Harlan Robert "Johnny" Abner of Ewing, Kentucky passed away at the age of 60 on Thursday, August 17, 2023 surronded by his family. He was born April 4, 1963 in Fleming County, Kentucky to the late Robert E. "Jim" Abner and Roberta Ann Dye. Johnny spent most of his life working on the farm and as a mechanic for Stephens Machinery in Ewing for many years. He enjoyed raising a garden, fishing, playing horseshoes and cornhole, but most of all he enjoyed having cookouts so that he could spend time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James "Jimmy" Highfield, and one infant sister Hazel Lee. Survivors include his children, Jeremy Abner, Jonathan Abner, Tiffany Abner all of Ewing, and Tabitha Abner of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky; one brother, David "Alpo" Abner; five sisters, Patty Clark, Ruth Clark both of Ewing, Mary lou Abner, Lena Black, and Robyn Abner all of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Levi Cole Abner, Chase Abner, Macy Abner, Peyton Stewart and Darah Fleming; Several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Services will be conducted at 12 noon on Wednesday August 23, 2023 in the chapel of the Price Brothers Funeral Home with Brother Greg Grimes officiating. Johnny will be laid to rest next to his parents in the Sunnyside Cemetery at Mt. Tabor. A gathering of family and friends will take place after 5:00 P. M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Casket bearers will be Jonathan Abner, Chris Highfield, Jamie Highfield, Vincen Price, Daniel "Boone" Dye, Jared Wagner, Brad Stephens, and Tony Arbogast. Honorary casket bearers will be Jeremy Abner, Taylor O'Connor, Tonya Arbogast, Jackie Wheeler, Kimberly Fooks, Lawrence Hilton, and Jim Paige. Charles Calvin Smith, 83 of Ewing, Kentucky passed away early Tuesday morning, June 27, 2023 at his home. He was born in Brackenridge, Pennsylvania on September 30, 1939 to the late John Leroy Smith and Alice Ruth Atkinson Smith. Mr. Smith was retired from the United States Air Force after 23 years of service. He received several medals and commendations for his service especially during the Vietnam conflict. He enjoyed hunting, reading, playing pinochle and was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Helen Oakes Smith, one son, Aaron Smith, one brother, Bill Smith and three sisters; Cora, Alice and Faye. Also, a daughter-in-law, Gay Smith. Survivors include two sons, Bill Smith of Xenia, Ohio and Shane Smith of Dayton, Ohio. Two daughters, Yvonne Phillips and her husband Brian of Huber Heights, Ohio and Sharon Baxter and her husband Bob of Ewing, Kentucky. Eleven grandchildren, Nineteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Also, sixteen nieces, nephews and many other realtives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Saturday, July 1, 2023 in the chapel of the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Flemingsburg, Kentucky with Pastor Ron Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in the Fleming County Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the United States Air Force, the W. N. Fant American Legion Post No. 5 and the Franklin Sousley V. F. W. Post No. 1834. Visitation at the funeral home is after 6:00 pm Friday and on Saturday morning until the hour of the service. Luwana Mae McKee Overley, 89, of Ewing, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at her daughter's home in Ewing. She was born June 6, 1934 in Fleming County, Kentucky, to the late Sammie McKee and Viola McRoberts McKee. She was a homemaker, a 1952 graduate of Fleming County High School and a member of the Hilltop Christian Church. Luwana enjoyed quilting, reading, working puzzles, farming, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren who brought joy to her life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon "Peazer" Overley, whom she married on May 26, 1954 and one infant sister, Christine McKee. Survivors include her daughter, Carol Hughes and her husband, Jackie of Ewing; two grandchildren, Candice Adamson and Johna Hughes; four great-grandchildren, Sydney Adamson, Carley Adamson, John "J. D. " Adamson, and Brooks Hull; and two great-great-grandchildren, Jackson Applegate and Aria Applegate. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Dorothy Jean Sams Allen, 80, of Ewing, Kentucky passed away Sunday, May 28, 2023 at her residence. She was born March 19, 1943 in Nicholas County, Kentucky to the late Walter Sams and Mary Coleman Sams. Dorothy retired from Jockey International after more than 30 years. She attended the Ewing Christian Church and the Ewing Baptist Church. Dorothy enjoyed making crafts, sewing, painting and her love for kids. Her family and grandchilren and great grandchildren meant the world to her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rocky Allen; two sisters, Marion "Nan" Graves and Reva Nickerson. Survivors include one son, Dwight Allen and wife Connie of Ewing; one daughter, Lisa Gulley of Paris, Kentucky; one brother. Charles Sams of Sharpsburg, Kentucky; two sisters, Frances Dunn and husband Joe of Carlisle, Kentucky and Margaret Hatton also of Carlisle. Gary Wayne "Cooter" Shields, departed this life peacefully surrounded by his family on November 28, 2022 in Ewing, Kentucky at the age of 68. He was born June 1, 1954 in Robertson County, Kentucky to the late Malen "Poodle" Shields and Lorena Mae Collins Shields. Gary was a member of the Robertson County Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed fishing, playing cornhole, woodworking and hunting. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother; James "Jimmy" Shields, and one sister; Brenda Jarrell. Survivors include a special friend of eighteen years, Rita Abner, One Son; Kelly Wayne Shields of Ohio, One daughter; Amanda Jo Moran (Christopher) of Maysville, Kentucky. One step daughter; Tonya Renee Arbogast (Tony) of Ewing, and one step son; David Edward Abner of Ewing. Grant R. Rickmon, 76 of Ewing, Kentucky passed away Sunday, September 11, 2022, at his home in Ewing. He was born December 29, 1945, in Petersburg, Virginia to the late Grant U. Rickmon and Edna Rudolph Rickmon. Grant was a United States Army veteran having served during the Vietnam era. He was awarded the Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal. He served 13 months in Korea and was Honorably discharged after nearly 11 years of service to his country. He was a member of the Riverside Baptist Church in Tram, Kentucky and was a member of the Wounded Warriors, Military Order of the Purple Heart and the V. F. W. in Ivel, Kentucky. Grant was a car enthusiast and enjoyed taking care of his yard. He was an avid University of Kentucky football and basketball fan. Grant was a retired auto mechanic and owned and operated a repair shop in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his children, twins, Timmy Craft and Tammy Ratliff. Also, a Great-grandson, Julius. Survivors include his wife Diana Blevins Rickmon, Three sons, Billy (Melissa) Craft of San Francisco, California, Wesley Brinson of Rogers, Arkansas and Grant Craft of Lexington, Kentucky. James William "Jimmy" Highfield, 70, of Ewing, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at his home, surrounded by his family. Jimmy was born on June 3, 1952 in Fleming County Kentucky, to the late Carrol Highfield and Roberta Ann Dye Abner. Jimmy loved the outdoors, mowing his yard, working in tobacco, doing farm work which he did all of his life, but most of all he loved sitting on the front porch and watching traffic pass by and throwing up his hand to speak to everyone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Lee Highfield, his stepfather, Jim Robert Abner and his grandparents, Harlan and Hazel Dye.
