Stephanie Michelle Kennemore, while surrounded by her family, passed away on February 19th, 2024. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Royer’s New Salem Funeral Home, Independence, MO. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Stephanie was born to Marsha Griger on October 28, 1968 in Omaha, NE. Stephanie developed a passion for hard work, her family and developed a huge love of children at a very early age. Like many of us she had many chapters in her own book of life. From a food chain manager, trucking company manager, foster parent, frequent traveler and mover to all over the country, child development specialist and ultimately a loving daughter, sister, niece, mother and grandmother. Many lovingly called her “Big Mama,” as when you were around she was going to parent you. Her child or not! Stephanie was passionate about sharing the love of our Lord with others. A loyal servant of God, Stephanie was dedicated to playing worship music, loving and feeding her friends and family, and building community wherever she went. Now that Stephanie has passed into the arms of our Lord, her physical life on earth is over but it is the beginning of an eternal and beautiful journey for her. She is survived by her mother Marsha Griger (Carlson) her aunt and partner, Bobbye Carlson & Jerry VanSant, Sister Vicki Smith and family, Michaella Smith, Briana Black, Jerica Collier and 10 great nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Friday, March 1 at Royer’s New Salem Funeral Home in Independence, with visitation at 5:00 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at 6:00 p.m. Sylvia was born July 19, 1943, in Independence, Missouri, the daughter of Chester W. and Elsie (Lew) Rice. She was an avid animal lover, especially dogs and cats. During her life, Sylvia worked at numerous animal shelters. She loved going out to eat and shopping, and cherished spending time with her family at Christmas time. Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Pam Staats (Randy); son, Chris Spence (Jan); daughter, Wendy Laughter; five grandchildren: Kyle, Kirstie, Hailey, Lainey, and Megan; and three great-grandchildren: Lilly, Shayden, and James. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of 35 years, John McConnell.

Robert “Rob” Edward Fredenberg, Jr., aged 61, of Independence, Missouri, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2024, after a yearlong battle of cancer. Born on December 21, 1962, he was the youngest son of the late Alice and Bob Fredenberg. Rob’s life was a reflection of his deep faith and commitment to his family and community. Rob attended William Chrisman High School, Graceland College, Central Missouri State University, and the Kansas City Art Institute, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Illustration. He worked for Innerspace Storage for 28 years and part time for the Kansas City Royals for 9 years. A long-standing member of The Gathering Baptist Church, Rob’s commitment to his faith was evident in all aspects of his life. He used his art skills in service to his church community. An Eagle Scout, he continued to serve Scouting as an adult leader and enjoyed mentoring the youth. Rob had a passion for others, was charismatic, and embodied a servant’s heart in all aspects of his life. Rob is survived by his devoted wife, Heather, and his loving sons, Mason (and his wife Maddie) and Preston, granddaughters, Luella and Mabel, brothers Ed (Johanna) and Ken (Nancy). He will be greatly missed by them along with a large group of extended family and friends. Visitation will be held at the Gathering Baptist Church on Noland Road on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 3:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 PM. Duane Frances Theesfeld passed away Thursday, February 22, 2024 at his home in Independence, MO. with his loving wife and family by his side. Duane was born to Henry and Barbara Theesfeld at their farm in Terril, IA on Feb. 20, 1930. Duane was the last survivor from his family of 14 siblings. He was also preceded in death by two of his sons, Ronald and Joseph. He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Ross) Theesfeld. His surviving children are Michael Theesfeld, Shelly (& Brian) Donovan. Lisa Bohannon, Melissa (& Fred) Nichelson and his “Best Bud,” Landyn Ross. Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Duane was a lifelong truck driver. He started his career in Sioux Falls SD. Forty-four years later he retired from Central Plains Cement in Sugar Creek, Mo. He was a proud member of Teamsters Local 541. In retirement up to age 91, Duane hauled cars from one coast to the other with his favorite Ford Truck. Duane was a Life Member of Knights of Columbus Council 07055. He was a member of the St Joseph the Worker congregation and then St. Marks Catholic Church. Duane always had a heart of gold. He often took his homegrown veggies to the local convent or shared them with anyone who he thought would enjoy them. He generously shared his gardening supplies and his gardening knowledge with family. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Services will be at: St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Independence, MO on Monday, March 4, 2024 with Visitation at 10:00 a.m. and Mass at 11:00 a.m.; burial following at New Salem Cemetery, Independence, MO. Virginia Shirlene Cobb November 23, 1931 – February 24, 2024 Virginia “Shirlene” Cobb, age 92, passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2024. Shirlene was born on November 23, 1931, to Elden Lee and Corda Louise (McMullin) Davidson of Kansas City, Missouri. She developed a love for tap and toe dancing as a young girl and this passion continued throughout high school. She graduated from Northeast High School in June of 1951. Shirlene was married in 1951 and became a homemaker and stay at home mom until her children were grown. She then started working at Watkins Products and worked there until her retirement. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery, reading, Chinese checkers and always seemed to be working on a jigsaw puzzle. She was an avid KU Basketball and Kansas City Chiefs Football fan. Her happiest times were being with her family and loving on her grandbabies. Shirlene is survived by her four children Sheila Julo (Jack), Susan Christian, Stanley Cobb and Sandra Jones (Ken); her four grandchildren Angela Hoger, Michael Christian (Tina), Nathan Julo (Courtney) and Maegan Jones and her five great-grandchildren Aniston, Berkley, Rylie, Drew and Beckham as well as nieces, nephews and cousins which she loved with all her heart. The family would like to thank Monterey Park of Independence, MO for their wonderful care, many friendships and their never give up attitude over the last four years and Missouri Palliative & Hospice Care for their care and support during her final days. Visitation will be held on February 29, 2024 from 9:00 to 11:00 am at Floral Hills Funeral Home at 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64133. A private graveside service will follow at Floral Hills Cemetery.

Vernon Merle Smith

Vernon “Smitty” Smith, age 94, of Brookfield, passed away Friday, February 23, 2024, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Missouri. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 4, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Park Baptist Church in Brookfield with Pastor David Blakely officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. A private Burial will take place at a later date at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Shafter, Missouri. Memorials to Mt. Olive Cemetery may be left at the church or mailed to Wright Funeral Home, P.O. Box 496, Brookfield, MO 64628. Vernon Merle, son of Harley and Nettie (Dowell) Smith, was born March 26, 1929, in Shafter, Missouri. On September 24, 1949, he married Martha Ann Graham who preceded him in death on June 2, 2015. Vernon was a lifelong resident of Linn County. He was a member of Park Baptist Church in Brookfield where he had served as a Deacon, and also attended Trinity United Methodist Church for a time. Vernon had worked for several years at Biegel Refrigeration in Brookfield and was the owner and operator of Smitty’s Cabinet Shop in Brookfield for over 50 years. Vernon was a true sports enthusiast. He was an outstanding basketball player in high school (and where he was given the nickname of "Short" by teammates, since he was literally short but extremely quick/fast). He played American Legion Baseball and was a member of the Mendon MO Ball Club winning the State championship in 1951. He was also a member of both the Pankey Oilers and Pepsi men's softball teams, which made multiple State appearances over the years. He most likely played every position during his career but was foremost a catcher, a pitcher, or a first baseman. Vernon also loved watching college basketball and football, but nothing compared to his love of baseball. He was a long time Kansas City Royals season ticket holder and also loved the Kansas City Chiefs. Vernon lived a long healthy life that allowed him to travel and enjoy his grandchildren in their sports. Survivors include his children, Laurinda Davison of Chillicothe and Stephen Smith of Kingsport, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Edward Lee Enyeart and wife, Kathleen of Kansas City and Phillip Stephen Davison and wife, Ashlea of Portland, Oregon; five great-grandchildren, Ian Enyeart, Alec Enyeart, Owen Fisher, Addy Fisher, and Izzy Fisher all of Kansas City; and one son-in-law, Brent Hazelrigg of Columbia. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Verna Suzanne Hazelrigg; son-in-law, Roy Davison; one sister, Norma Jenkins; and two brothers, Loren Smith and Virgil Smith. Their first 4 children were born before they moved to Independence, MO in 1963 having Gary in 1964. Janice worked for Kmart followed by Sams Club and happily retired in 2010. She loved traveling, camping and time spent at the lake. Janice was actively involved with her family and church and was known to be a great cook. She was a very loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arnold; son, Timothy; 2 sisters: Julene and Marjorie and brother, Gerald Baker.
