Gloria Najera, 80, of 1408 Hill St. Carlsbad, NM, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother passed away peacefully Thursday, September 7, 2023 at home surrounded by her children and family. The vigil will be held Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at 6:00 pm at Denton-Wood Funeral Home with Deacon Manny Chavez reciting. Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 10:00 am at the San Jose Catholic Church. Fr. Juan Carlos will be the celebrant. Interment will follow at the Carlsbad Cemetery in Carlsbad, NM. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Gloria Najera was born June 6, 1943 in Carlsbad, NM to Antonio Hernandez and Juana Jasso Hernandez. She met and married the love of her life, Jose (Chompi) Najera on January 1961. They made Carlsbad their home and she has 3 children, Suzy, Joey and Bonnie who all reside in Carlsbad. In the early years she enjoyed being with the family camping in the Queens, especially during the Easter holidays and the Holy Ghost Campgrounds. Gloria enjoyed cooking as wells as going to casinos, dancing and gathering together with friends and family at her home or theirs for celebrations. Gloria worked at St Francis Hospital known then as Guadalupe Medical Center for 30 years as a work clerk and nurse aide until she became disabled and retired. Gloria enjoyed Bingo and painting her figurines. Gloria helped raise all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as her own and other children, including Jack Hernandez, who adopted her as a mother/grandmother. Gloria was an extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother and mother figure who will be dearly missed by many in the community and will never be forgotten. You can rest now Mom and enjoy being with Dad, gazing down from Heaven and looking over the family you helped create, while your children return the love you gave to us with hugs and kisses. Gloria was preceded in death by her husband Chompi Najera, parents Antonio and Juana Hernandez, sisters Juanita Valdez, Lily Acosta, bother Shutters Hernandez. Survivors include 3 children Suzy Najera and companion Victor Mendoza, Joey Najera and wife Shannon, and Bonnie Najera, all the children live in Carlsbad, NM. There are 9 grandchildren, 23 great grand-children, 4 great-great grandchildren, sisters Pauline (Tito) Biscaino, Celina Hernandez/Martin Campos, brothers Epimanuel (Bob) Hernandez and wife Betty, Antonio (Chooky) Hernandez and wife Mary and numerous sister/brother in-laws, along with nieces/nephews from the Hernandez/Najera familia. Pallbearers will be the grandchildren Rudy Marquez, Samantha Marquez, Trine Carrasco III, Keono Orgain, Jurias Dominquez, Ciara Najera. Honorary Pallbearers will be Eric Marquez, Jorge Herrera, Estrella Herrera and great-grandkids. The family will have a meal following the burial at the San Jose Church Hall. Margarita "Rita" Chavez, 73, of Grandi Road, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Monday, December 4, 2023 in Albuquerque, NM. Visitation will be 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM, Monday, December 11, 2023 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Rosary will be recited at 9:30 AM, Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at San Jose Catholic Church followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM, with Fr. Juan Carlos Ramirez officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, NM. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Rita was born February 15, 1950 in Carlsbad, NM to Alfredo and Manuela (Munoz) Franco. She graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1968 and continued her education at Eastern New Mexico University where she earned a bachelor’s and master’s in education. Rita married David Chavez August 10, 1974. She taught school in Loving and Carlsbad, retiring after 29 years of teaching. Rita embraced every role in her life with unmatched love and dedication. As a wife, she was the epitome of compassion and grace, and as a mother, she was the unwavering pillar of strength and love. Her children and her grandchildren were her world. She poured every ounce of her being into nurturing and guiding them, ensuring that she never missed a game, recital, or special occasion, leaving her legacy of love, laughter, and treasured memories. Rita's impact extended beyond her family, as she was a dear friend, a respected teacher at the schools and in her church, and a source of kindness and warmth for all who knew her. Known affectionately as Ms. Chavez, she left an indelible mark on the lives of her students, imparting knowledge, wisdom, compassion, and resilience. Her words, "un dia a la vez," (one day at a time), were not just a phrase but a philosophy she embodied every day and is how we will all get through this together. Today we celebrate a life beautifully lived, a life that touched and enriched the hearts of her loved ones and all who were fortunate enough to experience her presence. Rita was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Lorraine Chavez and granddaughter, Hannah Chavez. Survivors are her husband, David Chavez; children: Gabriel Chavez and wife, Cynthia, Monica Chavez, Jeremy Chavez and wife, Veronica, Angelica Chavez and Elizabeth Chavez and Daniel Calderon; 17 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; sisters: Cesilia Medrano and husband, Rafael, Juanita Jojola and husband, Billy; brother, Alfredo Franco, and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Anthony Chavez, Nicholas Brown, Jase Chavez, Jarren Villa, Arion Lopez and Zachary Ramirez. Peggy Jean Hawks, 78, of Carlsbad, NM passed away on Monday, November 20, 2023, at the Carlsbad Medical Center. Peggy was born on September 20, 1945, in Elizabethton, TN to Woodrow and Hannah Hansford. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 AM Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Pastor Sam Plumlee officiating. Peggy moved to Carlsbad in 2010. She was always on the go and would volunteer her time and efforts anywhere she could. She also worked as a class Grandma at Monterrey Elementary School for many years, and she also currently worked as a senior companion. Peggy loved working on different crafts, such as gnomes, snowflakes, crosses, and flower wreaths. She was also a faithful member of the Hillcrest Baptist church, where she helped teach Sunday school classes. Most certainly, her pride and joy were her family. She loved spending time with them. She was always smiling and always happy: to know her was to love her. She will be dearly missed and never forgotten. Peggy was preceded in death by her father, Woodrow Jefferson Hansford; mother, Hannah Eveline (Norris) Hansford; two children: Shane Bailey and Veronica Taylor; and son-in-law, Dale Taylor. Ronald D. Rainwater, 80, of Carlsbad, NM passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the Carlsbad Medical Center. Ronald was born on October 7, 1943, in Artesia, NM to Sterling and Maggie Rainwater. Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service is scheduled for 10:00 AM Saturday, December 9, 2023, at the Carlsbad Cemetery with Pastor Gary Davis officiating. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of making arrangements. After high school, Ronald joined the United States Air Force, and faithfully served several years during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged, he came back to Carlsbad and started working at the Living Desert State Park during its formative years. He was able to help on the ground work in getting the State Park up and running. He would always bring some kind of animal home with him, keeping his family guessing who would be visiting. Ronald loved woodworking, scrolling intricate projects, drinking his iced tea, being strong willed, and caring for his Siamese cats. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and he will be dearly missed. Ronald was preceded in death by his father, Sterling Rainwater; mother, Maggie (Younger) Rainwater; wife, Margie Rainwater; son, Jerry Croley; great grandson, Caleb Rainwater; two brothers, Stanley Rainwater, and twin Don Rainwater; and 3 sisters, Winnie Stockton, Marlene Weisheit, and Sue Rupe. Elsie "Biscuits" "Bertha" Williams, age 67, of Carlsbad, NM, passed away on November 28, 2023, in Las Cruces, NM. Elsie was born on June 12, 1956, in Carlsbad. She graduated from Carlsbad High School and went on to receive her associate's degree in nursing in 1996. Elsie worked as an LPN at Good Samaritans in Artesia before moving to Las Cruces. In Las Cruces, she worked at Casa Del Sol, Mountain Shadow, and Home Care INC of Donna Ana. Elsie was actively involved in her church, Living Waters, where she served as the food coordinator and contributed her time and efforts in various other capacities. She had a giving nature and a huge heart, always willing to help others. Elsie cherished her family, friends, and church family, and had a special place in her heart for her "other family" including Katrina, Shirley, Nadia, Tiffany, and Justice. Her husband, Walter B. Wilson, was her superhero who stood by her side through sickness and in health. She leaves behind an amazing husband of 34 years, Walter B. Wilson; her one and only daughter, Trishella, and favorite son-in-law, Jeremy; sons: Marcello Williams and daughter-in-law Sunni of Roswell, Maurice Williams and daughter-in-law Angela of Carlsbad, James Williams and daughter-in-law Augusta of Alamo; first-born grandchildren: Quincy Williams, Mariah Williams, Keelan Childress, Marqyce Williams, Jadarion Williams, and 43 additional grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Elsie is also survived by her sisters: Sally Hemminger and Ray of Salt Lake, Rosie Vasquez of Roswell, Gloria Carrasco and Jay of Austin, Texas, Olga and Galvan of San Antonio, and her baby sister and sidekick, Brenda Carrasco of Austin, Texas; brothers: Jimmy Carrasco, Joe Carrasco, and Flo of Carlsbad, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Frankie Carrasco, sister Sandy Duarte, and three fur babies. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 1, 2023, at Carlsbad First Assembly, with Associate Pastor Patrick Long officiating. Following the service, cremation will take place. Michael Phillips, 50, of Carlsbad, NM, passed away at home on Friday, November 17, 2023, surrounded by his family and friends. Michael Sean Phillips was born in Carlsbad to Billy Jack and Wanda (Blatsvich) Phillips on October 25, 1973. He grew up playing sports, eventually playing Caveman baseball before graduating from Carlsbad High School in 1992. Mike remained active in the community coaching youth sports, playing softball and then baseball in the "Oldtimers" league and was a longtime member of the Carlsbad Lodge of Elks #1558. As a life-long resident of Carlsbad, Mike was well loved by his many, many close friends and family. Mike was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer and loved camping and doing anything that would get him outdoors. He worked in the oil, gas, and mining industries for most of his life and was also into mechanics and welding. His longtime neighbors and friends especially enjoyed and will dearly miss his cooking and grilling. Michael was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Stella Blatsvich, JB and Edna Phillips, parents Billy Phillips and Wanda Blatsvich, and niece Shelby Ridgway. He attended school in Carlsbad and completed school in Roswell at New Mexico Youth Challenge Program. Bryce enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corp where he served his country for six years. He worked for AXXON and then one year as a corrections officer. Bryce recently went to work at WIPP as a security officer. He was a jack of all trades and master of none. Bryce loved gaming, bowling, and golfing. He was a Free Mason and member of a lodge in Virginia. Most importantly, he was a wonderful husband and father. Bryce was preceded in death by his grandfather, Walter Thayer.
