Most importantly, she raised the girls to follow in her faith and to love the Lord as she did. Helen loved being with her family and friends on road trips, family reunions, and lake and mountain time. She enjoyed outdoor activities such as riding motorcycles, water skiing, camping, and fishing. Helen also loved to garden her flowers and take care of her koi pond. She was a faithful member of the First Christian Church. She served as a deacon and was a Sunday School superintendent for over 10 years. Dear to Helen was raising her girls and enjoying the blessings of her 5 grandsons. Helen is preceded in death by her parents, Freddie Betchan, Sr. and Rachel Bailey; her stepfather, Levi "Pop" Charles Bailey, Jr. ; grandchild, Charley Bural; brother, Freddie Betchan, Jr. ; and sister, Joyce Hadley. Dorothy D. Barrett, 91, of Pampa, passed away on Monday, November 13, 2023 in Pampa. Memorial services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, November 16, 2023 at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Rev. Byron Williamson, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. A private burial will be in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory. Dorothy was born July 25, 1932 in Toledo, Ohio to Bill and Helen Dixon. Her family moved to Pampa in 1933 and she graduated from Pampa High School in 1950. After high school, she attended nursing school in Oklahoma City and graduated in 1953. On December 16, 1950, she married Raymond Barrett in Pampa. They celebrated 70 years of marriage before he passed away in 2020. Dorothy was a nurse and worked for several entities including working as a school nurse. After she retired, she volunteered for Crisis Pregnancy Center, which later became Pregnancy Support Center & Hope. It was dear to her heart, as she spent many years doing sonograms. Dorothy was a longtime faithful member at First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She also was involved and enjoyed doing Prison Ministry. Her hobbies included reading and doing Bible studies. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Margery Salmon; brother, William "Bill" Dixon; her daughter, Leigh Barrett Anderson; and a grandson, Jarod Allen Barrett. Billy Jess Willis, 88, of Pampa, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2023 in Pampa. Services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at Central Baptist Church with Rev. Norman Rushing, pastor, and Rev. Rick Parnell, retired minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory. Bill was born August 1, 1935 to Dewey and Cora Nowlin Willis in Big Springs, Texas. They moved often due to Dewey’s work in the oilfield. They arrived in Pampa in 1952. Bill graduated from Pampa High School in 1953 and attended Hardin Simmons University and West Texas A&M. Bill worked for Magnolia Oil (later Mobil Oil) for 5 years and then Cabot Corporation – Machinery Division for 23 years. At that time, he opened a machine shop, CTW Brake Rims, and manufactured brake rims for drilling rigs. He continued there for 28 years until retirement. Bill loved metal working and built a lot of equipment for his shop. He always had a workshop at home and could be found there most of the time. Bill met Leona Attaway at Woolworth, where they both worked during high school. They were married on July 6, 1956 and had been married for 67 years. He belonged to Central Baptist Church from the time he came to Pampa and taught Sunday School for over 40 years and served as a Deacon. Bill served in the Army for 6 years between the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, first at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, and then in the National Guard at Pampa. He was at Fort Chaffee when Elvis Presley was inducted, there was quite a commotion over that, but Elvis didn’t remain there. He was a Master Mason and received a 50 year award. Bill enjoyed going to the lake and had numerous camper trailers and motor homes and enjoyed water skiing and fishing. In later years, he took the five grandchildren on a week’s vacation every summer. Bill also helped keep grandkids every Saturday night, when they were young, to give their parents a break. He was known as Pawpaw to grands and great-grands. Bill loved the old western movies and was teased often about his "black and white" movies. After retirement, he entertained himself by mowing with his zero-turn mower and John Deere tractor. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Taylor; and a nephew, Scott Taylor. Survivors include his wife, Leona; daughter, Melissa Willis Cantrell and husband Mike; son, Lynn Willis and wife Becky; five grandchildren, Aaron Willis and wife Amanda, Ashley Willis Allen, Bethany Nichols and husband Shane, Rhiannon Newsom and husband Tate, and Cassidy Casados and husband Jordan; 12 great grandchildren; and a niece, Cynthia Taylor. Clarice L Mills, 92, of Pampa, passed away on Friday, November 10, 2023 in Pampa. Services will be at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at the Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Rev. Byron Williamson, pastor at First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will take place at 2:00 PM on Friday, November 17, 2023 at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Plainville, Kansas with Rev. Todd Bohrer, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory. Clarice was born on March 13, 1931 in Stratton, Colorado to Clarence Leroy Bush and Edna Evelyn Reese Bush Kern. She married Bill Mills on April 8, 1974. Clarice moved to Pampa in 2008 to be closer to her family. In Clarice’s younger years, she was an avid bowler and was very active in her church. She was a lifelong Baptist. Clarice served as church treasurer for several years. She also served on many food committees and helped plan for many church events. As Clarice got older her favorite past time became watching TV. She loved to watch Tiger Woods play golf. Clarice lived through many hardships and always persevered. She will be remembered as a strong, independent woman. Clarice’s family would like to extend special thanks to the Meredith Court staff and Interim Hospice staff for their loving care. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Mills; her father, Clarence Leroy Bush; her mother and stepfather, Edna Evelyn Kern and Norbert Kern; three siblings, Fern Desair, Henry Kern, and Robert Kern; daughter, Pat Daniels; son, Mike Thompson; and stepson, Mike Mills.
