It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John "Johnny" Marvin Johnson. Born March 6, 1938, in Ferrum, Virginia, Johnny's life was marked by his faith, a deep commitment to family, a passion for the arts, and a dedication to his work and community. Johnny also loved his country and served in the U. S. Army National Guard as a tank gunner. As a gifted musician, Johnny's melodies resonated far beyond the reach of his hometown. His musical talent, accompanied by an innate creativity, brought joy and inspiration to those fortunate enough to experience his performances. In addition to his musical pursuits, Johnny's artistic sensibilities extended to furniture design, where he created beautifully crafted wood accents that made their way into thousands of homes across America and even into an Academy Award-nominated Steven Spielberg film. When not designing furniture or playing music, Johnny loved to play golf at The Waterfront and Willow Creek golf clubs. His golf skills peaked when he won the member-member tournament at the Waterfront in 1983 - an achievement he was always eager to mention. Prior to starting his career, Johnny attended Ferrum College and continued to support his alma mater throughout his life. Professionally, Johnny served as Vice President & Chief Operating Officer at Cooper Wood Products, where his visionary leadership and commitment to his employees left an indelible mark on the furniture industry. Colleagues and peers always admired his strategic business mind, but Johnny was always most concerned about the welfare of his employees - often giving to them from his own pocket when the need arose. A man of deep faith, Johnny was a devoted follower of Christ, exemplifying his spirituality through his service as a deacon in the church and as a teacher of Bible study. His unwavering commitment to his faith permeated every aspect of his life, leaving a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to share in his spiritual journey. Johnny's family was the cornerstone of his existence, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn, his cherished children, Sara (Brent) and Hunter (Kathryn), and his adored grandchildren, Peter, Jude, and Ryan. His sister, Ethel Carter, stands as a testament to the enduring bonds of family. Johnny was preceded in death by his mother Eva, father Charlie, and siblings Tommy, Ann, Charles, Oliver, Louise, and Jack. In the community, Johnny will be remembered as a gentle soul, known for his kindness, generosity, and caring nature. His warm and welcoming presence was a source of comfort to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Johnny's impact on the lives of others is immeasurable, and his absence leaves a void that can never be filled. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Johnny's memory be made to Rocky Mount Baptist Church or The Crooked Road. Funeral services will be conducted at Rocky Mount Baptist Church, 1:00 p. m. Tuesday, December 5, 2023 with Rev. J. Larry Holland officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.Show more
