Jeffrey B. Lasanen, age 50, of Defiance, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on February 27, 2024. He was born on February 28, 1973 to Dennis and Janet (Brewer) Lasanen in Saginaw, MI. Jeff was a 1991 graduate of Heritage High School in Saginaw Township, MI. He completed his undergraduate education at Taylor University in 1994. He continued his education at Bowling Green State University where he earned his Master’s degree in 1995. He also earned a Master’s degree from Defiance College. Jeff worked as a reporter/writer for the Crescent-News, was a replenishment coordinator for Hickory Farms, and a substitute teacher at area schools. He was the head teacher of the Sunday College and Career class at First Baptist Church. In high school, Jeff was a member of the Youth for Christ High Priority singing group and played tennis. While at Taylor University, he sang in both the Taylor University Chorale and the Salt and Light group and served as a discipleship coordinator at Swallow Robin Hall. Jeff had a great love for the Lord and was a light to those around him. He was an avid sports fan of the University of Michigan and the Detroit Tigers. Jeff is survived by his father, Dennis Lasanen of Defiance, OH; sisters, Julie (Mark) Schumm of Van Wert, OH, and Debbie (Ryan) Clark of Clyde, OH; aunts, Verna Babula of Sterling Heights, MI and Victoria (Al) Craigie of Indiana, PA; nieces Lauren Schumm and Lindsey Schumm; nephews, Justin Clark, Jacob Schumm, Andrew Clark, and Jayden Clark. He was preceded in death by his mother, Janet Lasanen; maternal grandparents Edward and Mildred Brewer; and paternal grandparents Frank and Lillian Lasanen. Visitation will be held Friday, March 8, 2024, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson/Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton St.) in Defiance. James W. Goedde

James W. Goedde, 90, of Defiance, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Friday, March 1, 2024, at CHP Defiance Area Hospice Inpatient Center. Jim who was affectionately known by many as just "Goedde" was born on April 6, 1933, to Raymond and Alta (Geren) Goedde in Defiance, Ohio. He was a 1951 Defiance High School graduate. After graduation Jim proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War on the USS Iowa. He then attended the Fort Wayne International Business College. On March 17, 1972, he married Kathleen Scofield, who survives. "Goedde" was the Office Manager for Bolley Motor Sales in Defiance, and after his retirement Jim worked with Phil Kerr Motor Sales, Ron Heller Motor Sales, and Schaffer Funeral Home, all of Defiance. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Life Member of Defiance Elks, Defiance Eagles, and New Bavaria VFW, a member of AmVets Post 1991, Jewell American Legion, and the USS Iowa Association. Jim also was the recipient of the Defiance Elks Elk of the Year award 1997-1998. James is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Kathleen Goedde of Defiance, daughter, Kristine M. (Jason) Walters of Defiance, and his grandson, Timothy (Morghin) Walters of Defiance. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, from 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, with a vigil service at 2:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 11:00 am at the funeral home, with Father John Stites and Pastor Alan Fuhrhop officiating. Virginia Lee Herr, age 92, of Defiance, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2024, at her home in Defiance, OH. She was born on April 16, 1931, to the late Otheo and Anna (Lehman) English in Defiance, OH. Ginny was a 1949 graduate of Defiance High School. On July 2, 1949, she married Joseph W. Herr, who precedes her in death. Ginny was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was her first priority in anything that she did. Ginny was especially fond of springtime when she could enjoy nature and bird watching. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church. Ginny was an avid reader and received regular deliveries from the Defiance Public Library. She enjoyed playing Scrabble/Words with Friends and cards, especially Pinochle. Ginny was a wonderful cook and baker. Virginia is survived by her children, Joseph A. (Sara) Herr of Ashland, KY, Barbara L. (Ric) Homier, Timothy L (Toni) Herr and Rick D. Herr, all of Defiance, and Rebecca S. Norbert H. “Nub” Ruen CONTINENTAL – Norbert H. “Nub” Ruen, 88, of Continental, passed away at 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2024 at Brookview Healthcare Center, Defiance. He was born April 11, 1935, in Deshler to the late Anthony A. and Mary E. (Breece) Ruen. On August 6, 1978, he married Norma Jean Steel, who preceded him in death on November 13, 2022. Norbert is survived by three stepchildren: Gary (Mary) Brown of Holgate, Dennis (Penny) Brown of FL and Deb (John) Seely of Montpelier; six grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Jim Ruen; and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Clarence “Peewee” (Connie) Schreiber. Norbert loved his hometown and was the former manager for the Ruen-Etter Trailer Court, Continental. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Continental. Norbert was a hardworking man, who helped raise three kids when he didn’t have to. He always made sure there was food for his kids and pets to love, especially ponies and puppies. He loved camping, trapping, playing cards, but most of all, he loved pull tickets. Norbert fought through some major health issues, making us call him the “comeback kid.” He loved his family, brothers, sister, mother and stepfather immensely. He was especially close to his nieces, Toni Jones and Roxie Knipp, who were by his side through his last days. He will be missed by many. Fly high, Dad, we love you. Funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental with Pastor Terry Porter officiating. Edith Marie Wagner, 98 years of West Unity, passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice, Defiance. Edith was born February 24, 1926, in Center Township, Williams County, Ohio, the daughter of the late Henry J. and Grace M. (Harter) Hire. She was a 1944 graduate of Bryan High School and continued her education at Warner Beauty College in Fort Wayne. Edith was preceded in death by all three of her husbands, Thomas Royal, Lewis Prouty, and Kermit Wagner. A beautician by trade, Edith began her career as a hairdresser at the former Brace Beauty Salon. She later opened her own shop, Edith’s Beauty Shop, where she worked until her retirement in 1978. Edith was a member of the Bryan First Church of Christ where she was active in the Mary-Martha Circle as well as the Senior Saints group. She was also a member of the Eastern Star where she was a member for 50 years, West Unity American Legion Post 669 Ladies Auxiliary as well as the Jefferson Rural Garden Club. Edith enjoyed gardening, reading, working on crafts, needlepoint and sewing. Surviving are her four children, Steve (Anna Mae) Royal of Liberty Center, Tom (Marilyn) Royal of West Unity, Linda Miller of West Unity, and Marie (Dan) Snow of Williams Center; eight grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands; stepdaughter, Janet Dunbar; two sisters, Patricia Ann Hire and Norma Stambaugh. Visitation for Edith Marie Wagner will be held Wednesday, March 6, 2024, from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 202 North Liberty Street, West Unity. Nancy L. Gribler, a beloved member of the Van Wert community, passed away peacefully, on February 29, 2024, at CHP Inpatient Hospice in Defiance while surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Van Wert, Ohio, on December 10, 1947, to her late parents, Loran and Ruth (Miller) Joseph. On June 24, 1967, Nancy married the love of her life, Karl Gribler. Together they shared nearly 57 years of marriage. Nancy was a dedicated professional who held various roles throughout her career, working in offices at Van Wert AAA, Teleflex, Van Wert Times-Bulletin, and Lee Kinstle Sales & Service. Even after retirement, she continued to contribute by working part-time in the Van Wert County Fair Office.A proud graduate of Van Wert High School from the class of 1966, Nancy held a special place in her heart for her alma mater. She passionately supported the Cougars, especially the band, cheerleaders, basketball, and football teams. Her involvement extended beyond cheering; Nancy actively participated as a band booster officer and volunteered for numerous activities such as band camps, concession stands, fair booths, and chaperoning football game trips.Beyond her professional and educational endeavors, Nancy's true joys in life revolved around family and community engagement. She dedicated much of her time to supporting her daughters' school activities and serving as a volunteer for the PTO to help run Bingo during the annual school penny suppers. Nancy took great delight in attending her grandchildren's sports events and school functions.In her leisure time, Nancy found pleasure in playing Bingo, shopping trips, attending the Van Wert County Fair, and engaging with organizations such as TWIGS and the American Legion Auxiliary. Her commitment to service extended to volunteering at the thrift shop and assisting with funeral dinners through the American Legion Auxiliary.Nancy was a lifelong member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church where she served on the altar guild, was Sunday School director for many years and helped with Vacation Bible School.Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Karl of Van Wert; daughters: Brenda Frankart of Findlay, Susie (Brad) Sanderson of Van Wert; grandchildren: Shannette (Dalton) Thomas of Paulding, Ethan Frankart of Findlay, Chelsea Sanderson of Van Wert, Courtney (Ryan) Thompson of Van Wert; McKenzey Sanderson of Van Wert; great-grandchildren: Lilly, Grayson, Lincoln Thomas of Paulding; Elena Thompson of Van Wert.In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her brother, Larry Joseph.Services to honor Nancy Gribler's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory, 722 S Washington St, Van Wert, OH 45891, with Rev Will Haggis presiding. Margaret A. "Peggy" Ramey, age 77 of Defiance, peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at Brookview Healthcare Center in Defiance. She was born on March 19, 1946 to the late Paul and Margrate (Boday) Plummer in Defiance, Ohio. Margaret was married for 20 years to Jerry Ramey, who preceded her in death. Margaret was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and Defiance Eagles #372. She had a passion for sewing and owned and operated the Defiance Sewing Center for several years. Spending time with her family was always her priority and she loved being with her grandchildren. Margaret was an avid reader, she loved gardening, her flower beds, and she bowled in multiple bowling leagues in the area, earning her status in the Defiance Women's 500 Club. Margaret will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Margaret is survived by her children, Tammy (Michael) Hoffman, Bonnie Dorsey, and Jeff (Angie) Goldenetz, all of Defiance, Fran Ramey of Red Bay, AL, Coleen (Shaun) Fulk of Stryker, OH, and Debra (James) Newcomb of Clifton, TN, 23 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, her brother, Carey (Brenda) Plummer of Napoleon, OH, and her sister, Nancy Oberhaus of West Unity, OH. Betty M. Dunlap age 96 of Defiance, peacefully passed into the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at Trustwell Kingsbury Place. She was born on November 6, 1927 to the late John and Ethel (Edwards) Sanderson in Paulding County, Ohio. On December 2, 1943 she married Calvin Dunlap, who preceded her in death on October 6, 2000. Betty was a faithful member of Defiance Christian Church. She was an avid musician and was an accomplished organist, pianist, and she played the accordion. She loved her time spent playing for Sunday Worship Services at several area churches, and in the band "Country Charmers". She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who dedicated her life to her family, and she faithfully prayed for each one. Betty is survived by her daughters, Anna Marie Huebner of Sherwood, OH and Alicia (John) Mengerink of Defiance, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Calvin, brothers, Clyde, Harold, Kenneth, John, Paul and Furl Sanderson, her sister Pearl Winters, granddaughter Charlene Huebner, and great-granddaughter Henley Mengerink. Emma Kay Maddock, age 77 of Defiance, passed away on Monday morning, February 26, 2024. She was born on November 27, 1946, to John and Loretta (Lutz) Drennan in Medina, Ohio. On November 29, 1968, she married Roger Maddock who survives. Emma grew up in Elyria Ohio. She got her bachelor’s degree from BGSU in Education and worked as a teacher at Ft Jennings Elementary School. She learned to swim as an adult and pursued enough skills to become a lifeguard and manager at Ayersville Natatorium. She studied accounting and worked as an accountant before earning her master’s degree and working as a Mental Health Counselor. She was an active and faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church. She as a member of the St. John Choir and Bible Study Group. She enjoyed playing violin in the Black Swamp Community Orchestra and spent her leisure time quilting, gardening, reading, and baking. Emma was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Emma is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Roger Maddock of Defiance, her children Amy (Randy) Fletcher of Perrysburg OH, Jason (Jennifer) Maddock, and Ben (Regina) Maddock, all of Defiance, nine grandchildren, and her sister Deanna Moore of Texas. Maurice "Mo" Thornell, 76, of Convoy, passed away Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Defiance Inpatient Hospice CenterMo was born in Paulding on November 7, 1947, a son of the late Norma (Long) & Arnold Thornell.Mo was a 1966 graduate of Crestview High School. He went on to bravely serve his country in the United States Army until 1972. Mo retired from Aeroquip after 38 years. He was also a member of Trinity Friends Church in Van Wert, and the NRA. In his free time, Mo enjoyed spending time with his family. His granddaughters could always count on him cheering them on at all their extracurricular activities. He also enjoyed to hunt and fish with his son, and always loved tinkering in his woodshop. Mo was one of the sweetest, loving, and gentlest souls. He always had a smile on his face and never knew a stranger. He was the epitome of what a loving husband, father, brother, and papa should be. You could always count on him saying, "yeah right, Rose," or " Why have a bad day when you could have a good one."
