Lakeland, FL
George Wilford Hilson, known affectionately by those close to him as George, passed away of natural causes on September 9, 2023, in Lakeland, Florida, just days shy of his 90th birthday. Born on September 12, 1933, in Perry, Florida, George lived a life characterized by selflessness, wisdom, and an unmatched skill for all things handy. George's early years were spent in Perry, where he grew up understanding the value of hard work and community. These values served him well when he enlisted in the U. S. Navy, where he served his country with pride and dedication. Upon his return to civilian life, George channeled his discipline and tenacity into a successful career in the trucking industry, owning and operating two businesses, G & M Trucking and H & H Trucking. His hard work and dedication to his career were a testament to his character and commitment to providing for his family. Despite his professional success, George's greatest joy in life was his family, particularly his four beloved grandchildren: Samuel Tony Hilson, Philip Hilson, William (Bill) Hilson, and Jeffrey Hilson. George was a doting and devoted grandfather, taking every opportunity to express his love and pride for his grandchildren. His eyes would light up at the mention of their names, and his love for them was evident in every interaction. Known for his love of good food, George was often the first to arrive at family gatherings and the last to leave the dinner table. He appreciated the simple pleasures of life and cherished the moments spent around the dinner table with family and friends. His laughter and joy during these moments will be dearly missed. George was also known for his handy skills. There was no task too big or too small for him to handle. His family often joked that if George couldn't fix it, then it was truly broken. His hands, though weathered and worn from years of hard work, were always ready to help others. As a man of wisdom, George often shared words of advice and encouragement with those around him. He embodied the quote by Benjamin Franklin, "Well done is better than well said. " His actions indeed spoke louder than his words, and his life was a testament to his belief in hard work, integrity, and love for his family. George's life was marked by selfless service, wisdom, and a handy nature that endeared him to many. His legacy will continue to live on through his grandchildren, who will remember him as a loving and supportive figure in their lives, always ready with a kind word, a helping hand, or a hearty meal. George Wilford Hilson's life was a beacon of light, love, and service. As we remember him, let us celebrate the remarkable life he led and the profound impact he had on those fortunate enough to have known him. He will be greatly missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts and memories of his loved ones. George's family will receive friends Thursday September 14, 2023 from 12:00 noon till 1:00pm when a funeral service will follow.
