Donald A. Savery, age 80, of Rolfe, IA, passed away on October 4, 2023, at his lifelong home. Born on August 24, 1943, in Des Moines, IA, Don was adopted by Edmund and Isabel Savery, joining his sister Jeanne in Guthrie Center, IA. In 1946, they relocated to the family farm in Rolfe. Don maintained a special fondness for Guthrie Center, spending many of his childhood summers there with family friends, Amos and Norine Twedt. He attended Des Moines Township (DMT) country school where he enjoyed learning the 3 Rs and playing baseball and basketball. Don transferred to Rolfe Community High School for his junior and senior years where he played football. After graduation, he served in the U. S. Army, stationed in Germany. Later, he worked as a welder in Hartland, WI, and Galveston, TX. In Hartland, he met the love of his life, Sharon Bowe. They married in 1967 and embarked on their journey together, eventually returning to the farm in Rolfe in 1969. This farm was the heart of their lives. Over 56 years, they raised two children, Dan and Mary Ann, who experienced the joys of a free and spirited upbringing on the farm. Don was more than just a farmer. He was an avid conservationist, with a deep-rooted respect for the land and nature. His dedication and passion were recognized with multiple awards from the Pocahontas County Conservation Board, where he served diligently for many years, notably winning the Wildlife Habitat award in 1980 and 1995. He also received the Iowa Wildlife Farmer of the Year award in 1987 from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Additionally, Don enjoyed riding Harleys and was a skilled trap shooter, winning the Top Gun award three times. In the community, Don's leadership was felt in multiple areas. He served as the Des Moines Township trustee and an active member of the American Legion, showcasing his commitment to both his local community and his country. Yet, it was his dry, witty humor and his unapologetic nature of doing things his own way that endeared him to many. He was private, reserved, and always true to himself. Preceding him in death were his parents, Edmund and Isabel, and his sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne (Tom) Casstevens. Surviving him are his wife, Sharon; son, Dan (Jen) Savery of Rolfe; daughter, Mary Ann Savery (Mo McCarthy) of Phoenix; and grandchildren, Sawyer Savery and Sydney Savery. Don's life story is one of dedication to family, community, and the land he loved. The community is invited to remember Donald A. Savery. A visitation is scheduled for 9:30 a. m. on Monday, October 9, 2023, at Powers Funeral Home in Rolfe, IA, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a. m.
