Gilbert Shepard, 82, Gas City, passed away at 1:23 pm on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at Twin City Healthcare in Gas City. He was born in Gary, Indiana, on Saturday, June 14, 1941. Gilbert graduated from Lincoln High (Canton, Ohio) and attended Ohio State University. He served in the United States Army, achieving the rank of PVT E-1, and was honorably discharged due to medical reasons. Gilbert liked country music, being outdoors, drinking Coke, and eating candy. He will be missed by his Twin City family and friends. Burial for Gilbert will take place at Marion National Cemetery on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. Ward D. TurnerDecember 13, 1943 ~ December 7, 2023Ward D. Turner, 79, Gas City, went to be with the Lord on Thursday morning, December 7, 2023. He was surrounded by his wife and children after a nearly three-year battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. Ward was born in Marion, Indiana, on Monday, December 13, 1943, to Charles and Violet (Pratt) Turner. Ward was a loving husband of 56 years to his wife, Marcia and a beloved, kind and wise father and grandfather to his four children, their spouses and fourteen grandchildren. He was a quiet, unassuming and down-to-earth, hardworking man who loved the Lord and was a lifelong student of the Bible. Ward graduated from Mississinewa High School in 1961, and after farming with his father, he graduated from Moody Bible Institute in 1968, attended Grace College and graduated from Taylor University in 1971. In 1993, he received his master's in counseling from Liberty University and was licensed by the State of Indiana as a mental Health Counselor. As revealed by Ward's experiences, he was a multi-talented man who endeavored to do well. From his teenage years when he began teaching the youth Sunday School class at his church, Ward desired to study, teach and preach God's Word. Before being ordained to the Christian ministry in 1992, he served as the Associate Pastor of Union Chapel Baptist Church for many years. He was the worship leader and choir director, staffed and supervised many volunteer workers, served on the church board, taught adult Sunday school classes and directed a live radio broadcast with the Pastor. Ward's teaching ministry led him to Malawi, Africa three times to teach in the Pastor's Conference for Gospelink. All his adult life, Ward was a carpenter and builder. He used those skills to start a carpentry school in Malawi. He felt very blessed to use his God-given ability as the project manager for the 2002 building addition to his church, Upland Community Church. Ward was known to use his carpentry experience to help family, friends and organizations including Helping Hand food pantry and Lightrider Ministries in Upland. Ward was the owner of FCI Builders with the Bonanza Builders franchise for 18 years. Over 40 young men "got their start" under his guidance. During this time, he was also a part-time deputy Marshall in Upland. He was a counselor for 35 years, working in private practice and in counseling centers in Ft. Wayne, Kokomo, Logansport and at the Grant County Rescue Mission. Ward provided individual, family and crisis counseling, helping many people. During these years, Ward was also a FEMA reservist, working 15 years during many stateside disasters and in Puerto Rico. He was assigned as an individual assistance specialist or crisis counseling/disaster unemployment/legal services program specialist. Ward was a member of Upland Community Church, was an American Psychotherapy Association Diplomat and a certified relationship specialist, a charter member of the American Association of Christian Counselors, member of Christian Professional Counselors, achieved Level II EMDR training and was a member of several counseling referral agencies including Focus on the Family. In 2009, he received appreciation from Indiana Family and Social Services Administration Division of Mental Health and Addiction for serving Indiana Project Aftermath FEMA Crisis Counseling program. In addition to his wife, Marcia, Ward is survived by son, Mark (Julie) Turner of Granger; daughters, Anne (Don) Wierenga of Granger; Carol (Mark) Jones of Loveland, Ohio; Amy (Andrew) Kellogg of Fishers; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Katherine, Nathan Turner; Ethan (Aubrei), Grace, Ava, Carter, Mason Wierenga; Savannah and Benjamin Jones; Juliana, Molly and Drew Kellogg; brother, James (Rosemary) Turner; sister, Dixie Abbott; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Violet Turner; sister, Sue Artherhults; brother-in-law, Frank Artherhults; brother-in-law, Douglas Abbott; and nephew, Steven Turner. Franklin N. Davis, age 74, of Gas City, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023, at home surrounded by his family. Franklin was born on November 6, 1949, the son of the late Paul Davis and Roberta (Youngsman) Davis. He married Nancy J. Call on July 31, 1992, and she preceded him in death on April 2, 2004. Franklin was an Army Veteran, and then worked in maintenance at General Motors until his retirement He enjoyed sitting on his porch with his dog, Hershey, and spending time with his great-granddaughter, Addison, who always made him so happy. Franklin also enjoyed his coffee and playing the Lotto, and spending time with his girlfriend, Betty Riley. He is survived by his son, Franklin (Penny Dodson) Davis of Gas City; a daughter, Jessica (Johnny) Gonzales; two step-sons, John Call of Michigan and Bradley Call of Marion; brothers, Joe (Wanda) Davis, Dallas (Vicki) Davis, Gary (Brenda) Davis, Dennis (Shelly) Davis, all of Michigan, and Mick Davis of Missouri; a sister, Marilyn Fish of Michigan; many grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and his girlfriend, Betty Riley. He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Schenley and Laura Davis; two brothers, Duane and Carol Davis; a sister, Roberta Ann Craig; and a daughter-in-law, Kandi Davis. She was born in Muncie, Indiana, on Monday, February 13, 1922, to Orley and Ruby (Hart) Duke. Anna May lived in Gas City for 70 plus years. She worked at Owens Illinois Glass Factory, RCA, and retired from Glass Containers in Gas City. She loved to play family games, work puzzles, win at cards and play BINGO. She loved her Sunday School class, Bible studies and enjoyed going out to eat with her grandchildren. Most of all, she was a very giving and generous lady. Judith "Judy" Persinger, 83, Marion, went to be with the Lord on September 23, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones in her home. She married her beloved, Marvin, on February 1, 1963. Judy was a very kind soul and often described as "a little spicy", as her daughter, Kelly, and granddaughters would call it. Judy worked at Midwest Delta and the VA for many years. After retiring, she and her family began being Marvin's caregivers for many years until his final days. Judy enjoyed reading, woodworking, planting from seed and painting figurines which she gifted to her family and friends. She also enjoyed eating with her family at Jackie's Family Restaurant and showing off her great-grandkids and how much they've grown. She referred to them as her little pumpkins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cleopha and Audrey Griffin; husband, Marvin; and her brother and sisters. She is survived by her children, Debbie Persinger (Frank) of Jonesboro, Margaret (Mark) Pendley of Rochester, Kelly (Clark Copher) Spencer of Marion, Mark (Remi Felver) Persinger of Fairmount, and Brent (Missy) Persinger of Fairborn, OH; 13 grandkids; and 8 great-grandkids. She was born in Marion, Indiana, on Wednesday, January 4, 1928, to Jess and Ruth (Hutchison) Rogers. On April 26, 1951, she married Russell Phillip Cummings, Sr. and he survives. Margaret graduated from Jefferson High School and worked as an inspector for 28 years with RCA, retiring in 1985. Her and her husband, Russell spent 37 wonderful years part-time in Seminole and Largo Florida. She loved bowling in her earlier days, crocheting and knitting, dancing, BINGO, canning vegetables, playing cards, and making Sunday chicken and noodle dinners. Most of all she loved spending time with family and attending her grandchildren's sporting events and activities. Dawn M. Ellis, 62, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Twin City Health Care in Gas City. Dawn was born on May 19, 1961, to the late Robert and Carmen Hutchens. She married John Ellis on January 8, 1978, and he survives. She grew up in Marion and graduated from Marion High School. She became the Office Manager at County Market, where she worked for many years. Finally, Dawn was able to become a stay at home mom, which she loved. She took care of her children, as well as many nieces. She was a mom to everyone. She enjoyed working on puzzles and taking care of plants, listening to classic rock, and crafting holders for all of her plants. She was a big fan of Jeff Gordon and Nascar racing. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Dawn is survived by her husband, John; daughters, Kasey (Kyle Davis) Ellis, Jessica (Thomas) Wiggin, Melissa (Travis) Dearing, and Amanda (David) Moore; grandchildren, John and Veronica Tucker and Miranda (Jake Banks) Ellis, Conner and Elijah Wiggin, Brooklyn, Kassidee, Aleiah, Nataleigh, Korah, and Levi Dearing, Cason Ellis, Orion Williams, and Melanie, Wyatt, and Aurora Moore; great-grandchildren, Carter and Maison Banks; and brother, Kyle Hutchens. Helen L. Plummer-Lopez, 83, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on August 15, 2023, at 3:45 am at Twin City Healthcare in Gas City. She was born in Pea Ridge, Kentucky, on Monday, February 12, 1940, to Hobert and Gertrude (Jefferson) Plummer. She had five sisters and five brothers: Beulah, Maudie, Margaret, Julie, Ida Pearl, Johnny, Ralph, Roy, Thomas, and Leroy. In 1957, Helen moved to Marion, where she met and married James L. Havens. She was a homemaker and mother to nine children: Pam, Tony, Eddie, Julie, Bobby, Jimmy Dale, Tommy, Rick, and Carol. She was also a nanny for many years. Later in life, Helen married Benjamin Lopez, and he preceded her in death. Helen was a great cook and enjoyed listening to music, feeding the birds, fishing, and scratch-off tickets. She also enjoyed spending time with her best friends and granddaughters, Destiny and Kayla Havens. Helen was a beautiful soul with a big heart. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. Survivors include her sons, James Havens of AZ, Rick Havens of AZ, Bobby Havens of Marion, and Thomas Havens of AZ; and daughters, Carolyn Hawkins of AZ and Pamela Havens of KY. She was also blessed with 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
