Walker, Hilda Margaret (nee Dickey) June 17, 1925 - November 24, 2023 Sadly, we wish to announce the passing of Dr. Hilda Walker, an amazing lady, mother, and doctor. Born in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, she grew up on a farm and later pursued her medical degree at Trinity College, Dublin. After marrying Dr. John Walker in 1953, they moved from Ireland to Fort Macleod, Alberta, in 1955 with baby daughter, Heather. She was one of the few female physicians of the time. She and Dr. John started the Walker Clinic where they practiced rural family medicine including anaesthesia, emergency care, obstetrics, and surgery. As a true rural physician, she was deeply involved in the care of multiple generations of patients from birth to death. Among her achievements was chairing the Alberta Task Force on Services to Disabled Persons that produced the Klufas Report in 1983 and membership on the Senate of the University of Lethbridge for a number of years. After moving to Victoria in 1993, she and Dr. John were active in the establishment of the Cadboro Bay Probus Club. Additionally, she was very involved in the New Comers Club, the Canadian Institute of International Affairs, and the Trinity College Dublin Alumni. She had a very caring heart and gave generously to many charitable organizations. Her home was always open to family and friends and a central drop in for many and varied occasions. Hilda was a lover of music, theatre, and art, and was a whiz at cryptic crosswords! She travelled the world, and as the matriarch of a large and growing family, eagerly embraced modern technology to bring together family members from Ireland, Scotland, England, Norway, New Zealand, Australia, and across Canada. She is survived by her children: Heather Abramenko (Rob), Colleen Getz (Russell), and Terry Walker (Julia); her eight grandchildren: Daniel, Marcus, Bradley, and Wendy Abramenko, Jennifer and Alan Getz, and Fiona and Sloane Walker; her seven great grandchildren; and her many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents, William and Mary Dickey, siblings Nathaniel, Hugh (Sally), and David (Rona, Mary). Family and friends will be invited for a remembrance of Hilda at the Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria on Saturday, July 27, 2024. In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice. Robert Mcpherson

Robert Mcpherson

Age - 80

November 22, 2023

McPherson, Robert Grant (Mac) Peacefully on November 15, 2023, in his 81st year, at Almonte General Hospital with family at his side. Proud and loving father of Hamish (Marissa). Survived and deeply missed by his brother, Ian; much beloved by his cousins; fondly remembered by his friend, Ursula (Ralf). Ever one to walk a different path, as a Probation Officer in Ottawa, Mac advocated for alternatives to incarceration for at-risk youth, supporting the adventure therapy program Project D. A. R. E. near South River, Ontario. There, Mac shared his passion for canoes, and his habit of standing up to 'read the rips'. Caring deeply about preserving the heritage and architecture of Lanark County, Mac served on the Almonte-Ramsay L. A. C. A. C. (Local Architecture Conservation Advisory Committee). Mac's greatest joy was being father of Hamish, relishing early mornings with a Timies' coffee at a cold hockey rink, gleefully throwing his hat onto the ice, and proudly cheering on the sidelines of soccer matches. In keeping with Mac's wishes, cremation will occur with a family Celebration of Life to follow. With each Skirl 'o the Pipes, our hearts will ache! The family wish to extend their profound thanks to Dr. Ray for the care and friendship given to Mac, the staff of Almonte General Hospital, and to all who work and volunteer at Orchard View on the Mississippi, Almonte, for their excellent care and compassion given to Mac while he was resident. Over the years, it has taken a village and town to support Mac: the family is grateful for the friends and residents of Appleton and Almonte for their kindness. For those who choose to honour Mac with a memorial donation, please consider the Almonte General Hospital or Movember Canada. Funeral Arrangements Entrusted Into The Care of C. R. Mona Macdonald

Mona Macdonald

Age - 84

November 10, 2023

MacDonald, Mona Marie (nee MacIsaac) Our beloved mother and grandmother (Amoo), Mona MacDonald, passed away on October 12, 2023 at the age of 84. She was born and raised in God's Country, in Glace Bay on the island of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and was currently of Almonte Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernie MacDonald. She will be deeply missed by her three daughters: Angela (the late Dennis Burns), Jan (Steve Boletchek) and Gena (Tony Morrow) and by her treasured grandchildren: Joshua, Andrew and Matthew Desjarlais, Sonya (Matt Ireton), Jason Morrow, Audrey and Ben Burns, Christian and Ian Boletchek, as well as great grandchildren Cadence and Carter. Mona never made a distinction between step-grandchildren or foster children (under Gena's care). The children were all family, and always included. Mona was the only child of Bridget (Keenan) MacIsaac and Walter A. MacIsaac. She was adored by her husband's large family, and her mother-in-law Blanche took her right under her wing as if she was one of her own. She followed in her mother's footsteps and earned her diploma as an RN, from St. Martha's School of Nursing in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where she met Bernie. After a few years of living with her young family in Halifax, Ottawa and Montreal, the family settled in Harvard, Massachusetts for 15 years. She was a second mom to many there, as neighborhood children would enjoy punching down the rising bread dough in her kitchen, and baking goodies. She was busy and creative in the home, making assorted relishes from Bernie's bumper crops, knitting and sewing clothes, giving haircuts and perms at the kitchen table, hosting the annual Christmas caroling group, and using her artistic talents to transform the house into a beautiful, warm and welcoming home. Her kind, compassionate and sweet nature made her an excellent nurse, and after briefly working at Nashoba Hospital in Ayer, Mass, she transitioned to private home care. She had a wonderful sense of humor, a quick laugh, was easily delighted, and was lots of fun. At the height of the hippie era, while Bernie was away on business, she got the idea to plaster the family VW bug with big colorful flower stickers. She made sure to have her enthusiastic young girls do the deed instead of herself, so she wouldn't get in trouble from Bernie! She was an animated Sens fan and loved rooting on her grandchildren in their athletic, musical and outdoor adventures. Her happy place was with a big mug of tea, tucked into her chair, engrossed in a novel. She will be deeply missed by her family, including her many nieces and nephews, her sister in law Martina and her brother in law Ralph on the MacDonald side. Mona's family would like to thank the staff of Fairview Manor in Almonte, Ontario for their compassionate care. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 6pm at the Holy Name of Mary Parish (134 Bridge St Almonte) with reception to follow at the Almonte Community Center, 182 Bridge St, Almonte, Ontario.
