of Ann Arbor, Michigan, age 73, passed away November 29, 2023, at Chelsea Retirement Community Towsley Village Memory Care under the care of Arbor Hospice. She will be missed by many. The angels picked her up and took her to her forever home with the Lord and departed family and friends forever. She was born July 27, 1950, in Bethesda, Maryland, the daughter of William "Edward" & Barbara (Powell) Thompson. Marie graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1968, then attended Towson State College. After college she moved to Michigan and continued her education at Eastern Michigan University. Marie was very active with the Washtenaw County Homebuilders Association. And she enjoyed traveling (including Europe, Canada, and the US). On Feb. 14, 1981, she married her beloved husband Greg at the First Congregational Church, Douglas Memorial Chapel in Ann Arbor. She was raised in the Episcopalian church and attended the First Congregational church in Ann Arbor. She found her calling in sales. The homebuilding community interested her. She started selling at Pella Window and Door Company and then moved on to home appliance sales at Big George's Home Appliances in Ann Arbor, Walter's Home Appliances in Brighton and finally a home at Heydlauff's Appliances and Electronics in Chelsea. Her Kindness, helpful and detailed knowledge of products were her trademarks. She loved working with her customers, and they loved her back. Many of them became friends. She held many positions with the Washtenaw County Homebuilders Association - now known as Builders & Remodels Association of Greater Ann Arbor- BRAG. Her mom and dad met in England during World War II and married there. He was from Maryland and she was English. Marie had an outgoing personality, a great smile, and also a big heart. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and sister-in-law who are all buried at Arlington National Cemetery. She donated grave wreaths yearly at Christmas time to Wreaths Across America for Arlington National Cemetery. She is also preceded in death by her loving uncles, aunts, and cousins in Canada and the UK. In addition to her husband Greg, she is survived by nieces, Betty Ann (Peter) Johnson of Maryland, and Hannah Barnsdale of Michigan; nephew, David (Cheryl) Johnson of New Hampshire; dear grandniece, Madelyne Weimer-Barnsdale of Michigan; special cousins, Donna (David) Able of Ontario, Allan (Diane) Roden of Indiana, Neal (Su) Cartwright, Lynn (Mike) Cartwright, Wendy (Alan) Vickers, Geoff (Kim) Peters, and Barry Peters in the UK, Sally Jo (George) Siterlet of Michigan, Dave (Sharon) Barnsdale of Wisconsin, Charles (Janine) Happy, Dale (Connie) Happy, Gale (Brenda) Happy, Keith (Janet) Happy, and Dennis (Lisa) Happy all of Michigan; sisters-in-law, Susan (Barry) Austin of Arizona, and Janet McGinty of Colorado; brothers -in- law, Ron (Margi) Barnsdale of Michigan, and Larry (Sharon) Barnsdale of Florida; and special uncle John in the UK. She had special classmates that she never forgot, Jane Farfan, Ken Watkins, and Bob Teague all of Maryland, and Caroline Winchester of Nebraska. Marie never liked funerals, so none is planned. She came into this world quietly- until the doctor slapped her on the bottom. That is the way she wanted to leave - quietly. Cremation has taken place. Her final resting place will be in Virginia. He was born August 29, 1954, the son of William Phillips and Estella Drain in Kalamazoo, MI. Deacon William graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1972 and received an Associate's degree from Kalamazoo Valley Community College in December of 2015. He was united in marriage to Anita DeLos Reyes on April 13, 2012, and they renewed their wedding vows in September 2019. Deacon William accepted Christ and was a faithful member of New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ in Kalamazoo, under the leadership of former pastors, Rev. Mack Russell and pastor emeritus Admin. Rudolph Thomas; and current pastor, Supt. William Adams. He served the church in many capacities including Deacon, Prayer Warrior, Church Trustee, Business and Finance Officer, and Sunday School teacher. Deacon William lost his eyesight in 2001, but he did not let his disability slow him down. He was an excellent businessman and was happy to assist others in any way that he could. He held many different jobs during his lifetime, including being a successful entrepreneur. His last position was Marketing Consultant for Focus Forward (formally M-Web). He had a talent for connecting people with the right resources. He was a great friend who could be counted on to give wise advice. He enjoyed a good laugh, and spending time with family and friends. William will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Deacon William was preceded in death by his parents, William Phillips and Estella (Drain) Brown. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Anita Drain; one son Damon L. Smith of Kalamazoo, MI; two step-children, Ryam Ganjehi and Cara Brown of the Philipine\u0027s; one brother, Oscar A. Sebastian Joseph "Jeff" Giuffrida, age 91, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023. Sebastian "Jeff" was born on the 20th of February, 1932, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to parents Franceso and Febronia Giuffrida. He was raised in his native state of Massachusetts alongside his sister Teresa. In 1949 he graduated from Central Catholic high school where he excelled academically, receiving the status of Class Salutatorian. Following his high school graduation, he furthered his academic achievements by attending Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. His journey with the US Navy was solidified upon receiving an NROTC scholarship and being appointed Midshipman, USN. While at Tufts, he earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Mechanical engineering. Upon his graduation in 1953, Jeff received his commission as Ensign, USN and served active duty aboard the USS Wright (CVL49), a light aircraft carrier. In 1956, Jeff was honorably discharged from the active Navy. Three years following his discharge, Jeff began a 21-year long Reserve career after becoming affiliated with the Naval Reserve in NIRU 9-1-2. After serving his country for decades, Captain Giuffrida retired from the Naval Reserve. In June 1957, Jeff would marry his dear wife, Mary Ellen Shackelton. Together they would grace the world with two sons, Frank J. and Mark W. Their joy would continue as they welcomed three grandchildren as well; Kristen, Eric, and Paul. Through Jeff's life, his great joys included spending time with his grandchildren, cheering for the U of M football team, and feeling the warmth of the sun while living in his condo in Bradenton, Florida. Jeff's family will remember him as a loving father, and grandfather. Jeff was preceded in death by his parents; Francesco and Febronia Giuffrida, his loving wife; Mary Ellen Giuffrida, his sister; Teresa Scalise, and his dear son; Frank J. Giuffrida. POLAND — Anna Jean Sveda Dean, 74, passed away suddenly in her husband’s arms, Saturday evening, Nov. 25, 2023, while visiting Ann Arbor, Michigan with her beloved family. Anna Jean, affectionately known as Jeannie, A. J. and Baba, was born Feb. 24, 1949, in Youngstown, a daughter of John and Mary Petrus Sveda. She attended Byzantine Catholic Central Elementary School and was a 1967 graduate of Struthers High School, where she played clarinet in the marching band. She earned an associate degree in business from Youngstown College of Business, where she met her soulmate and loving husband, Donald D. Dean Jr. , whom, upon his return from the U. S. Armed Forces, she married Sept. 16, 1973. This fall Jeannie and Don celebrated 50 years of happiness together with their sons, daughter-in-law and grandson, at one of their favorite restaurants in Ann Arbor. Afterwards, they attended a Michigan football game, where their love and anniversary was celebrated on the scoreboard at the Big House. Anna Jean worked at RMI Titanium in Niles until the birth of her first child. Thereafter, and following the birth of her second child, she also was an administrator of the Byzantine Catholic Central School lunch program, in addition to being a dedicated homemaker to her family. She was baptized an Orthodox Christian, was a former member of St. John Orthodox Church and a current member of Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church. Baba loved being with her family and bringing everyone together. She especially enjoyed going on cruises; casino trips with her husband and their dear friends, George and Diane Horvath; day trips with her bestie, Rosie Zetts; getting together with family over the holidays; and visiting her son in San Diego. Aside from her husband, she is survived by her two sons, Jeffrey (Dr. Lindsay) Dean of Wadsworth and Dr. Jon Gregory Dean of San Diego, California; a brother, John Sveda, of Struthers; her grandson, Evan J. Dean, whom she deeply loved; her nephew and godson, Dan Lucas of Lowellville and his family; her brother-in-law, Diz (Brenda) Dean of McDonald; and sister-in-law, Judy (Daniel) Bagaglia of Farmdale and their families. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter; sister, Susan M. Sveda; and many relatives and dear friends. Friends and family may call 10 a. m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, 2726 Center Road (Route 224), Poland, OH 44514. Ruth Lillian Peterson was born on August 3, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to Ernest and Christine Peterson, immigrants from southern Sweden and members of the Swedish Evangelical Covenant Church. She attended Dixon Elementary and Hirsch High School. It was in high school harmony class that Ruth first encountered Robert (Bob) Gardstrom, whom she would later marry. Ruth attended North Park College, graduating in June 1950. While there, she sang in the college choir and re-connected with Bob when the choir performed at Bob's church. She worked at Peoples Gas Light & Coke Co. before marrying Bob on October 13, 1951. When Bob accepted a job at General Motors Saginaw Steering Gear Company, the couple moved to Saginaw, Michigan where they lived for the next 63 years. During their time in Saginaw, Ruth was a stay-at-home mother of three daughters, Christine, Karen, and Susan. She participated in activities necessary for the well-being of the family and engaged in volunteer activities through the Warren Avenue and First Presbyterian Churches in Saginaw. She sang in the Saginaw Choral Society and served as a member of the Saginaw Farm and Garden Club. Ruth attended classes at both Delta College and Saginaw Valley University. She became a member of the Saginaw Valley Master Gardener Association and volunteered regularly at the Japanese Garden and other local sites. Ruth was also a member of Youth Protective Services and helped to pass the vote necessary to build the new Saginaw County Juvenile Detention Home. In 2014, at the urging of their daughters, Ruth and Bob moved to Glacier Hills in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where they quickly joined in activities there. Robert sang in the Hill Singers, served on the landscape committee, and enjoyed watercolor classes. Ruth became the Editor of the Glacier Hills Lark, a monthly newsletter for publishing poems and stories by residents and relaying news of activities taking place in the community. In her later years, Ruth became very interested in the Scandinavian background of their family, and she delved into genealogy, which brought the family in closer contact with relatives in Sweden and around the world. She and Robert provided opportunities for their daughters to visit with family in Scandinavia, which was quite special for all. Ruth is survived by her husband, Robert Gardstrom; their three daughters, Christine Barton of Indianapolis, Indiana, Karen Gardstrom (Richard Boothman) of Ann Arbor, and Susan Gardstrom of Dayton, Ohio. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Christina Boothman, Erika Boothman (Michael McGovern), Karl Boothman, Andrew Barton, and Dillon Corrigan (Kimberly); and two great-grandchildren, Camden McGovern, and Miles Corrigan. Margaret "Betty" Elizabeth Juntunen, age 98 of Ann Arbor, Michigan, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023. Betty was born on June 14, 1925, to parents Harry and Lillian (Chestnutt) Davis and raised in the Metro Detroit area alongside her brother, John. After graduating from Redford High School, Betty married Clyde E. Juntunen, who was serving as Second Lieutenant in the Army Air Force. The two settled in Detroit where they would start a family with the addition of their three sons, Mike, Terry, and Dan. Eventually, the family relocated to Livonia and relocated one more time in 1961 to Ann Arbor. Clyde and Betty were season ticket holders for U of M football games for almost 65 years and enjoyed many tailgates with friends and family. She gave a soft smile when her family told her that her beloved team beat Ohio State after Saturday's home game. Betty was the family caregiver. She carefully doted over her husband and sons. As the years passed, she cared for many members of her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Juntunen; her son, Dan Juntunen; her parents, Harry and Lillian Davis; as well as her brother and sister-in-law, John and Marjorie Davis. Betty will be remembered by her sons, Mike Juntunen and Terry (Deanne) Juntunen; her grandchildren, Cheryl, Steve (Leah), Eric (Anne), Jason (Lauren), and Ryan (Meena); as well as her great grandchildren, Althea, Violet, Madeline, Avery, and Rylee. Roger R. Bridges Belleville, MI At age 69, passed away peacefully at Trinity Health-St. Joseph Mercy Health in Ann Arbor, Michigan on November 27, 2023, with his loving family by his side. He was born on May 27, 1954 in Asheville, North Carolina to Roy and Margie (Shelton) Bridges. While in Asheville, North Carolina they lived on a dairy farm. As a young boy, his family moved to Detroit so his father could work in the automotive industry. On September 20, 1971, he married Bettie Lou Jones and together, they raised three daughters. Throughout their marriage, they lived in different communities including Milan, Willis, and eventually Belleville. Roger always had a passion for cars. He spent all of his life fixing up cars, and ultimately his hobby became his life's career. He owned and operated a collision shop, which included his ability of auto-body repair, restoration, painting and fabricating. He was so talented, he would mentor others, problem solve for them and spent countless hours working on classic cars. He also enjoyed fishing, watching the deer, and was an animal lover, with a big heart, always taking in domestic animals. Any stray cat or dog that showed up at his door, he would soon be feeding and taking care of them. His greatest joy was spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. His children have fond memories of him playing guitar as they sang, and the grandchildren loved when grandpa would bring out his guitar. Besides his wife of over 52 years, he is survived by three daughters: Barbara (Jeff) Koehler of Belleville, Karen Bridges of Willis, and Melinda Bridges of Belleville, eight grandchildren: Tiffany, Travis, Austin and Alex Koehler, Kaitlynn (Kyle) Girvan, Devin, Artesha, and Nevaeh Bridges, along with five great grandchildren: Jaxson, Keagan, Braiden, Cattaleya and Zaydyn. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Roy and Rex Bridges. Cremation has taken place.
