Herbert Carton Canapary of Laytonsville, MD died on Saturday, September 2, 2023. He was surrounded by loved ones as he left for his heavenly home. Herb was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 1,1932 to Alice (Brennan) and Edward Canapary. He graduated from Brooklyn Preparatory in 1950 and Manhattan College in 1954 with a BA in Finance. He went on to earn his MS degree in Finance at Columbia University in 1957. Growing up in tightly knit "Brownstone Brooklyn", in what he described as, "A great place to live during a wonderful time to be alive", he resided amongst supportive relatives and an abundance of friends. This set the foundation on which he would develop an intense loyalty and devotion to all who were dear to him. These traits proved to be unwavering throughout his life, as demonstrated by his generosity, support of neighbors in need, and his regular "telephone check-ins" with family and friends. It was in a Brooklyn church dance hall where Herb would meet his future wife, an Irish beauty named Mary Dolan who shared similar values and life perspectives. They would eventually have 4 children together and move from New York to Connecticut before settling in Maryland. Together with Mary, Herb became involved in the establishment of the Lord's Table Soup Kitchen at St. Martin's Church in Gaithersburg where he was a steadfast supporter and regular volunteer--providing financial consultation and support, washing dishes, and even playing the role of Santa Claus-- throughout its 40+ year existence. It was at St. Martin's where he would dedicate his time to teaching religious education to special needs children and serving as a mentor to the Youth Group. Herb had an affable personality, loved a good (or not-so-good) joke, sang loudly--especially Irish ballads, and delighted in playing host. The Canapary backyard became a central meeting place where all were welcome to enjoy a swim in the pool, a barbeque, a charred hamburger, a poetry reading session, or even a wedding. Herb served as Vice President and Treasurer at Manhattan Life Insurance Company in New York for 23 years and Vice President of Investments at Union Labor Life Insurance for 22 years. During his esteemed career, he was lauded for his intelligence, ethics, fairness, and innovative approaches to novel problems. Retirement afforded him opportunities to travel throughout the United States--from Alaska to Bethany Beach to New York and beyond-- as well as to England and Ireland to visit family. He dedicated more time to cultivating stunning backyard topiaries and flower gardens. When travel was deemed impossible by the pandemic, he focused on his "poetry". Through observational writing--sometimes irreverent, oftentimes humorous--he would convey the commendable attributes of people he had admired throughout his life, be it his identical twin brother Edward with whom he shared a 72-year bond, his cherished wife of 62 years, or the pleasant Safeway cashier who always greeted him with a smile. Herb is survived by his devoted wife Mary Dolan and their children: Patrick Canapary, Ellen Canapary (Pat Quigley), Ann Canapary, Jennifer Henriksen (Scott); three grandchildren: Emily Henriksen, Ryan Henriksen, and Mary Xuyen Canapary; cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Alice and Edith and brother Edward Canapary. Francisco Arias, 58, passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023, at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle against cancer. Francisco was born in October 1965 in El Salvador. He was the son of the late Jose Maria Arias and Maria Argelia Lara, and brother of the late Joseph Arias, Marta Marina Arias-Mendoza, Tomas Arias (Tito), and Roberto Antonio Arias. Francisco is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Ana Leila Arias, his four daughters, Vanessa Arias, Daniela Guerrero Arias, Amanda Lewis and Glendi Valenciabonilla, four grandchildren, his brother, Dario Arias, his sisters, Haydee Escobar, Gloria Arias, Milagro Lemus, Estebana Arias (Teba), Mery Arias, Kela Arias, Aleyda Perez and Carmen Arias. Joanne Theresa Sands went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on November 8, 2023 with her loving husband (Thomas) of 48 years and her precious daughter (Melissa Anne Smith) by her side. Surviving relatives include her son-in-law (Brian Smith) and her three angels, grandson (Matthew Brian Smith) and granddaughters (Gabrielle Anne Smith and Danielle Theresa Smith); Joanne's brother (James Dudek) and her sister-in-law (Kathy Dudek); brother-in-law (Richard Sands) and sister-in-law (Mary Sands); and numerous nieces and nephews. Joanne was preceded in death by her loving sister-in-law (Geraldine Fleckenstein) and brother-in-law (John Fleckenstein). Joanne was born April 13, 1955 to James and Theresa Dudek in Baltimore, Maryland. She was a graduate of The Catholic High School and The College of Notre Dame. After graduating with a BS in accounting, she worked at Arthur F. Bell, Jr. and Associates as a manager, taking on large international tax cases. Prior to completing her education, she stayed home to raise her daughter and gave her time as a catechist and vacation bible school instructor at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Fallston, Girl Scout Troop leader, and school volunteer at Youth's Benefit Elementary and Fallston Middle School. In addition, she traveled to and attended all of Melissa's sporting events, supporting her as one of her biggest fans, along with Tom. Joanne's life was centered around her grandchildren and her Catholic faith. Joanne loved to crochet, needlepoint, garden, walk, read, and to make sure that every holiday and birthday was a special occasion for her family. She cooked delicious meals for every occasion and baked the most wonderful Christmas cookies, cakes, and pies. When she found out that she was going to be a grandmother, she was so elated that her and Tom moved to Olney to be with her grandchildren. While Melissa and Brian went to the office for work, she walked every morning to their house to care for the children and filled every day with hugs, love, and laughter. Her work didn't stop with the daily care of the children, she enjoyed every holiday event with them like trick-or-treat, breakfast with Santa, and Easter egg hunts as well as trips to the library or to run errands, just to name a few. Friends and relatives are invited to celebrate Joanne's life at Saint Peter's Catholic Church in Olney, MD on November 16, 2023. Today is November 10th, 2023, and it has taken this long to write an obituary for my beloved husband, friend and soulmate because I have been in shock and pain more profound than even I, a glass-half-full optimist, could have predicted. And today I can laugh at what I know Gene would say about this: "Welp, babe, you are a day late and a dollar short. " Gene fell asleep on Tuesday evening, October 25th, and didn't wake to see Wednesday. He is gone now but what his life stood for and the many memories his loving family and friends have will be our comfort. First of all, Gene wasn't always Gene--he decided when he was about seven or so that he didn't like this name, too sissy he always claimed, and so he opted to be called Stanley or Stan; and he insisted to all of his teachers and family members that this would be the only name to which he'd answer. But then when he was about 25 or so, he decided differently--that it was simply silly to insist on being called Stanley when his first name was Eugene and hence moniker transformation to Gene, which he liked far better than Eugene. Gene grew up in a rough-and-tumble way, in a very rundown Southeast neighborhood in Washington, DC, and in a house he always said was like the one described by Toni Morrison in her novel Sula. Until, that is, he made the decision that would put him on the road to the many successes he would have as an adult--he phoned his Dad, told him he had to move in with him, and always said he didn't ever consider that his father would say no. And to his credit, he didn't turn his son down. From this safer environment he would launch--first to play football at Armstrong High School as the co-captain of this powerhouse team (which co-captain honor he shared with his good friend, Willie Wood, who would later go on to play professional football and then to coach for a time with the Chargers), to be elected the President of his Senior class, and then to go on to Michigan State on a full football scholarship. When he was injured, he lost his scholarship, came home and in his own inimitable fashion, decided what would be the next chapter of his life: he found his way to a recruiting office thinking he'd just join the Air Force, but as was the way of things for Gene, it turned out that he possessed an invaluable skill: he had tremendous foreign language facility, and specifically, of all languages, Russian. On he went to Syracuse University, both to learn Russian and to play football again. Then he joined a special unit in the Defense Department, made up of all black guys, all of them like Gene, skilled at Russian, and one more unusual talent, they each had to play at least one instrument. Our government would place this unusual cadre of black men in positions all over Europe, primarily in northern Europe--Gene was sent to northern Germany, and there to become a "listening post" fellow who frequented the favorite bars, nightclubs and social gathering places for Russian military personnel. Because? Our country knew that the USSR was at least as racist as our own country was, and this meant the Russians wouldn't be judicious in their conversations, particularly as they drank more vodka of an evening. After five long years, during which time he could not return to the states, he came home, cast about for what would be next and decided he needed to go back to school. And which he did with a vengeance--he chose the University of Maryland and University College together, and acquired the rest of his bachelor's degree, then jumped right in for a master's degree, all the while working for a foreign language publishing house as their translation editor and teaching as a graduate teaching assistant. But he didn't stop there: he then went on for the final degree, the PhD, again all the while working in publishing and teaching undergraduates. And now, at the end of his life, he was still teaching, at the University of Maryland, this time online because he had some mobility issues that made being in a brick-and-mortar classroom a bridge too far. He loved teaching; he loved his students; and he loved young people, saying always that they were our future and maybe, just maybe, they'd figure out how to straighten out this mess they were inheriting from their elders. He leaves to smile and remember, his wife, Carroll, who'd first met him as a student; his children, Egan, Gina and Gene Jr. ; his stepsons, John and Ryan, their significant others, Tracy, Cindy and Heidi; his grandchildren, Katherine and Morgan; Calliope; Delaney; and Griffin; brother- and sister-in-law, Bill and Debby; 10, yep, 10 half-siblings; and more friends and colleagues than one could count. His was a life well-lived and now he has gone to that which he always said was "a better place. " Gene was cremated; he did not want the standard funeral but insisted always that he wanted a raucous and cheeky Irish wake (his wife has some Irish roots) and for people to celebrate life and remember that it is short and should be lived with joy. (Which phrase interestingly, he insisted be added to the family checking account checks in the "comments" space. ) The family would like to thank the Barber Funeral Home family in Laytonsville, MD for honoring all of Gene's wishes and for their kindness in doing so.Show more

Catharine Beth Gosney Clifton January 1, 1947 - November 1, 2023 Catharine Beth Gosney Clifton passed from life to everlasting life on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 following a battle with cancer that started earlier in the year. Born January 1, 1947 in Grant's Lick, Kentucky, the only child to Jesse and Ava Gosney, Beth grew up in a loving community full of extended family. Beth often commented that she had a unique childhood - due to the fact her parents were much older and had physical disabilities - but loved her rural upbringing. Even as a child, Beth enjoyed reading and walking in the woods. Raised in a Christian home, Beth's faith was nurtured from a young age and church activities were a prominent fixture her entire life, a foundation that would serve her well as an eventual pastor's wife. Beth met her husband Gayle in high school, but their romance started after high school graduation, through letters written back and forth while Gayle served in the Air Force. They were married in June 1967. They lived in North Carolina, Kentucky and Pennsylvania before settling in Montgomery County Maryland in 1979. Beth's attention to detail and strong administrative skills served her well throughout her working life - from being the secretary to the president of Cumberland College (now University of the Cumberlands) in her early married years - to office manager of Garden Gate Landscaping, Inc, in Silver Spring. Beth was able to capitalize on her love of learning and on-the-job training in accounting, earning college credit for her years of service and graduating with a BS in Management Studies and a concentration in Behavioral Sciences in 1998, from University of Maryland University College (now UM Global Campus). Beth's love of writing and solid editing skills were put to good use in her work with the Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware, writing a monthly column for BaptistLife and serving as managing editor of the state's denominational paper. Beth spent her last years of full-time work in accounting at several area assisted living facilities. Even after retirement, Beth kept herself busy with part-time accounting work, most recently providing administrative & accounting support at Christ Community Church of Ashton. Beth loved playing the piano and singing. She directed church choirs at Olney Baptist Church and Upper Seneca Baptist Church and served as interim Music Director several times during her husband's pastorate. Beth was ordained as a deacon at Christ Community Church of Ashton. Beth was also an avid reader and enjoyed a good murder mystery. She was always reading at least three different books and was a nearly weekly patron of Montgomery County's Public Libraries. She leaves behind a family that loved her dearly (and that she dearly loved): husband, Pastor Gayle Clifton, and their daughter, Kristin, and son, Joel, and many friends and extended family who will miss her greatly. A funeral service will be held at Christ Community Church of Ashton on Saturday, November 11, at 11am. Visitation at the church is Friday, Nov 10 from 7pm to 9pm. Charlotte Burton Carr, 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 28, 2023. Born June 30, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Minnie Burton. Charlotte is predeceased by her husband of 53 years, James (Artie) Carr, Sr. who passed away November 8, 2010. She is also predeceased by 3 half-sisters, 8 brothers and 2 sisters. She is survived by her children: Jamie of Brinklow, MD, Bill of Monrovia, MD, Louise (John) of Damascus, MD and John of Brinklow, MD; her grandchildren: Bill, Jr (Kasey), Brian, Christina, Johnny (Nikki), Paul, Katharine, Amber and Brooke; 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Charlotte was a 1950 graduate of Montgomery Blair High School. After graduation she began working at the Naval Research Lab in White Oak, MD. In 1957 Charlotte and Artie married and began their family. Charlotte was a stay-at-home mom until her children began school when she began working for Artie at his appliance company. Charlotte continued working as a payroll clerk with her last job working for Wilcoxon where she worked until 2018 when she retired the day before her 86th birthday. She was a dedicated member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Brookeville, MD. She began attending St. Lukes when her and Artie moved to their home in Brinklow in the late 1950's and continued attending until recently due to health reasons. Over the years she served on the Altar Guild, Sunday School, Vestry and helped at the church's annual bazaar. Charlotte was well connected she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. In her spare time, she also loved quilting, jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, word searches and reading. In loving memory of Paula Serpas De Ruiz, age 87, who went home to the Lord on September 18, 2023. Paula was the living wife of Antonio Ruiz. She is survived by her 9 children: Alfredo Serpas, Nelson Serpas, Julia Ayala, Antonio Serpas, Virginia Serpas, Jose Serpas, Tomas Serpas, Reynaldo Romero, and Reyna Romero. She also leaves behind 29 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Paula was born in Jucuapa, El Salvador, on September 17, 1936. She immigrated to the US in 1978 to provide a better life for her children. Throughout her life she had faced many challenges and difficulties, but she remained strong, determined, and stayed true to her faith. She was loved by so many and respected by everyone she encountered. She will be remembered by her family as a God loving woman who poured her love and soul into her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
