Helene Hughes Shay, 90, of West Hartford, beloved wife for 67 years of the late Robert J. Shay, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, August 21, 2023. Born in Waterbury, on December 1, 1932, the daughter of the late Charles K. and Helene (McGrail) Hughes and fourth of fifteen children. Helene was raised in Waterbury and was a 1950 graduate of Lewis High School in Southington. Helene and her beloved husband Robert, who passed on September 22, 2020 were a perfect match. Both were born on the same day; six hours and two states apart. They married on July 4th, 1953 and were completely devoted to each other. They loved their family as well as polka dancing, long road trips, skiing and the CT and NJ shores. In addition to her family and all things Irish, Helene's lifelong passions were the labor movement, women's rights and equality, the Democratic party and the people of Connecticut. She worked for AFSCME COUNCIL 4 AFL-CIO from 1980 until 2004, first as a Union Rep/Organizer, Service Rep, Staff Rep and finally as Area Coordinator. On the occasion of her retirement from AFSCME Council 4 in 2004, Helene was honored for her 35 years of dedication and service to the labor movement. She then became an Alternate Labor Arbitrator for the State Board of Mediation & Arbitration. Helene received a gubernatorial appointment to the Metropolitan District Commission and served as a commissioner from 2013 - 2016. She was a member of the Board of Directors and various committees of the United Way Capital Area (UWCA) for 20 years and was also active for many years in the Town of Windsor on the Democratic Town Committee and the Zoning Board of Appeals. Helene loved life and enjoyed every single day. She was smart, caring, kind, generous, funny, brave, independent, fiercely loyal and tough as nails. She had boundless energy and thought sleeping was overrated. She never declined an invitation (or dessert of any kind especially tiramisu) and was always going somewhere, doing something. She was crazy about sports and big fan of UCONN Women's Basketball, Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots She loved her husband, children and grandchildren above all else. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and niece. She touched us all and made our days and lives brighter. We will carry her in our hearts always. Helene is survived by her loving children, Susan H. Shay of West Hartford, Robert J. Shay, III of Deer Valley, UT, Karen A. Sullivan and her husband Richard of Basking Ridge, NJ, and Russell J. "Mary Alice Mahon, 92, a resident of West Hartford, CT for over 60 years, passed on Wednesday December 6, 2023. She was born 1931 in Boston, MA, the daughter of John Leo Shea and Alice Marie Shea (Connelly), and raised in part by her stepmom Rita and her Aunt Florence, as her beloved mother died at age 34 giving birth to her. At age 14 Mary was sent to live with her relatives Aunt Florence and Uncle Bob Gundersen, where she formed a close big-sisterly bond with their sons Robert and Richard. Many years later, at the time of her wedding, Mary asked her Uncle Bob to give her away. Mary had one sibling that she cherished, John Leo Shea, Jr  Jack  who died at age 27 from a heart attack, having had rheumatic fever as a child. He honorably served in the US Air Force and died in Japan. Mary's daughter Jacquie is named after him. Mary was a force of nature who persevered despite many setbacks, and was well known for her vivacious, energetic, and engaging manner. With her husband, Thomas D. Mahon, Sr, she raised four children. She kept a meticulously clean and gleaming home, well decorated for every holiday. As soon as she could, Mary returned to the work world and was employed full-time for many decades while caring for children and a household. She was beloved at the University of Hartford's HARTT School of Music, where she was a secretary and administrator for 20 years. She loved helping the students. When she left, three festive retirement parties were thrown in her honor! Mary's husband passed in 2002, and after her sorrow ebbed and she learned to live alone, Mary relished years of exuberant travel, lunches, and cultural events with "my friend Muriel. " She had also traveled to Ireland, Germany, France, numerous trips to Cape Cod and the Rhode Island shore, and many US National Parks with her husband. Mary loved West Hartford, especially walking in Elizabeth Park and at the reservoirs. She was an active member of the West Hartford Senior Center and of St Thomas the Apostle Church's Mother's Circle, of which she was twice leader. Mary was the absolute best of grandmas, showering her grandchildren with love, time, and gifts. For many years she purchased a membership at Winding Trails in Farmington, CT, to bring her grandkids there for picnics and swimming. These and countless adventures with her grandchildren are treasured memories. She loved her sons with a deep and abiding passion and would do anything for them. Mary and her daughter shared many long laughs about life and amused each other tremendously. Mary was very close to her daughter-in-law Ann; they connected on many levels and loved each other unreservedly. Feisty right up until dementia stole her away, Mary announced in 2016: "If anyone is waiting for an 85-year-old to cook them a meal, they're going to be waiting a long time. " She also confided to her daughter with her typical mischievous smile, "People seem to think I'm elderly. " We will miss her yellow post-it notes all over the kitchen cupboards covered with stenographic shorthand no one could read! Mary leaves behind: Thomas Daniel Mahon, Jr (West Hartford, CT), Jacqueline Mary Mahon (Philadelphia, PA), Brian Christopher Mahon and his wife Rebecca (Colchester, CT), and Michael Francis Mahon and his wife Ann (West Hartford, CT) and their children Conor (Brooklyn, NY), Sarah (Boston, MA) and Patrick (West Hartford, CT). A word of deep gratitude to her caregivers especially Sharon (Hyacinth) Murray Rodney, and those at both Hughes Health and West Hartford Health and Rehabilitation. Valerie Cordiano

Valerie Cordiano

Age - 72

December 2, 2023

"Sunrise: August 8, 1951 ~ Sunset: December 1, 2023 Valerie Bivona Cordiano, 72, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and counselor, passed away peacefully on December 1. She was surrounded by her husband and children. She is reunited with God after a 15 year courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind countless people touched by her kindness, generosity, intelligence and empathy. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dean; her four children, Alexis, Douglas, Benjamin and Emma; her grandchildren, Gabriel, Jason, Michael, Nicholas, Jack, Owen, Nico and Luca; her daughters-in-law Kristen and Andrea Cordiano; her son-in-law Dennis Durao; her dog, Archie; her sister Rosemarie Harrison and her brother John Bivona, as well as her nieces Kathleen Budd, Beth Bivona, Jill Bivona and Donna Harrison, and her nephew David Harrison. She was predeceased by her parents Nina and John C. Bivona, her brother-in-law Hugh Harrison, Dean's parents Domenick and Mary Cordiano, and her sister-in-law Sarah Budd. Valerie lived in West Hartford for 30 years and Madison, CT for the last 17 years. Her children continue her tradition of service, as they include a physician, two lawyers and a mental health counselor. Valerie was proud to have grown up in Brooklyn, N. Y. She graduated with honors from SUNY-Binghamton, held Masters Degrees from the University of Hartford and St. Joseph's College, and was a Marriage and Family Therapist for more than 25 years. In addition to helping private patients with their mental health issues, Valerie was a grief-counselor and was the Founder and Director for 22 years of the West Hartford site of The Cove, a grief program for children and their families who have experienced the death of a loved one. Valerie also received the St. Joseph Archdiocesan Medal of Appreciation for her volunteer work with the bereavement group of St. Timothy Parish. She was an extraordinarily gifted counselor and her work continues by her youngest daughter, Emma, who was the Director of Counseling at East Granby High School and is now in private practice in West Hartford. After her retirement from The Cove and her private practice, Valerie became an accomplished potter and exhibited her work at the Guilford Arts Fair. But at the risk of using a cliche, there was no greater joy in Valerie's life than spending time with her children and grandchildren. Ski and beach vacations were supervised by "Nonna" (or "Grammy" as she was known to Gabriel and Jason) and the memories of time spent in Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Colorado and Vermont ski resorts, and the beaches of Madison, will resonate through the lives of her family. Valerie and Dean were high school sweethearts in Brooklyn. In more than 50 years of glorious marriage, she was the touchstone which gave meaning and dignity to Dean's life. Valerie taught high school in Raleigh N. C. while Dean attended Duke Law School. She supported Dean's rise in the Connecticut legal community and did not pursue her counseling career until the last of her children was in sixth grade, exemplifying once again her dedication to family. Although her passing is devastating, her family will choose to celebrate the beloved memories and lessons of Valerie's life: kindness, patience, love, sensitivity to the faults of others, and the willingness to put others' needs before her own. She always found the time to attend her children's (and now grandchildren's) sports and school events, and taught them that the outcome of the event was secondary to whether they gave their all and tried their hardest. The stresses of the day melted away when she greeted you with her warm smile and comforting hugs. And that included her physical interactions with her beloved dogs through the years. They will all be reunited with her on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. Valerie's passing illustrates the truism that God calls the best people to his side early and so lets them enjoy eternal peace sooner rather than later. All of her family will look forward to being united with Nonna when God wills it. Her loving example will help her family and friends understand and accept her untimely passing and its place in God's plan. Visiting hours at Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave. , West Hartford will be on Tuesday, Dec. 5 from 3-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Dec. 6 at 11am at the Church of St. Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant St. , West Hartford. A private burial will take place on Dec. 7. Donations in her memory may be made to The Cove Center for Grieving Children (www. covect. org) or the American Cancer Society (donate. cancer. org) Online expressions of sympathy may be made at www. molloyfuneralhome. com"Show more
