Age - 80
December 5, 2023
Harvey Samuel Myers, Jr. , passed away peacefully on December 3, 2023 at Stella Maris in Timonium. He was born on January 7, 1943 to the late Harvey S. and Madeline B. (Euler) Myers. At the age of 10 Harvey moved from Parkville with his family to a new home constructed by his father in Cub Hill. He was a member of 4-H clubs, raising a cow or two and tending a large garden. Harvey spent many summer days with his parents, sister Deanna and lots of extended family at the their property on the Bush River.
Harvey graduated from Parkville High School in 1961 and spent one year at the University of Baltimore. Harvey married Martha Maberry in 1964. They welcomed their daughter Susan in 1966. The marriage ended in divorce.
Harvey joined the Maryland National Guard in 1965 and missed the birth of his daughter while at boot camp. His service lasted six years and included being part of the National Guard presence in Baltimore during the riots that took place in 1968. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant before his honorable discharge in 1971.
After attending college, Harvey joined his father in the family business, S&M Contractors. He continued doing construction after the death of his Dad, completing projects for state of Maryland and Baltimore County, including his crowning achievement the Towson Library, completed in 1974.
Harvey went on to own several businesses, including the Village Greenery in Parkville and Lutherville, the Whistle Stop in Lutherville, Hungrie Harvey's on the boardwalk in Ocean City, MD and the Emerald Tavern in beautiful, downtown Parkville. St. Patrick's Day became a legendary celebration each year at the Emerald. Many people, both men and women, collected buttons that proclaimed, "I kissed Harvey on St. Patrick's Day at the Emerald Tavern".
The Emerald Tavern was sold in early November 2000, the same year he attended every Ravens game, home and away the rest of that season, including the Superbowl in Tampa, FL. (Ravens 24/Giants7) Harvey's love for Baltimore sports was well established as his family had Colts season tickets. In those years when Baltimore did not have an NFL team, Harvey embraced the CFL Baltimore Stallions, following the team to the Canadian League Championship in Regina, Saskatchewan. Harvey also appreciated the Orioles, especially the 2023 season, watching all televised games.
After his time at the Emerald, Harvey went back to work, delivering nuclear medicine for Cardinal Health. This was work that he took pride in even though he said, "a trained monkey could do it". He was a well regarded team member of the company and a welcome visitor to nuclear medicine departments all over the metropolitan area. As Norm on cheers, he was greeted warmly at each stop. Harvey was on the job, driving the DC Beltway when he suffered his first stroke in June of 2017.
Harvey was very social, loving parties and especially dancing. He was often the first person on the dance floor and coaxed everyone he could into a Y. M. C. A conga line. He was also a skilled and savvy opponent during a garter toss. Only Diet Coke and a good dance beat was needed for him to be the life of the party. He was a member of the Baltimore Hand Dance Club and danced several nights a week all around the Baltimore/DC area. He was also very active in Parents Without Partners in the 1970's and 80"s. In addition, Harvey was on the reunion planning committee for Parkville High School, Class of "61.
Harvey is predeceased by sister and brother-in-law, Deanna and Merle Bailiff in 2010. He is survived by his daughter Susan and her husband Gregg Landry of Cub Hill. He was very proud of his grandsons, August "Myers" and Quinn "Teammate" Landry. He is also survived by his niece Melissa Bailiff and great-niece Alyssa Bailiff.
Harvey will be remembered by many as a nice guy with a big personality. We are thankful for the friendships that endured during his later years.
Harvey's good health and busy schedule all changed after experiencing a stroke in 2017. The long term effects of this and another stroke lead to a long, gradual decline and his death. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in his memory to The Stroke Foundation at thestrokefoundation. org.
