SURGOINSVILLE - Hanes Cooper, 91, passed away on Friday, October 6, 2023, following a brief illness. Hanes was born in Hawkins County on September 30, 1932, to Dee and Molly Cooper. He attended Sun Rise School through the eighth grade. He retired from Eastman Kodak and was an Army Veteran. Hanes served several political offices including the Mayor of Surgoinsville, Hawkins County Commissioner, and also was in the Hawkins County Rescue Squad, Surgoinsville Volunteer Fire Dept. and the Hawkins County Ruritan. He was the type of person to give you the shirt off his back. He was known for his homemade rolls, that were served at many church suppers over the years Hanes leaves behind many dear best friends and many more because he never met a stranger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Juanita Barton Cooper; sisters, Imogene Ratledge (Hugh) and Mary Lena Altom (Jack); brothers, Cecil Cooper, J. D. Cooper, and Doug Cooper. Hanes is survived by his daughter, Robin Ford (Jeff), granddaughter, Taylor Hoffman; great grandchildren, Mya and Zaiden Bellamy; girlfriend, Linda Wilmoth and her son, Glenn Hall; brothers, Roy Cooper (Kay), and Robert Cooper (Betty); sister-in-law, Betty (Doug) Cooper; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to his caregivers, Sharon Carr, Anna Davis, Barbara Johnson, and the staff members at Amedysis Hospice that helped care for Hanes. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at Bethel Community Cemetery with Rev. George L. Winegar, and Brian Burchfield officiating. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:45 PM. Pallbearers will be Danny Alvis, Danny Lawson, Don Wright, Adam Strickler, Cody Bellamy, Tom Eidson, and Gerald Ward. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bethel Cemetery Fund.

John 3:16 Marilyn Charlene (Seaver) Wagers, 82, of Surgoinsville, TN, went home to be with her Lord and Savior after an extended illness surrounded by her family. Marilyn was born on September 18, 1941, to the late O. H. and Blanche (Cassell) Seaver. She was raised and has resided in Hawkins Co. her entire life. She graduated from Church Hill High School in 1959. Marilyn retired after 21 years of service as the secretary for Church Hill Clinic. However, her most important role was always that of wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her family adored her, and she loved them with her entire heart. She had a heart of gold and a quick wit that kept smiles on the faces of everyone around her. She will be dearly missed, but we rejoice in knowing we will see her again. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her five brothers, Paul, George, Carl, Winton, and Robert Seaver. Marilyn is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, James B. Wagers; daughters, Tammy Pilgrim (Byron), Jamie Little, and Holly Newman; grandchildren, Nicole McCurry (Sean), Kaleigh Cole (Sammy), Jessica Kirkendall (Kodi), Wes Williams, Emily Contessa (Ben), Tyler Newman (Kelly), Tanner and Lucas Little, and Austin Barker; great grandchildren, Kevin and Lyla McCurry, Adalynn and Emersyn Kirkendall, Aurora Williams, Shawn and Riley Cole, and one on the way; brothers, Hugh Seaver (Glenda), James Seaver (Susie), and Randall Seaver; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. The family would like to thank Amanda Bradley with Amedysis Hospice for the excellent care, kindness, and support. A visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00 PM on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at Johnson-Arrowood Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Heath Davidson officiating. A graveside service will follow at Church Hill Memory Gardens. Joe Curtis "Curt" Blair, age 90, of Surgoinsville, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2023. He was a retiree of AFG (Cardinal Glass) after 33+ years of service. He was a veteran of the US Military having served in the Army. Curt was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and a long standing member of Jenkin's Chapel Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Mae Blair; son, Wesley Curtis Blair; parents, Joe and Vivian Blair; and 2 sisters, Bernice "Mrs. Ralph Cox" and Judy Roller. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sherry McDaniel and husband, Al; and a special canine, Dude McDaniel. Norman Bell, age 57, of Surgoinsville, TN, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 26, 2023. He had a passion for building and riding motorcycles and was known for his abilities to do so. In addition, he loved to fish and was an administrator and member of "Catfishin" of Tricities, TN. Norman had a special place in his heart for animals and they also loved him. He was an avid and devoted Trump supporter and fan all the way. Most of all, he was a strong hearted man with the highest of moral values who loved God and lived life according to his terms. He will be forever missed and loved by his family. He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents. Left to cherish his memory are his 2 sons, Matt Bell of Schuylerville, NY, and Nicholas Bell (Aaliyah); mother, Mary Mielcarek (Joe); father, Richard Bell (Mary) of Ft. SURGOINSVILLE - Joseph Jeffery "Flop" Armstrong, 65, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023, following a brief illness. Jeff was born in Kingsport, TN on December 11, 1957, to his parents, Joe and Marian Armstrong. He was a graduate of Surgoinsville High School and attended Lyons Chapel AME Zion Church for many years. Everyone knew him as "Flop" and he was well known in the community and a friend to all he knew and met. He worked as an operator for Lyons Construction. In his earlier years he enjoyed riding motorcycles, and always enjoyed being outdoors and spending time with his family. He was a loving son, brother, papaw and uncle. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Ronnie Armstrong. Flop is survived by his brothers, Dana "Sprout" Armstrong, and Nathan "Rooster"Armstrong; his girlfriend, Dovie Russell; several grandchildren; as well as many extended family members, and many dear friends. SURGOINSVILLE - Mr. John D. Winegar, 95, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 23, 2023, with his family by his side. John was born on August 27, 1927, in Rogersville, TN to his parents, Wilburn and Rosa Head Winegar. He loved the outdoors, mowing his yard, and when he was able the cemetery, and being with his family. John was of the Baptist faith and attended Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Rosa Winegar; granddaughter, Stella Gildrie; and his sons-in-law, Don Anderson, and Randall Coker. He is survived by his children, Cleorus Winegar (Robin), Alberta Barrett (Charles), Faye Etta Anderson (Don), and Viola Coker (Randall); grandkids, Hank Winegar (Kim), Sherman Barrett (Glenda), John Barrett (Cookie), Sonia Russell (Rodney), Lora Starnes, Shelia Churchwell, and Bronson Coker; as well as 9 great grandkids, and 12 great great grandkids. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at The John Winegar Cemetery on Caney Valley Loop. He was a family man and loved spending time with them especially all his grandkids. Craig enjoyed working on cars and being outside doing landscaping. He was a loving husband, father, and papaw. He is preceded in death by his father, Ralph Christian. He is survived by wife, Debbie Thurman; children, Dustin Crawford (Ashley), Jasmine Thurman, Travis Barnette (Carla), and Megan Barnette (Dakota Bradshaw); mother, Ethel Barnette; grandchildren, Trey, Kailey, Lilly, Abby, Elly, Chelsea, Malcolm, Marley, Cora, Oakley, Delilah, Dixie, Atlas, Destiny, Harlen, and a little grandson on the way; sisters, Cindy Flanigan, and Pam Dalton; brother, Billy Benton; best friend and cousin, Crockett; as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Greg Alley; and sister, Betty Alley. She is survived by her daughters, Betty Lynn Fletcher of Greeneville, TN, and Arletha Sue Moffitt; son, Jeff (Alison) Alley; brother, Billy (Deloris) Mauk; sister, Linda Branch of Greeneville, TN; grandchildren, David Fletcher, DeAnna Parrigan, David (Nate) Alley-Byrd, Lindsey (David) Thompson, Ryan (Ashley) Alley and Alicia (Damien) Phillips; and great-grandchildren, Patrick, Mason and Noah Parrigan, and Ally, Cameron and Kyra Thompson.
