Herman Banks, a beloved member of the Cambridge community was born on March 1, 1940 in Mcdonough, Georgia to the late Albert Banks and the late Nelly (Wyatt) Banks. Herman spent his formative years in Cambridge, MA and was a graduate of the Houghton School and Cambridge High and Latin School. He became a member of the Union Baptist church as a child and as an adult served on the trustee board. After graduating Herman went on to join the United States Air Force. With his military service behind him, Herman returned to the city of Cambridge, where he dedicated his career to the betterment of the community. He initially joined the city's workforce as an accountant at Cambridge City hospital, and his passion for financial management eventually led him to the auditing department at the hospital, where he continued to excel. In 1974, Herman Banks embarked on a new path when he decided to become a Cambridge police officer. Until his retirement in 1995, he served the city, demonstrating dedication and courage throughout his time on the force. One of Herman's most cherished connections was with the neighborhood where he grew up, known as "The Coast. " His roots in this close-knit community ran deep, and he was a familiar face to everyone who lived there. In return, "The Coast" held a special place in his heart. Herman was not just known; he was loved and respected by all who crossed his path. His warm smile, his sense of humor, and his willingness to lend a helping hand endeared him to countless individuals in Cambridge and beyond. Herman was preceded in death by his father Albert and his mother Nelly. He is survived by his wife LaVerne Wyche-Banks and their children Chandra Banks, Herman Banks, Jr. and his wife Robyn. His eldest daughter Tonya Banks, eldest son Damon Banks, his wife Samantha and their mother Inez Salesman; his grandchildren Isaiah, Shanice, Craig, Indira, Kamaria, Dezarae, Amaya, Solei and Cash; three siblings James Banks, Mildred Mckenzie, Cordelia Banks and nieces and nephews. He leaves behind a community that will forever be grateful for his contributions, and he will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
