George Maynard "Coach" Nipe Jr. , 76, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Tuesday October 3, 2023 at the Sentara RMH Medical Center. Mr. Nipe was born on August 11, 1947 in Roanoke, and was a son of the late Dr. George and Louise (Bowman) Nipe. George attended Bridgewater College where he played football, and he later completed his education at James Madison University. He went on to coach football at JMU where he was a member of the original coaching staff when the program began in 1972. Before his passing George was the last surviving member of that original staff. He spent almost 20 years in coaching and he always said what he loved the most was helping young men reach their full potential. Within the WW II historian community, he was widely considered an expert on the eastern front, frequently reached out for consultation by other writers. He wrote three published books, Decision in the Ukraine, Blood, Steel, and Myth, and Last Victory in Russia. Friends and family knew George for his dry and witty sense humor, as well as his love of books, music and dogs. On November 24, 1979 he married the former Linda Turner who survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. Nipe is survived by a son, George Maynard Nipe, III and fiance, Christina of Harrisonburg; a brother, Jim Nipe and wife Mary Lou of Bridgewater; sister, Ann Stevens and husband Jeff of Florida; nieces and nephews, Mindy Hughes and husband Denny, Scott Turner and wife Marilyn, Katie Regan and husband Matt, Dan Batman, Christian Nipe and Kassi. A memorial service will be held on Saturday October 21, 2023 at 1 PM at Harrisonburg First Church of the Brethren 315 S. Dogwood Dr. , Harrisonburg, with Pastor Marty Doss and Mary Lou McMillin officiating. His lifelong friend Brent Good and his son will also be speaking at the service. The family will receive friends following the service. Daphne "Hope" Scripture passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, November 25, 2023, after a courageous battle with stomach cancer. Hope was a devoted Christian, a much-loved mother and grandmother and a steadfast friend to those she held dear. Hope was born on May 2, 1947, in Berea, Kentucky. She was raised in Ashton, Maryland and graduated from Sherwood High School in 1965. She attended the University of Maryland, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education. After college she captured the attention of the world of modeling, becoming Miss Washington, D. C. , and participating in the Miss USA Pageant. Her passion for teaching led her to inspire young minds at Harmony Hills in Aspen Hill, Maryland, and Woodstock, Virginia, later serving as a substitute teacher in Harrisonburg City Schools. Her thirst for knowledge drove her to James Madison University, where she initially pursued a master's in counseling before delving into Real Estate Law, becoming a licensed Real Estate agent and Broker at Coldwell Banker Funkhouser Realty in Virginia. Hope was not only an educator but an active participant in community service. A proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as the Historian in 2019. Recognized with the Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonel, she was an active member of the Virginia Federation of Republican Women and the Junior Women's Club. She was an esteemed member of various Committees where she held positions of honor and responsibility, leaving a mark on the communities she touched. Her zest for life was mirrored in her love for travel, exploring countries across the globe including New Zealand, Australia, Egypt, China, Russia, Arctic Circle and Europe. She created cherished memories alongside her dear friends and instilled in her daughters a love for travel and adventure. She was preceded in death by her late husband, William Hugh Baber, III and her mother Mary Ann Davis Durnell. Hope leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by her daughters Sarah Scripture Sawyer, Laura Hope Scripture and husband Brooke Van Dusen, and her former husband and father of her daughters, Jared Standish Scripture. Her six grandchildren, Miles, Gage, Fielding, Hayes, Tyler Hope, and Colton were the lights of her life. Her most adored times involved spending time with her grandchildren. She delighted in watching them golf, swim and play tennis at Spotswood Country Club. At home she would join them in a lively game of pickleball, a swim in the pool, and tending to her garden. She also took time to teach them the intricate game of bridge. Her grandchildren remember her fondly for her invaluable guidance and gifts of virtue. A Celebration of Hope's Life will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024, at 11 a. m. , at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, officiated by Reverend Joseph Butler and Dr. John Sloop. Dennis Lee Reamy, born in Washington D. C. , on March 14, 1943, departed peacefully from this world on Monday, November 13, 2023. Dennis, a devoted husband, is survived by his loving wife, Curlene Reamy, and their cherished children: daughters, Bobbi Jo; Jonathan Kipps, Patricia Lynn; husband John Martin, Whitney Dennise; husband Patrick Henderson, and son Christopher Crawford Reamy. His legacy also lives on through his adored grandchildren: Kelcie; husband George Gray, Ryan Henderson, Reagan Henderson, Carter Henderson, Madisyn Forloines, Tori Martin, Patrick Martin, Charlie Martin, and Christian Reamy. Dennis dedicated many years of his life to the service of others through his career at AT&T telephone company, retiring with a wealth of knowledge and experiences.
