Grace E. "Peg" Commerer, 93, of Shippensburg, PA passed away Monday, September 11, 2023 at Shippensburg Rehab and Healthcare Center. Born June 10, 1930 in Shippensburg she was the daughter of the late George R. and Elsie E. Porter Shannon. She was employed as a seamstress at the former Greif Pants Company, Shippensburg. Peg was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church, Shippensburg; AARP, and the Wood Carver Club of Shippensburg. She is survived by her son, Jack L. Ordway and his wife Linda of Chambersburg; two grandsons, Chad M. Ordway of Chambersburg, PA and Dr. Ryan S. Ordway and his wife Melissa of New York; four great-grandchildren Abby, Amaya, Liam, and Landon; two siblings, Bonita Gutshall and Terry Shannon; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, William K. Commerer who passed away April 27, 2008; a son, Timothy Commerer; and two siblings, Ronald E. Shannon and Janet "Louise" Fridinger. A memorial service will held 11:00 AM Saturday, September 30, 2023 in Memorial Lutheran Church, 34 E. Helen F. Hykes, 94, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Monday, December 4, 2023, at the Shippensburg Health Care Center. She was born on December 29, 1928, in New Cumberland, a daughter of the late Calvin L. and Anna (Rothrock) Faust. Helen was a 1946 graduate of New Cumberland High School. She married Robert M. Hykes, Jr. , in January of 1952. He preceded her in death on October 30, 1996. Early in life, Helen worked at Fishers Florist, Shippensburg, prior to having her two sons. Afterward she became a consummate homemaker taking care of her family in all ways. Helen was a very active, longtime member of the Messiah United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School for many years and was the founding director of the Junior Choir which she led for twenty-five years. Helen was also an integral part of Camp Penn, Waynesboro, for over twenty-five years. It was where she met her husband, Robert, and together became the summer managers, spending lots of time there with their family. It became a very special place and important part of her life. She is survived by two sons, John R. Hykes of Shippensburg, and David A. Hykes and wife Diane of Waynesboro; a granddaughter, Amanda S. Davis and husband Taylor of Hagerstown, MD; three great grandchildren, Avery, Grace, and Robert Davis, all of Hagerstown, MD; and several nieces. In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. Her funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. , Shippensburg. Her graveside service will be held at 11:00 a. m. , on Friday, December8, 2023, at the Spring Hill Cemetery. There will be no public viewing or visitation. Barbara Ann Mathna, 77, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Monday, December 4, 2023, at the WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital. She was born on April 21, 1946, in Birmingham, England, a daughter of the late Harry Mathna and Irene R. (Gough) Russell Trace and was a 1964 graduate of Shippensburg Area High School. Barbara held many jobs at several different companies throughout her life, but her favorite was working as a housekeeper for the late H. Ric Luhrs. In her free time she enjoyed sitting in the sun, reading, and playing on her iPad. Being born in England, Barbara had a fondness for drinking hot tea. She always enjoyed traveling, especially trips to the beach. Barbara also loved spending time with her family and friends, which was very important to her. She is survived by her step-father, Kenneth Trace of Fayetteville; daughter, Nicole Rotz and husband Tony of Shippensburg; granddaughter, Kalea Rotz of Shippensburg; grandson, Nicholas Yohe and wife Jordyn of Shippensburg; four great grandchildren, Mila, Harlow, Monroe, and Lennon; her sister, Suzanne Hurd and husband Roger of Greencastle; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Barbara was preceded in death by her biological parents and a niece Michelle "Shelly" Keppley. Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 a. m. , on Friday, December 8, 2023, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. , Shippensburg. Pastor William Smith will officiate. Rodney A. Barthalow, 51, of Shippensburg, PA, died Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Mercy House in Chambersburg, PA. He was born on January 26, 1972 in the Chambersburg Hospital to the late Lilly Anna Mae Pool. Rodney's life-long passion was volunteer fire-fighting. He began as a teenager at West End Fire and Rescue Co. in Shippensburg, PA. He volunteered at numerous fire companies all throughout Franklin County, the most recent being at St. Thomas Township Volunteer Fire and Rescue in St. Thomas, PA. Rodney's other passions were playing the guitar, rock music, and anything about the Civil War - especially The Battle of Gettysburg. He is survived by four children: Ciera R. (Kyle) Peck, Carol A. Barthalow, Jacob A. E. Barthalow and companion Savannah Wood, and Lisa A. M. Barthalow and companion Puru H. Shah. As well as three grandchildren: Lilly A. M. Pensinger, Evelynne R. Peck, and Westlee G. Peck. In addition to his mother, Rodney was proceeded in death by two stillborn children, Alicia A. Barthalow and Jonathan M. Barthalow. The family would like to express their gratitude to Mercy House of Chambersburg for the excellent end-of-life care Rodney received. Oscar J. Koontz, Jr. , 90, of Shippensburg, passed away the evening of Saturday, November 25, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Wednesday, April 19, 1933 in Shippensburg, a son of the late Oscar J. and Lula V. (Willis) Koontz, Sr. Oscar was a 1951 graduate of the Shippensburg High School and a 1962 graduate of the Shippensburg State Teachers College, where he earned a double Master's degree in Education and Counseling. He was employed by the Big Spring School District as a school counselor. Oscar was a member of the Cumberland Valley Lodge #315 F. & A. M. , Valley Forest #145 Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Shippensburg Scottish Rite Club, and PA School of Retirees. He is survived by three sons, Oscar J. Koontz III and his companion Yvonne Harman of Shippensburg, David M. Koontz and his wife Wanda of Shippensburg, and Troy A. Koontz and his wife Mary of Artemas; two daughters, Rebecca L. Ross and her partner Rick Reath of Shippensburg, and Cheryl S. Rine and her husband Thomas of Orrstown; nine grandchildren, Jeremy Kelso and his wife Michelle, Samantha Mowery and her husband Chad, Brian Smith and his wife Anne, David Koontz, Jr. and his wife Ashley, Stephanie Heffernan and her husband Matt, Megan Raymond and her husband Alex, Justin Hoover and his wife Stephanie, Jarret Rine and his partner Kaylyn Hepfer, and Mitchell Rine; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred P. (Butts) Koontz, who passed away on November 26, 2014. Also preceding in death are nine brothers and three sisters. L. Max Hutchison, Jr. , 92, of Shippensburg, passed away the evening of Friday, November 24, 2023 at the Chambersburg Hospital. He was born on April 15, 1931 in Orbisonia PA, Huntingdon County, a son of the late L. Max and Lois V. Conner Hutchison, Sr. He married N. Joan Steninger Hutchison on July 6, 1954. She preceded him in death on July 6, 2011. Max graduated from the former Captain Jack High School in Mt. Union. After high school, he obtained a degree in Dairy Husbandry from The Pennsylvania State University. In his earlier years, he assisted his father in the operation of the family farm, Shirley-Ayr Farms in Mt. Union. Following his years in farming, he moved to Shippensburg where he was the owner and operator of Fisher's Florist & Greenhouse for 29 years, until retiring in 1996. Max was a faithful member of the First Assembly of God in Shippensburg, where he was an active worship leader and Sunday School teacher. Above all else, Max was a faithful husband, father, and grandfather, who cherished his children and grandchildren. He is survived by three sons, J. Mark (Cindy) Hutchison of Palmyra, Paul B. (Regina) Hutchison of Shippensburg, and Timothy S. (Stacy) Hutchison of Shippensburg; two daughters, Anne E. Hutchison of Shippensburg, and Ruth E. (Jonathan) Stough of Mechanicsburg; eight grandchildren, Emily (Joe) Trace, Alycia Furry, Brian (Chelsea) Hutchison, Kaitlin Coy, Logan (Aimee) Hutchison, Luke Hutchison, Harrison Stough, and Jackson Stough; and 11 great-grandchildren, Graelyn, Ethan, Noah, Lily, Laila, Micah, Lana, Lochlan, Finley, Ellie, and Graham. In addition to his parents and spouse, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Maxine Wallett, Marjorie Kepner, Richard Hutchison, and Joanne Carroll. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at 11:00 a. m. at the First Assembly of God, Shippensburg. Pastor Timothy Beitzel and Mr. Dan Summers will officiate. Burial will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. The Reverend Eugene H. Moore, Pastor Emeritus of Bender Evangelical Lutheran Church, Biglerville, PA, died November 11, 2023 at Chambersburg Hospital. His wife, Norma Jean (nee Hasselberg) of Irwin, PA, to whom he had been married for 67 years, predeceased him, dying August 15, 2021. He was the son of Ralph Woods Moore and Vernie Mae (nee Boltz) Moore, natives of Cowansville, PA and the grandson of the late Rev. John F. Moore of Kittanning, PA, missionary for the American Sunday School Union. Pastor Moore is survived by four children; Christopher Moore and wife, Connie of Gettysburg, Philip Moore and wife, Gem of Biglerville, Patricia Beamer and husband, Robert of Biglerville, and Kathleen Sanders and husband, Kevin of Aspers. He has eight grandchildren, Jessica Spotswood and her husband, Stephen of Washington, D. C. , Amber Emanuel of Gainesville, FL, Shannon Moore of Westminster, MD, Amy Bair and husband, Jason of Irishtown, Daniel Moore, Sr. and wife, Amanda of Hanover, Ted Beamer of Gretna, LA, Zach Beamer of Biglerville and Jeremy Sanders of Boise, ID. He has eight great-grandchildren; Jared, Carrie, Caeley and Jackson Bair of Irishtown, and Nevaeh, Nicole, Natalie and Danny, Jr. Moore of Hanover. Pastor Moore was born on January 6, 1930 in Petrolia, PA. He lived in Armstrong and Clarion Counties as a child and teenager graduating from Kittanning High School in 1948. After High School, he operated and worked as a job printer in a home printing business named Houdini's Print Shop. As a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians he entertained professionally as "Moore, the Master Magician" which he continued during his college days and following graduation from college. In September of 1949, he entered Indiana State Teachers College (now The Indiana University of Pennsylvania). He graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science in Education with a double major in Chemistry and Biology and a minor in Physics. While attending college, Moore was active in theatrical and chorus productions. He served as photographer for the student newspaper and was a member of the varsity wrestling team. He was elected to the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity where he served as Vice-President, House Manager, Social Chairman and Pledge Master. While attending college, he also worked as a job press printer for Henry Hall Corporation of Indiana, PA. Moore was active in the Boy Scouts of America and an honorary Scout Organization, The Order of the Arrow. He earned Scouting's highest rank by becoming an Eagle Scout. He was also awarded the Silver Chief Award for his work in the Order of the Arrow locally and as Secretary for the north eastern section of Pennsylvania coordinating activities for the nine lodges of the Order in that area. He worked summers as a member of the staff for Camp Bucoco, serving Butler and Armstrong Counties. He also served two years as Woodcraft Director for the National Training School for Junior Scout leaders in Mendham, NJ. Upon graduation from college in 1953, Moore enrolled in the National Training School for Professional Boy Scout Leaders, held at Schiff Scout Reservation in Mendham, NJ. He was commissioned as a District Scout Executive serving the Jeannette/Irwin area of the Westmoreland Fayette Council located in Greensburg, PA. He was then transferred to the Colonel Drake Council in Oil City where he served as District Executive of the Scouting program in Clarion County. He was promoted to Erie, PA where he served as Assistant Scout Executive supervising the work of five District Executives serving the program in Erie and Crawford Counties. Moore left Scouting and became a Professional Representative for Merck, Sharpe and Dohme Pharmaceuticals, a division of Merck Company. He supervised a territory in central Pennsylvania including territory from State College west to Brookville and north to the New York State line at Bradford, PA. In 1972, Pastor Moore enrolled as a student at The Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg where he became one of two students who entered the "second career" program for individuals who had graduated a number of years earlier and worked in secular work for a period of time. Moore was one of two such persons in his class and had worked 20 years since graduating from College. In his third year under the direction of Pastor Ziegler of Arendtsville, Moore served as an Intern of Bender Evangelical Lutheran church, Biglerville. In 1975, he graduated from Lutheran Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity Degree. At the age of 45, he was ordained in 1975 and began his ministry as pastor of Bender Evangelical Lutheran Church of Biglerville where he served for 13 years. During this time, he served as Dean of the Gettysburg conference several times. He served as a member of the Synod committee of Professional Preparation which supervised the examination of persons wishing to enter the clerical training in seminaries. He also served as the Chairperson of the Senate Committee of Deans. After leaving Bender Evangelical, Pastor Moore accepted a call to serve churches in Perry County. He served two Lutheran churches, Christ Evangelical in New Bloomfield and the Mannsville Lutheran Church in Mannsville. During the time that he served those two churches, he also served as Dean of the Perry Conference. While serving as Dean, he also served as interim for St. John and Barrons, two churches located near Liverpool. He accepted a call to be Synod Administrator for Trinity Lutheran located in Mount Holly Springs. He served in that position until 1995 when he retired. After retiring, he continued to serve a number of churches as interim pastor and supply pastor. In these positions, he conducted services and preached in every Lutheran church in Adams County. He also served as interim pastor of churches in Franklin and Cumberland Counties. Professional services have been entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc. , 111 S. Main Street, Bendersville. A Memorial Service of Holy Communion will be held on November 22, 2023 at 10AM at Bender Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1385 Rentzel Road, Biglerville, PA 17307. Remembering Genesis 3:19, "By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return", Pastor Moore will be cremated. Interment of his ashes will take place at Camp Maple Tree in Elk County, PA, at the convenience of the family.
