"Gilbert "Gil" Ronald Johnston August 15, 1934 - November 19, 2023 Gilbert "Gil" Ronald Johnston, a cherished husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Portland, Oregon, on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the age of 89. Born in Wright City, Oklahoma, Gil's journey took him from the sunny shores of Redondo Beach, California, to the communities of Klamath Falls, Springfield, Corvallis, and eventually to the heart of Portland. After graduating from Klamath Falls High School in 1953 and studying at the University of Oregon, Gil served honorably in the Army National Guard and Reserves for eight years. Gil represented Pacific Power through the 1970s, 1980s and retired from the utility in 1990. In 1992, he represented Milestone Unlimited - a business training and consulting company with his wife, Bernice Johnston - and was elected president of the Portland Executives Association. According to former Executive Director Rick Van Wyngarden, "Of all of Gil's lifetime activities, his membership with the Portland Executives Association was near the top. " In 1954, Gil began his greatest adventure by eloping to Reno with his beloved Bernice Bullard. Their love story, spanning seven decades, was a testament to their unbreakable bond. Gil's life was marked by a series of pioneering choices, from being one of the first to embrace marina life at RiverPlace to being an early adopter of downtown living in Portland. He had a knack for welcoming others into his orbit, leaving a lasting impression with his warm smile, kind words, and the joy he found in simple pleasures. Remembered fondly by his Mirabella neighbors for his kindness and delightful nature, Gil's presence was a source of warmth and joy. His sense of humor and welcoming spirit made lasting friendships, where he was known as the man with the "great smile," always ready with cheerful words. His infectious smile, even shining through his eyes, brought light to many, and his stories of love for being on the water resonated with fellow enthusiasts. Gil leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and joy. He is survived by his wife Bernice; son Mark; sister Margaret; brother Danny; and a community that feels blessed to have known him. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mabel and Chester; sisters Vivian and Jeanetta; and his son Michael. As we bid farewell to Gil, we hold onto the memories of a man who was not just the heart of his family but also a beacon of positivity in his community. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his memory will continue to inspire. "Show more

Terrance Leo Howard was born early Sunday morning at 5:35 a. m. , May 29, 1966; weighing in at 6 pounds and 12. 5 ounces. He was a very quiet baby, and his demands were simple. After much discussion amongst his three siblings,Terry was accepted into the "Dynasty of the Howards. " In 1984 Terry graduated from Woodward Wilson High School (currently known as Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School). Terry loved singing and could play the cornet. While living in Los Angeles, Terry and his siblings would often sing at church. Terry and Stephanie sang at a wedding and people thought they were Bebe and Cece Winans. Everyone that knew Terry knew he was very analytical and had the gift of gab. The very gift that got him in so much trouble in school. He just talked too much! Terry served in the United States Armed Forces as a United States Marine, and he was so proud to share his experiences. He was passionate about being a chef. This would explain why he represented himself as a great barbeque expert for family and friends; calculating how many pieces of meat you could get off one slab of ribs and how to get the most for your money. It was down to a science. . . Needless to say, he truly was the greatest chef. His barbeque, sweet potato pie, macaroni & cheese with crab was bar none. (Can the family say Amen!) He worked in public transportation for twenty-five (25) years. From 1999 until July 2013 Terry was employed by Portland Public Schools Transportation Department/Laidlaw as a Trainer, 3rd Party Tester, Cover Driver, and a Shop Steward. He also operated "light rail" through Tri-Met, and was a union representative serving in several positions. . . Amalgamated Transit Union Division 757. Terry took pride in life. He loved debating about any subject and would challenge you, simply to have the opportunity to strike up a good conversation. Did you know he always declared he was a pastor and talked about tithing and being faithful? In fact, the name of his church was, "The Church of What's Happening Now. " His mom always said to him, "Terry, I think you missed your calling. " A gentle soul who loved to sing and quote poetry. His love for God and His people. That's how Terry will be remembered. . . A person who had a phenomenal, unconditional love for his family and friends, the prides of his life-his children and granddaughter, extended children, including his foster sons who remained connected and affectionally called him "Pops. " We'll never forget his ability to fix anything electronic. Oh yes, and his concerned frustration with his mother who was always forgetting her new password; for the 12th time (MOM!). His cousins, well people often thought they were the brothers, and the brothers were the cousins. So, they were known as the "brother-cousins, cousin-brothers. " This and so much more was our beloved Terry, who was preceded in death by his father: Joe L. Howard, and his beloved 12-month-old son: Marcus Emilo. Surely, those that remain and will keep his memory alive are his daughter: Kara A. Hubbard (Texas), son: TreAustin (Michigan), and granddaughter. His loving mother: Laura Howard and 3 siblings: Stephanie Wyatt, Earl Howard & Tracy Howard. His auntie-mommas: Janice Crosby, Janet Warren, Katherine Roberson, Eleanor Parker and Aunt Joysalayne Parker. His uncle-fathers: Pastor Charles Parker and Pershing Parker; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends galore from various walks of life. We love him, but God loves him best. . . Terry, we release you into the waiting arms of the Lord, and those who have gone on before you. . . Rest easy, we will "See You In the Morning. Morgan Dean Pope - 4/29/37 - 11/3/23 Morgan Dean Pope, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away on November 3, 2023 at the age of 86, at his residence at the Touchmark of the West Hills, Portland, OR. Morgan grew up as an only child, born on April 29, 1937 to Walter Morgan Pope, and Hazel Alice (Sullivan) Pope, in Bagnell, MO. He graduated from the School of the Osage, Lake Ozark, MO, in 1955, then went on to the University of Missouri, where he earned a B. S. in Physics, and met the love of his life, Constance Gayle Clark. Morgan joined the ROTC, and after serving in the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, completed his Masters in Physics and Mathematics from New Mexico Highlands University in 1962. Morgan and Connie married in 1960. They moved to Portland, OR, when Morgan was offered a job at Tektronix, Inc. He worked there for 28 years, first as a physicist and later as manager in research and development. During that time he and Connie raised two sons, Clark and Sean, and made lifelong family friends with many of his co-workers. He took an early retirement and started a consulting company, MDP Associates, working with Portland Development Commission and other agencies doing technology and workforce assessments and working on economic development issues. He joined Portland State University in 1990, wearing a few hats there. Director of University/Industry relations, Associate Dean of Outreach, and a Vice President for the College of Engineering and Computer Science. He retired in 2004, or tried to, but was convinced by the administration to return, and he became instrumental in the planning and completion of the new Engineering Building. It opened in 2006, when Morgan took his 3rd, and final retirement. Whether at school, working, or retired, Morgan had many interests and talents. He learned to fish as a young child with his father and grandfather. He became somewhat obsessed with fly-fishing as an adult, acquiring and building many fishing rods, and tying countless flies. He played several folk instruments, banjo, guitar, mandolin, dulcimer, bodhran, and eventually took to building those too. Other woodworking endeavors included furniture, carved figurines, and lathework. An avid photographer, when the astronomy bug also hit, he built his telescopes with camera attachments, and added the sun and the moon to his favorite photo subjects. A consummate athlete in his younger days, Morgan kept his eye on the ball through the years - coached or refereed his sons' soccer/basketball teams. When grandchildren took up the same sports, he and Connie rarely missed a game, rain or shine. He captained many family adventures, beach trips, ski trips, hiking, fishing, or sailing. Their road trip to the Southwest, and many Missouri and Iowa trips to visit the Pope and Clark families, held fond memories for him and the whole family. Morgan and Connie enjoyed European travel, soaking up the history, museums, architecture, music and natural wonders of other lands. He and Connie both did extensive genealogical research tracing their families back many generations, and visited Sweden, Ireland in search of their past. Morgan and Connie learned more about their Scandinavian heritage through their connection with Nordic NW, (Scandinavian Heritage Society), attending and volunteering at various events, and Morgan served on the board. A longtime supporter of the arts, and social, political, educational & environmental causes, Morgan was a familiar figure at conferences, fundraisers and special events downtown. After moving from inner Portland to an old farmhouse south of Hillsboro, he and Connie spent many years embracing a more rural lifestyle. Much time was spent tending the Pope acreage with its bounty of fruit trees and other produce, the annual cider pressing, acres of mowing, feeding his bluebirds and hummingbirds, watching the hawks and vultures soar, and hunting his most unwanted guests, gophers and voles! He enjoyed the sunrises, sunsets, and on a clear day, the perfect view of Mt Hood and 6 other mountains from their hillside home. He loved folktales, oral and written history, and after retirement, set to writing his own. Short stories and poems about his life, and random philosophical musings. The family is happy to have those writings. It keeps him close. Morgan was a caring son, a loving husband, a devoted father and proud grandfather. He was an enthusiastic mentor and a steadfast friend. Passionate about education, serious about problem solving, opinionated and not afraid to show it, but always ready with a joke and a smile, a shoulder to lean on, or some sage advice. He will be remembered and missed by everyone he touched. Morgan is survived by his wife, Constance Gayle Pope; son Sean Sullivan Pope, son Morgan Clark Pope & daughter-in-law Carrie Frances White, (all of Portland, OR); granddaughter Scout Edie Cohen Pope & Scott Steinhouse (Bellingham WA); grandson Sullivan Cohen Pope & Cascade Hall (Bellingham / Seattle WA). Mary Bardell

Mary Bardell

Age - 80

November 30, 2023

"Mary Joan Bardell, also known as Mary Jo Carpenter, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2023, at the age of 80. 5 in Portland, Oregon. She was a Taurus, born just after midnight on April 28, 1943, in Rapid City, South Dakota, to the late Edna Luella Speer Carpenter and John Griffith Carpenter. When she was a wee baby her family moved from South Dakota to Oregon, living in Portland, Dexter, and Port Orford. Mary Jo served in the Navy from 1961 to 1968 and was proud to be associated with the military. She pursued a career in the medical field, starting in the Medical Corps of the U. S. Navy in Chelsea, Massachusetts. She then continued her nursing career at Gold Beach Hospital, and later worked in medical records at Newberg Hospital and Meridian Park Hospital in Oregon. Following a major car accident, involving her cherished MGB convertible, Mary Jo relocated to Newberg to live with Jesse and Dorothy Bales who helped her to convalesce and find solace and community at the Newberg Friends Church and George Fox College. She continued to value her faith and the spiritual connections she made within the church for the following six decades. She met her future husband John on a blind date at a bowling alley where, legend has it, she threw all 12 strikes - perfect score of 300. He was so enraptured by her athletic skills and competitive prowess that he put a ring on it 9 months later. Together, John and Mary raised their family and planted their gardens in the red hills of Dundee, Oregon, and they had a simply beautiful life until John's untimely passing in 2002. If you had known her then you would have likely loved her authentic personality: Mary Jo was an eccentric and quick-witted individual who embraced each day with humor and intellect. She was brutally honesty and had strong opinions, always ready to engage in a spirited debate - adding spiciness to many a holiday dinner. She was known to be a bit stubborn and stuck to her opinions like glue, however she also respected the choices and beliefs of others. She mellowed out in her twilight years and became her best self: charming, confident, thoughtful, and optimistic. With a love for vibrant colors, art, and music, Mary Jo was a true student of the world. She had a penchant for collecting antiques and visiting estate sales, garage sales, and Goodwill like she was on a treasure hunt. With a passion for genealogy that was shared with her sister, she spent countless hours researching family history and visiting cemeteries all over the world. Other guilty pleasures included reading raunchy romance novels, teaching others how to garden, playing solitaire like a boss, savoring wine and coffee with chocolate croissants and cinnamon buns, never missing an opportunity to visit Wendy's for a tasty burger, and checking in with @mrs_trufflepig on Insta for decorating inspiration. In her early years, she enjoyed traveling, exploring different cultures, and watching foreign films with subtitles. In addition, she had a deep love for animals, including her ginger cats and fluffy poodles. If asked to be quoted for her own obituary, she would have asked those of us left behind "to love one another, be grateful for each day, and only buy 100% cotton underwear. " So, here's to you Mary Jo - the world is less bright without your sass and laughter, but we will carry on! Mary Jo leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished family members. She is survived by her loving daughters: Jennifer Bardell and her partner Joe Cathey; and Jessica West and her husband Matthew West. Her loving grandchildren, Samantha West and Nicholas West, also mourn her passing. Mary Jo will be dearly missed by her nieces, Cindy Wagner, Leesa Cobb, and Tami Corson, and by her nephews, Michael Riley Sgagna and Steven Wagner, and by her brother Jerry Carpenter. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Bardell, and her sister, Bonnie Wagner, and brothers John Carpenter and Bill Carpenter, among others. A Celebration of Life in honor of Mary Jo Bardell will be held at Attrell's Funeral Chapel in Newberg, Oregon, on December 16, 2023, at 11am. In memory of Mary Jo and her love for animals, contributions can be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). "Show more
