Scarborough - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Andrew Putney III (Andy), a remarkable man whose life was marked by a deep love for boating, creative woodworking, a dedicated service to his country, a career in the aviation industry, and a family owned daycare business with lots of friendly "varmints" as he used to refer to them. Born on March 17, 1942 in Framingham, MA, Andy served his country with honor and bravery in the U. S. Navy during his youth, contributing to the defense of our nation with unwavering commitment. His time in the Navy instilled in him values of discipline, integrity, and a sense of duty that he carried throughout his life. Andy's passion for boating was a source of joy and adventure for him. During his childhood, Andy spent his summers at Higgins Beach with his mother, Ruth Putney, enjoying boating and playing with his beach friends. Whether he was tinkering around on his boats, cruising along serene coastal waters of Maine, or navigating through challenging currents, his connection to the sea was undeniable. He often shared his love for the water with family and friends, creating cherished memories on countless voyages. In his workshop, Andy transformed raw pieces of wood into beautiful and functional works of art. His creative woodworking projects were a testament to his craftsmanship and imagination. He took great pride in his ability to craft furniture and decor that not only showcased his talent but also enriched the lives of those who admired his creations. In addition to his woodworking skills, Andy was very handy around the house and enjoyed puttering around on a variety of projects. He worked at his own pace and was nicknamed "Putt" by his friends. This name followed him throughout his life and will never be forgotten. Throughout his professional career in the aviation industry at Maine Aviation, Andy continued to exhibit the same dedication and precision that defined his service in the Navy. His contributions to the industry left a lasting impact, and his colleagues remember him as a knowledgeable and reliable professional. After Andy retired from aviation in 1985, he joined his wife, Shirley, and helped her run a very successful daycare called Lil' Folks Farm Nursery School in Scarborough, Maine for nearly 30 years. Lil' Folks Farm was named after the daycare Andy attended in Framingham, MA. Andy's love for animals was on full display at Lil' Folks Farm. During this time, Andy took care of a variety of barnyard animals including llamas, alpacas, goats, sheep, and rabbits. He loved them all dearly and they loved him back. Andy always tried to stay one step ahead of the varmints, yet the critters seemed to outwit him more often than not. George Andrew Putney, III is survived by his beloved wife Shirley Ann Putney, his son George Andrew Putney, IV, daughter Tricia Ann Putney, and four grandchildren, McKenzie, Eli, Bryce, and Miranda who will forever cherish his memory and the legacy he leaves behind. As we bid farewell to this exceptional man, let us remember his love for the open sea, his creative woodworking endeavors, and his commitment to his family, country and career. Andy was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His spirit will live on in the stories we share, the pictures we cherish, and the beautiful pieces of woodwork he has crafted over the years. A memorial service to celebrate Andy's life was held on September 12, 2023 at the Black Point Cemetery for immediate family only per Andy's final wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in his honor to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and Hospice of Southern Maine. May Andy find eternal peace as he sails into the horizon of eternity, leaving behind a wake of cherished memories and a legacy of service, creativity, and love for all who had the privilege of knowing him. At Northeastern, Gene was a member of Phi Alpha Rho fraternity, and with his brothers soon formed a chapter of Delta Chi. Gene loved his family more than anything. His other loves included his golden retrievers and his cars - especially Audis and the 1966 candy apple red Mustang convertible that he helped restore and loved to drive around Cape Elizabeth. He loved walking in the woods and along the shore near his home, and looked forward each spring to the sound of "peeper" frogs. He also enjoyed jogging, skiing and ice skating; tending to his vegetable gardens and tackling projects at home; learning about craft beer and listening to music, with a fondness for jazz, bossa nova and the Beatles. Gene began his long insurance career working at Aetna. In 1979, he became an agent for Portland-based Morse Payson & Noyes Insurance, where he specialized in commercial lines and bonding. By the end of his career, when he retired in 2015, he was a Vice President at TD Insurance and had won many clients and made many friends across Greater Portland and Southern Maine. His charitable work included board positions at the Cape Courier and Catherine Morrill Day Nursery. He also gave his time to Catholic Charities and Saint Bartholomew Parish. Barbara Henningsen

Age - 89

November 21, 2023

Scarborough - Barbara L. Henningsen, 89, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough. She was born at home in Portland, Maine, on August 4, 1934, the daughter of Viola May (Shaw) Gallant and Arthur Gallant. She was one of five siblings, all birthed at home. She grew up in Portland, Maine and attended Cathedral High School. She met the love of her life, Edward J. Henningsen, Sr. , while working as a "soda jerk" in high school at a local drugstore. They had whirlwind adventures, one of which took them on a "secret" road trip to Texas, leaving in the middle of the night, while her parents were sleeping. To say she had a sense of adventure was an understatement. They married in Texas, on February 9, 1955. When they became pregnant with their first child, she wanted to move back to Maine to be closer to her family. They drove from Texas to Maine when she was in labor. Dad breaking speed limits all the way home. She was determined to have the baby in Maine and would not allow him to stop driving until they reached home. They all arrived home safely, and their bouncing baby boy was born just 6 hours after their arrival! They had 37 crazy years together raising three children. She was a stay-at-home Mom until her youngest started school. She then began a career working for Unum, until she retired in 2003. Barbara loved to sew and knit, making beautifully detailed baby sweaters for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and Easter outfits for her daughters, which we didn't like, but pretended that we did. She enjoyed fishing, skating, sledding and bowling in her younger years. She was always ready to have a good time with her family and friends. Barbara and Jim loved to go see the Blue Angels and made it an annual excursion. She loved to play cards and didn't like to lose! She had been known to cheat just to win (sorry Mom, it's the truth). She was a huge fan of Tom Jones and Kenny Rodgers. She saw them both in concert and talked about it with endless excitement! If music was playing, she could not stay still! She was a great line dancer and loved to jitterbug. She spent many years packing up the family for annual trips to Rangeley Lake with her parents. She loved fishing with her Dad and Mom. Barbara loved the holidays and always worked hard to make them memorable for her children and grandchildren. Money was not in abundance, but she always made Christmas special. She would take us to midnight mass on Christmas Eve, which was very magical, especially when it was snowing! Her favorite christmas movie was White Christmas with Bing Crosby. After her retirement, she acquired a trusted companion, her much loved dog, Melody. They enjoyed each other's company immensely, taking walks and snuggling up in their recliner. Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Edward J. Henningsen; two brothers, Robert and Arthur Gallant; one sister, Lorretta Flaherty; son in law, Fred Conley. She is survived by her son Edward J. Henningsen, Jr. and his wife Joanna of Windham; two daughters, Linda Conley and her partner Todd of Biddeford; Susan Frazier of Scarborough; sister, Dorothy Peace of Scarborough. She has seven grandchildren and fourteen precious great grandchildren: Matthew Conley and his wife Ally and their daughter Logan of Standish; Brandi Flannery and her husband Mike and daughter Violet of South Portland; Alycia Curtis and her husband Dustin and two daughters, MacKenzie and Nora of Standish; Joseph Henningsen and his wife Jessica and two daughters, Gabby and Cora, son Jace; Bryan Conley and his wife Jessica and two daughters, Natalie and Hailey of Durham; Kayla Gaillard and her three daughters, Claire, Savanah,Scarlett, son, Grayden of South Portland; Kelsi Hebert and her husband Matthew and one daughter, Teagan, son, Findley of Saco. Barbara was fiercely independent, strong willed, loving, funny, beautiful, unfiltered and sarcastic. We all loved her for ALL of these traits and many more. She lived for her family and friends. She was truly a saint on earth. Her legacy lives on in each member of her blessed family. We love you to the moon and back, Mom and Nana!! Thank you for your unconditional love! The family would like to thank the nurses at Maine Med and the staff at Gosnell House for their compassionate care of Mom in her last days. Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Friday, November 24, 2023, from 5:00 - 7:00pm at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 10:00am at Holy Cross Church in South Portland. Alicia Rae Pettigrazzio, a beloved daughter, mother, sister, auntie, and Nonnie. We would love to describe our mother to you. She was someone with a fiery soul and a strong-willed mind that led her through life. She had a tendency to go against the grain but that is what made her who she was. She has always been adventurous and a thrill seeker. She loved to be outdoors and playing right along with the kids, she loved the ocean, swimming and riding the waves. She was a caretaker through and through. She enjoyed taking care of and doing for others, whether she knew you or not. She loved her children and grandchildren more than you could understand, they were her pride and joy and she wanted to spend every minute possible with them. Her smile made you smile, her hugs made you feel warm and her snuggles made you feel safe. You could always tell what she was feeling based on what music she was blasting at the time. She would stop everything if you called and needed to talk. She loved to talk and would literally talk for hours upon hours, always sharing specific details and outlining all of the events as she experienced them. There was never a time she would hang up before you were ready. If she knew you were coming over, she would prepare your favorite meal to have waiting, not forgetting a single detail. Mom always wanted you to feel like you were the most important one in that moment. She loved deeply, truly, and fiercely. All she wanted in life was to make her loved ones proud. It was effortless to love her, and we will miss her for an eternity. Alicia is predeceased by her mother Cynthia Merriman, whom she wanted nothing more than to be with again. Her grandparents Phyllis Steen Darling and Adelbert Darling.
