Harry (Helmut) Weichsel passed away peacefully on September 19, 2023. At 90 years old, Harry suffered a severe stroke after battling dementia for several years. Family members and friends surrounded him at Connecticut Hospice a bucolic facility in Branford, CT. Harry was born in Marburg, Germany on May 2, 1933. He and his mother Flori Hess Weichsel escaped Nazi Germany and arrived in the United States on September 2, 1941. Harry, Flori and Ernest Weichsel settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut where refugees could find work and build a new life. Harry attended Bridgeport Public Schools and the University of Connecticut. He served in the U. S. Army then returned to Connecticut to join the family business, Fashions on Wheels. The business evolved into The Fashion Showcase, a women's clothing store and bridal boutique. Later in his career, Harry became a successful realtor. Harry was a born salesman; he loved meeting new people, and often casual acquaintances became lifelong friends. Harry was devoted to the City of Bridgeport. He served on several Boards and Commissions. He was given the Key to the City of Bridgeport for establishing "Grassroots Tennis" a way to help inner city children develop athletic and social skills that he believed served him well as an immigrant child and adult. The program expanded to several urban communities throughout Connecticut. In addition to Harry's love of Bridgeport and tennis he loved music, dancing, skiing and football. He was a regular at local diners and Fairfield County eateries. There wasn't a shy bone in his body and that contributed to his relationships with his Army buddies, tennis pals and people from all walks of life. He had a special talent for keeping in touch. Later in life, Harry realized the significance of his story of escaping from the Nazis. He mourned the death of his grandparents and uncle in concentration camps and became a valued speaker at Holocaust Commemorations and in school settings. As a skilled storyteller, Harry touched many lives and fought hard to ensure those lost in the Holocaust were not forgotten. He took great pride in his involvement with the transition of the former synagogue in his hometown of Wetter, Germany into a Community Center to serve the people of Wetter. Harry is survived by his six loving children and six grandchildren: Lauren Belot (Joe), Donna Allen, Caron Murray (Kevin), David Conrad, Kaitlin Weichsel and Billy Daniel (Katie). His grandchildren include Tanner, Luke, Lexi, Gillian, Jonah and Grace to whom he was deeply devoted. He is also survived by his sister Eva Weichsel Hausman. He was pre-deceased by his parents Flori and Ernest Weichsel and his dear brother-in-law Irwin Hausman. The family wishes to extend our appreciation to the many close friends who helped and supported Harry during his final years.
