Moberly, MO
Helen Marie Wegs, 96, passed away of natural causes Saturday, May 6, 2023, National Nurses Day, at her home in Moberly, MO. She was born August 31, 1926 in Tulsa, OK to E. J. and Ona Wegs. The Wegs family later moved to Moberly where she spent her youth and early adult years, and considered it her hometown. She became a Registered Nurse, and proudly served in the United States Air Force for 20 years as a Flight Nurse, Charge Nurse, Chief Nurse, and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner retiring as Lieutenant Colonel. She continued as a Pediatric NP in civilian life. While in the US Air Force she was stationed in Germany, Turkey, Goose Bay Labrador, and throughout the US. Her father gave her advice to "Go while you can", and so she did. Helen had a love of travel, which also took her to China, across Europe, even camping along the coast of Baja Mexico. She had a love of classical music that prompted her to join the MU Choral Union for several years. Her time in Turkey sparked an interest in history and archeology. There was always a four-legged doggy companion or two in her life. Helen loved good food whether she was cooking or dining with friends and family; she was a great hostess who loved to entertain. An independent, strong-minded woman, she was known for her fiery personality and quick-wit. She maintained a positive outlook and a grateful attitude being mindful to express her thanks. She developed life-long friendships with some of her military "family" while in the Air Force. Helen wished it to be remembered that she loved life. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother Dora Wegs, brothers B. J. (Buddy) and Emil R (Bob) Wegs, and sisters Rosemary Dunwoody and Doris Hoefer. She is survived by sister Dorothy Irons of Moberly, several nieces and nephews, and her dog, Lucy. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Helen's memory may be made to your favorite animal shelter or food bank. Helen enjoyed her daily glass of red wine or a cold beer, so raise a glass to toast in her memory. A visitation will be held Friday, May 12, 2023, 9-10 am at the Cater Funeral Home Chapel. Services honoring Helens life will follow at 10 am. Committal prayer, military honors, and inurnment will take place at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery.
