Margaret (Peggy) Devane

Dec 05, 1936 - Feb 13, 2024

location-icon

Birmingham, AL

Margaret (Peggy) Devane passed away on February 13, 2024. She was a beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. Peggy delighted in every member of her family and their lives are all enriched by that love. Peggy's faith was the most important part of her life and she loved praying daily for her family and friends. If a concern was ever shared, Peggy would often stop mid-conversation and pray spontaneously for that concern and the affected people. She was a faithful member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church and loved her Homestead Sunday School class dearly. Peggy was a radiant, joy-filled woman who lit up every room she entered. She was prone to burst into spontaneous song and cause laughter around the dinner table. Peggy was an enthusiastic connector of people and collector of friends, the type of person to enter any store and come out with the salesperson as a new friend. Over the years, she invited many of these friends into her home and became a babysitter, adopted grandmother and encourager of countless people. Peggy was born on December 5, 1936 in the Bronx, New York, never entirely losing her New York accent, even after living years in Houston, Nashville, Atlanta, and Hoover. Peggy was proud to be the daughter of a 3rd generation NYPD officer and sister of NIck Walsh, a 4th generation NYPD officer. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to King's Home in Chelsea, Alabama. Peggy was a founding member of Hannah Home Shelby County, their women's and children's ministry (started around her dining room table). She was also an advocate for Big Oak Ranch. Peggy delighted in joining causes that helped underprivileged youth and single mothers. Every night, Peggy would kneel beside her bed to pray for a long list of people and also pray for the salvation of those who do not know Jesus. Peggy also was effective in ministering via phone to inmates and prisoners in the Alabama state prisons and they benefited greatly from her love, concern and encouragement. The service will be Friday, February 23, at 2:00 pm at the Briarwood Presbyterian Church; 2200 Briarwood Way, Birmingham, Alabama 35243.
