"Harry William Leverone, Jr. of Watkinsville, Georgia, formerly of Alexandria, Virginia died September 3, 2023 at the age of 98. He was the son of the late Harry William and Gertrude (Ford) Leverone. Harry was born at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D. C. where he graduated from Anacostia High School. He studied electrical engineering at Catholic University and George Washington University after rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant while serving in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After basic training, Harry was trained to install and repair the "Top Secret" radar devices in B-29 bombers on the island of Guam. This expertise later translated to a career at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center working on the first unmanned satellites launched into orbit by the United States. Harry enjoyed woodworking, tinkering with machines, traveling and good food. He loved his family more than anything, and made many sacrifices along with his wife, Joan, of nearly 65 years, to raise five wonderful children who became his pride and joy. Eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren have all been encouraged by his loving hands. Endearing himself to others with his quick wit and silly pranks; Harry made fast friends with just about everyone he met. His kind nature and encouraging words served as an inspiration to those who knew him. He was a quintessential member of the greatest generation. Harry is survived by four children: Thomas William and wife, Tammy of Richmond, KY; Kathleen Ann and husband, Thomas Schmaltz of Watkinsville, GA; Robert James and wife, Barbara of Charlotte, NC; and Paul Neal and wife, Beth of Nellysford, VA; eight grandchildren, Jason, Gretchen, and Benjamin Schmaltz; Nicholas, Alex, Olivia, Abby, and Harry Leverone; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Eva Joan and daughter Mary Elizabeth. Services will be private. Donald Wells

Donald Carle Wells, 101, of Alexandria, VA, passed quietly in the arms of Jesus on Thursday, November 30, 2023. He was born July 23, 1922 in Cambridge, Maryland living near the Choptank River and was the youngest of the four sons of Charles Shelley Wells and Marie Virginia Anderson Wells. Don was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor Covington Wells (in 1997) and his siblings Charles Jr. , William and Richard. Surviving are his children Donald Wells Jr. (Susan), Elizabeth Stone (Joseph), Shelley O'Grady (Alan Willis) and Alfred Wells; grandchildren, Cynthia Huppert, Christopher Stone, Jonathan O'Grady, Katie Van Camp, Thomas Wells, Lynn O'Grady; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Croson, Andrew Huppert, Cash Van Camp, Sway Van Camp, Crew Van Camp and Alina Stone. The Wells family relocated from the Eastern Shore of Maryland to Bethany, West Virginia in 1937 where Don graduated a year early from high school and subsequently graduated from Bethany College and where he became a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He enlisted in the U. S. Naval Reserve and was commissioned as an Ensign in late 1943. Assigned in January 1944 as a deck officer aboard the attack transport (armed troop ship) USS Barnett (APA-5) he suffered some hearing loss during gunnery practice that bothered him for much of his life. On June 6th, Ensign Wells participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, France, with the Barnett delivering troops (and General Teddy Roosevelt, Jr. ) to Utah Beach. After taking back wounded troops to England, he then sailed into the Mediterranean Sea for the Invasion of Southern France in August of 1944. The Barnett then sailed to the Pacific Ocean and was in the invasion of Okinawa against the Japanese. Following the end of World War II, Ensign Wells served on the USS Bexar (another troop ship), delivering occupation troops to Japan and bringing back other soldiers to the U. S. in "Operation Magic Carpet". Don continued to serve his 20 years in the Reserves with destroyer duty, training in anti-sub exercises during the "Cold War" in the Atlantic and was promoted to Lieutenant before retiring. For several days around Veteran's Day, he used to participate in seminars in Fairfax County at Sandburg Middle School and Little Rocky Run Middle School in Chantilly about his experiences in WWII. After the War, he entered the University of Virginia School of Law, graduating with a law degree. This was where he met Eleanor Covington from Culpeper County, VA who had graduated from the UVA School of Nursing as an RN. They married in 1949 and after passing both the Virginia and Maryland Bar exams, moved to the Annapolis area where (due to his high score on the Maryland exam) Don had been appointed to clerk for one year with the Maryland Court of Appeals. Following this, they moved to Alexandria, VA where Don went to work for the Davis & Ruffner Title Corporation and later for the Davis & Ruffner Attorneys as a title examiner and real estate attorney and with Eleanor began to raise a family. Don felt the call to community service and answered the call with over six decades of service to the Alexandria community. He served as Dean, Elder and Trustee for the First Christian Church of Alexandria; became President of the Maury School Elementary PTA; President of the Alexandria Bar Assn. ; volunteered for the Special Olympics; worked with the Alexandria Sea Scouts; became the Alexandria District Chairman for the National Area Boy Scouts of America; Salvation Army Chairman of the Advisory Board in Alexandria; rang the bell over the red Salvation Army collection kettle for several decades into his 90s and served as a President of the Kiwanis Club of Alexandria, with a perfect attendance record of 60 years, achieved at the age of 96. Don enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting and spending time at the beach. He was an early supporter of integration and Project Headstart. Despite all of his community service, he was able to spend time with his wife and four children, taking them on vacations, to see movies and musicals, mentoring them and providing moral leadership. He will be missed. The family would like to thank the staff at the Aarondale Independent, Assisted Living and Memory Care Community in Springfield, VA for their care of Don and for the folks with the local Hospice unit. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Everly Wheatley Funeral Home in Alexandria with visitation on December 7th and a funeral service at the First Christian Church of Alexandria on King Street on December 8. James Lamantea

Age - 90

Sergeant Major (ret. ) James C. "Jack" Lamantea of Alexandria, VA, passed away peacefully at the Adler Center in Aldie, Virginia, on November 28, 2023. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 4, 1933, he was the son of Catherine (Mazzullo) and Frank Lamantea, the dear brother of Lucretia "Dolli" Bacchi and her husband, Tony, of Massachusetts, and Santa Ann "Sandy" Leone of Massachusetts. Jack is survived by his sisters Dolli and Sandy, his two daughters, Claire Ann Reash of Dublin, Ireland, and Stacey Lamantea Brown (Bob Snyder) of Pennsylvania, and his granddaughter, Jennifer Swisher of Pennsylvania. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Dominic and George Lamantea, sister Baby Catherine Lamantea, and granddaughter, Chelsea Reash. SGM Lamantea was a career military man, serving proudly in the U. S. Marine Corps before joining the U. S. Army and rising to the rank of Sergeant Major. He was a member of the U. S. Army Special Forces, an Airborne Ranger, Master Parachutist, and a combat veteran who earned numerous awards and commendations, including the Legion of Honor, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (multiple awards), the Purple Heart, and many foreign awards, among others. Jack had a big heart and a quick wit. He loved fishing and his family and friends for whom he could never do enough. He will be missed by all who knew him and by the many whose lives he touched and made all the better for having done so. May he rest in everlasting peace. Bryan Herzog

Lieutenant Colonel Bryan C. Herzog passed away unexpectedly on Monday, November 13, 2023, at the age of 39, in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Bryan is survived by his wife of sixteen years, Jennifer Herzog; their four children, Roen (9), Maddox (9), Logan (7), Patton (6); his parents Robert and Karen Herzog; his brother, Stephen Herzog; and his sister, Lauren Herzog. Bryan was born on April 17, 1984. While growing up, Bryan lived in several east coast states. Bryan graduated from Susquehannock High School, Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, in 2002. He was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he majored in military history. Upon graduation from USMA in May 2006, Bryan was commissioned as an Infantry Officer. He went on to receive an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2017. Bryan was a devoted husband and an incredibly proud father. He married Jenni, his high school sweetheart and best friend, on June 2, 2007, in Black River, New York. Bryan adored his children and did everything he could to spend time with his family, making memories and giving them experiences. Over the years, Bryan's military career took his family to eight different locations across the country. Bryan was a very humble soul who achieved a great deal during his career, which included three deployments to combat operations in Iraq. Some of his personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (1OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2OLC), Combat Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, Pathfinder Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and other awards for service to our nation. Bryan was always passionate about working with soldiers. In 2007 Bryan served as a Platoon Leader in Delta Company, 2-14 Infantry in Fort Drum, New York. Following that assignment, he served as a Platoon Leader in the Pathfinder Company, 2-10 Aviation in Fort Drum. In 2010 Bryan served as the Company Commander in Bravo Company, 1-12 CAV in Fort Hood, Texas. He next commanded Delta Company 1-3 Infantry and the Honor Guard Company in Fort Myer, Virginia. While at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, Bryan served as the 3-4 CAV Squadron XO and the 3rd Brigade, 25th ID S3. Following his assignment as a brigade S3, Bryan was selected for service on the Joint Staff. While serving at the Pentagon, Bryan was selected for Battalion Command and slated to take command of 1-27 Infantry at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii in May 2024. While Bryan had an impressive military career, his role as a husband and father is where he shone the brightest. On the weekends, you could find him cooking breakfast or smoking a brisket while jamming out to Bruce Springsteen or Billy Joel. A sports enthusiast, Bryan enjoyed taking his kids to and from practices and games. Bryan also volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Leader and took great pride in watching his children follow in his footsteps. He loved road trips, roller coasters, and baseball, and he was an encyclopedia of knowledge. All those who knew Bryan will remember him for his superb karaoke skills, his strong work ethic, and his brilliant mind. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, December 10, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home in Alexandria, Virginia. Gai Truong

On November 27, 2023, Gai Truong, 74, of Alexandria, VA, passed away peacefully at Inova Fairfax holding her son's hand. Gai was born in December of 1948, in the Quang Tri province of Vietnam, daughter of Hoang Truong and Chat Thi Tran. On April 30, 1975, during the Fall of Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War, Gai left Vietnam as a refugee on the MS Truong Xuan ship with 4,000 other refugees. She was rescued by a Danish Clara Maersk cargo ship and taken to a refugee camp in Hong Kong, where she stayed for six months and met the love of her life, Sang Pham. They both immigrated to America with the sponsorship of the 2 Presbyterian Church of Oil City, PA, where Gai lived for 22 years and raised their two children, Robert Pham and Rebecca (Pham) Haug. Gai moved to Northern Virginia in 1998, where she remained until her time of passing. Gai worked in the kitchens of the hospitality industry until her retirement in 2013. Despite having endured many hardships in her life, Gai maintained a positive attitude and showed kindness to everyone she met. Her love language was food - she loved making delicious meals for her family and friends. During her retirement years, she enjoyed growing herbs in her garden and learning new Vietnamese recipes through YouTube. She was a woman with strong family values and cherished her time with her children, grandchildren, and extended family. Gai is survived by her husband Sang Pham, her son Robert Pham, her daughter Rebecca (Pham) Haug, her son-in-law Brian Haug, and three grandchildren, Emma Haug (12), Sophia Haug (10) and Nathan Haug (10). John Matthew Scorce, 88 years old, passed away on November 21, 2023 in Alexandria, Virginia. Jack was born on March 5, 1935 to Louis and Marie Scorce in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Brooklyn Preparatory High School, Fordham University majoring in accounting, and St John's University Law School. He married Denise Fauci on August 22, 1959. Jack served in the US Army subsequent to his college ROTC program. After law school he began a career as a corporate attorney in the telecommunications industry which spanned several decades. He was instrumental in the break-up of the telecommunications monopoly. After retiring Jack was a volunteer for several years and a board member of the United Community Ministries organization in Alexandria, whose mission is to serve the most impoverished areas of Fairfax County. Jack is preceded in death by his son Eric Scorce. He is survived by his wife Denise Scorce, daughter and son-in law Joli and Wilfred Fekeci, grandchildren Nicolas and Jacklyn Fekeci, Stefan Fekeci, Brandon Scorce, Kayla Scorce and great-granddaughter Delilah Fekeci. Betty Jean Thodos, 88, of Alexandria, VA, passed away on November 19, 2023 in Alexandria, VA. Betty Jean was born in Alexandria, VA to Walter E. Robey and Lennis A. Robey on August 5, 1935. She married her late husband John T. Thodos on January 1, 1955 in Alexandria, VA. Betty Jean and John had five children, two sons Ronnie and Steve and three daughters Ann, Sherry and Patrica. Betty Jean was a fun and loving woman who cared for many. She was selfless and understanding and always wanted to make everyone happy. She will forever be loved and cherished. She was the eldest of the family. Betty Jean was a grandmother too many to whom they called her Nana. She had eleven grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Betty Jean is preceded in death by her mother and father Lennis A. Robey and Walter E. Robey; husband John T. Thodos; two sons Ronnie and Steve Thodos; three sisters Catherine V. Robey, Evylyn E.
