Sarah Tiahrt

Sarah Tiahrt

Age - 96

December 10, 2023

On the 8th of December, 2023, Sarah Ella Marcine Tiahrt traded the terrestrial raiment of the present to receive the timeless robes prepared for her by our Holy Savior. In a moment, she stepped from where we are, to where we all hope to go. Treasured wife, esteemed mother, cherished mentor, and valued confidant, Marcine's generous spirit welcomed and embraced everyone she met. Sarah Ella Marcine Steele was born Anno Domini September 17, 1927, to Jessie May Braden Steele and John William Steele. John was putting up hay, and Jessie gave birth at home. Jessie's doctor had told her that she would have no children, but the hand of God would not be stayed by any medical prognosis. Marcine was born miraculously, and three years later, her sister Mary Ruth followed her. Tragically, Jessie died when Marcine was just eight. Her father never complained about being a single parent and never looked back. Marcine enrolled in Central Bible College in 1945 and, in 1946, met her best friend and soulmate there, a WWII veteran named Wilbur E. Tiahrt. Wilbur and Marcine married Friday, November 26, 1948, in the Assemblies of God Church in the bustling community of Meckling, SD. Marcine and Wilbur began their life together pastoring a small church in Naper, Nebraska. They went on to pastor churches in Yankton, South Dakota, and Coleridge, Nebraska. None of these churches could support full-time pastors, so Wilbur worked on the farm for Marcine's father. And the farm is where they raised their children. And each of Marcine's children was blessed by her soul-enriching affirmation that formed a rock-solid foundation on which to build a career and a life. Marcine's youngest, Susan Janos, was the vice-president of marketing for the Harrison publishing empire but gave up the executive life to serve as a chaplain. Sara Steever is the former President and current Chief Technical Officer of Paulsen Agency, a marketing agency with a worldwide clientele. Todd served eight terms in the House as a United States Representative and now works as an advocate for the blind. Thomas teaches business analytics and statistics at the University of South Dakota. Marcine served in a variety of roles as an organizer, administrator, facilitator, teacher, and presenter for Sunday School, Women's Aglow, The Gideons International, VFW Auxiliary, Youth-for-Christ, and Missionettes. Even in her nineties, she held a weekly meeting praying for everyone from the family members of the attendees to the President of the United States. Marcine always focused on helping others; people were central, and everything else revolved around their importance. Marcine's absence from the life temporal is grieved by all who knew her kindness, warmth, and hospitality. But Marcine's presence in the life eternal was anticipated by all who knew her gentle spirit, perseverance, endurance, and panoramic focus. Marcine embraced the important issues and worked hard to play her part in resolving them. Mater ave atque vale. We shall miss you, Mother. But we shall see you again. Marcine was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur E. Tiahrt, her parents, John William and Jessie May Braden Steele; her sister, Mary Ruth (John) Armstrong and grandson Luke Tiahrt. She is survived by her son Todd (Vicki) Tiahrt of Goddard, KS, Thomas (Cheryl) Tiahrt of Wakonda, Sara (John) Steever of Lennox, SD, and Susan (Christopher) Janos of Lexington, KY. In addition, she is survived by grandchildren Jessica (Liam) Healy, John (Ashley) Tiahrt, Christian Janos, Raleigh (Monica) Tiahrt, Skylar (Sabrina) Tiahrt, Kenan Tiahrt, Michael Janos, John (Anna) Steever, and Elizabeth Steever, along with twelve great-grandchildren. Kober Funeral Home of Vermillion has been entrusted with this service. Condolences may be posted online at www. KoberFuneralHome. com.Show more

Janet Sunde

Janet Sunde

Age - 72

November 8, 2023

Janet Marie Sunde, 72, of Vermillion SD passed away at Avera Mckennan Hospital on Sunday, October 22, 2023. Per her request, no public services are planned but private family services will be held at a later date. Janet was born on February 16, 1951, in Estherville, Iowa to Merlyn "Jack" and Lillian Myers. Her childhood was filled with playing with her siblings and cousins. She loved the outdoors and spent many fun filled days exploring with her cousin and best friend Sue Wellnitz. Her teen years were a time of a few discoveries that would endure for the rest of her life; her hatred for algebra, her passion for literature, and her love of her future husband Richard. Janet married Richard "Dick" Sunde on September 25, 1970, in Estherville, Ia. Richard and Janet would go on to have two sons, Patrick and Paul. Janet took on many challenges in her life with the through line being her love of helping others. The nursery at Trinity Lutheran Church and the Vermillion Food Pantry both thrived while she volunteered. Janet along with her husband Richard also created a fund which provided Christmas presents and assistance to local families in need. Her kindness wasn’t limited to humans. She also helped fund dog rescues locally and across the country. She personally saved many dogs that would go on to become cherished members of her family. While accomplishing great things through her philanthropy she also worked as a real estate appraiser, toy store co-owner, and office manager for Richard's Insurance office. Her greatest impact however was her day-to-day interactions with people. Janet had an amazing gift of lifting the spirits of everyone she was around. People smiled easier and laughed harder while talking with Janet. She was a person that genuinely wanted the best for everyone and that came through as she listened without judgement and advised without preaching. With these amazing qualities, lifelong relationships blossomed with folks of all walks of life. Undoubtedly Janets greatest love and focus was her family. Her husband, Richard, was blessed with unwavering love and support through all his endeavors. Starting a business, midnight home remodels, and traveling throughout the world, they were partners through it all. When it came to her sons, and their friends, her mothering is the stuff of legend. If you were lucky enough to be in her galaxy you were going to be loved and cared for. That orbit expanded with the wife of Paul, Anita and the partner of Patrick, Jason. Anita and Jason instantly became beloved members of the Sunde clan. In 2001, Jackson was born to Paul and his wife Anita Walsh-Sunde. This event transformed Janet into perhaps her greatest role, "The Oma-nator". Another grandson, Macallister, followed in 2007. These two boys would experience the concentrated pure love, joy and magic that could only come from "The Oma". Oma and Opa took the boys on countless adventures from the Black Hills of South Dakota to the wilderness of Northern Minnesota, and the beaches of the Gulf Coast that delighted and entertained all involved. Janet is lovingly survived by her husband, Richard, their children; Patrick Sunde (Jason Selenske) Eagan, MN, Paul Sunde (Anita Walsh-Sunde) Vermillion, SD; her grandchildren, Jackson Sunde (Trinity Sunde) Vermillion, SD; Macallister Sunde Vermillion, SD; siblings: Sharon (Richard) Kelly of Mason City, IA; Sandy (J. C. ) Dawald of Northwood, IA; John (Yvonne) Myers of Muskogee, OK; Mary Myers of Wagoner, OK; Jim (Heidi) Myers Sioux Falls, SD and many special nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents Merlyn and Lillian Myers, her in-laws Donald and Ruth Sunde, her brother Joseph Myers. In lieu of flowers or memorials, the family requests donations to the animal rescue organization of your choice. We also ask that you take a moment to hug your child, grandchild, friend. Walk in the woods for a moment, an hour or a day. Observe the beauty of the sunset, gaze at the moon and stars, plant a flower. These are the things Janet held sacred and she would be most honored to have you carry forward.Show more

Larry Bak

Larry Bak

Age - 82

November 8, 2023

Larry Dean Bak April 12, 1941 - October 23rd, 2023 It’s difficult to describe the full life Larry lived in just a dash. Larry was born in Yankton, SD to Art and Helen Bak. Larry grew up in Irene, SD, with brothers Dave and Ronnie, and sister Vicki. He played baseball, basketball, and football back in the day. He was also an avid outdoorsman who loved to go camping, fishing, and hunting. He always loved to go watch a ball game, because he really enjoyed sports and just being around people. Oh by the way, Larry’s a diehard Vikings and Twins fan. Larry loved all animals (and they loved him). You’d rarely catch him without a dog or cat somewhere in his vicinity. He has had many animals throughout the years that he has loved dearly. He was always the type of person to help someone in need, whether that be stopping and helping someone on the side of the road, fixing someone’s plumbing, helping with electrical work, or just chatting with someone at morning coffee, he was always there. Larry had the best sense of humor. If you were around him, you were probably laughing, and if you were lucky enough to hear him laugh, you’ll probably never forget it. He had the most contagious laugh. Also, if you ever happen to drive by Larry’s house while he was sitting out front, he either waived, or shook his fist at you, if you happened to be driving too fast, according to Larry, down Highway 46. He was also quick to let you know that he was a proud Norwegian, especially if you weren’t. Larry was always a hard worker and has had many jobs over the years from working at Bak’s Electric, Ace Hardware, and being on staff at Celebrate Church in Sioux Falls. Above all though, Larry loved two things the most, and that is his family, and Jesus. He leaves behind his loving wife Carol whom he adored. If you ever had the privilege of seeing them dance, you witnessed two of the best dancers out there! They floated on air! They were married for 60 wonderful years, and they were by each other’s side right down to the very end. He also leaves behind his son Dan, who was the light of his world. Proud Papa in every sense of the word. Larry and Carol never missed any of Dan’s ball games, he coached Dan’s baseball teams, and the father and son duo did many projects together. If you asked Larry, the reason that they were successful in completing their projects, it’s because they were both Norwegian. (Even though they both have some Dane in them too. ) Once again, Larry’s sense of humor was on display! In the end, while Larry was battling cancer and in the fight of his life in the hospitals, he would always say that he just wanted to go home. Be at his home, with his family, and his faithful cat Rudy on his lap. However, Larry’s illness would not allow him to go back to his home in Irene. Carol and Dan now find comfort in knowing that Larry did finally get to go home. Home with Jesus.Show more
