Jeffry Michael Behm was born June 18, 1956, the third child of Donald and Jean (McCrickard) Behm and baptized at St. Patrick's parish, Missouri Valley, IA. Jeff grew up in Storm Lake, graduating from St. Mary's High School in 1974 where he excelled at baseball and was a successful pitcher on the varsity baseball team. On December 20, 1980, Jeff married Julia Kitson from Janesville, WI. God blessed them with two sons, Patrick Michael and Thomas Jeffry, whom they faithfully raised to be disciples of Jesus Christ. Jeff loved spending time with his family and sought ways to protect, provide and serve them. Holiday gatherings with family were always a highlight for Jeff, who was always jovial and laughing, warm and welcoming, quick with a quip or joke. Jeff spent most of his working years as a department manager with Hy-Vee Food Stores in Fort Dodge, IA; Harlan, IA; Columbus, NE before finally returning to Storm Lake in 1989. In 2009 Jeff was awarded Hy-Vee's Legendary Customer Service Award, the highest honor Hy-Vee bestows on an employee. He demonstrated the midwest hard work ethic and took Hy-Vee's motto of a "helpful smile in every aisle" quite literally, always striving to be friendly and courteous to all. He was a listening ear to customers, giving hugs and encouragement to so many that he referred to as, "My friend," because you were his friend. To many youth experiencing their first job, Jeff taught hard work, honesty, responsibility, the importance of completing the task at hand, and commitment to the employer. Jeff was an avid fan of the Oklahoma Sooners and would frequently try to structure his fall Saturdays around their football games. Among his favorite Sooner memories were the 1971 Thanksgiving Day "Game of the Century" where Nebraska beat their archrival Oklahoma in the final moments of the game, the team's national championship in the year 2000, and traveling to Norman for the 50th Anniversary of Oklahoma-Nebraska Game of the Century in 2021 with Julie and Pat. Jeff cherished the quiet time he could spend at home with Julie, Pat, and Tom. Whether it was playing catch in the backyard with the boys, taking the dogs for a walk, or just sitting on the deck enjoying a cold Pepsi, Jeff was happy and content at home. In a world that prides itself on being ever busier, Jeff found comfort in the simple things of life-a bike ride, going for a walk, humming a silly song, keeping his yard tidy or simply watching the sun rise as he gazed across the backyard. Jeff will be remembered as a friendly, hard-working Hy-Vee employee, as an Oklahoma fan, as a family man, and everyone\u0027s friend. But most importantly, over and above everything else, Jeff's family hopes he will be remembered as a man of God, a disciple of our Lord. He was committed to daily prayer, often praying as he knelt to stock shelves at Hy-Vee. Sunday Mass was central to his life and he never missed a Sunday or Holy Day, even while traveling. He was especially devoted to the Rosary, the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, and the Chaplet of St. Michael the Archangel. Jeff frequently told everyone he met that he "just wanted to make it to heaven. " Jeff is survived by his wife of nearly 43 years, Julia (Kitson) Behm; sons: Fr. Patrick Behm of Carroll; Thomas (Marcia) Behm of Centennial, CO; siblings: Pam Sutton (Ted Hessleguesser) of Omaha, NE; Rod (Judy) Behm of Carroll; Tracy (Ed) Bredvick of Storm Lake; Mike (Norma) Behm of Storm Lake; father-in-law: Raymond Kitson; brother-in-law: Stan (Robyn) Kitson; brother-in-law: Doug (Phoebe) Kitson; sister-in-law: Marjie (Dave) Trummel; brother-in-law: Don (Marte) Kitson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents: Donald and Jean Behm; mother-in-law: Jeanne Anne Kitson; brother-in-law: Randy Sutton; and sister-in-law: Janet Kitson. From the ages of one to six, Ronald lived in Storm Lake, Iowa. When he turned seven, his family moved to the Fairview Community northwest of Storm Lake. Ronald graduated from Fairview School, Class of 1957. He married the former AnnaBelle Rassler in St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake on December 28, 1958. Upon graduation, Ronald went to work for DeKalb Corn Processers in Storm Lake, where his dad, Conrad, had also worked. In the fall of '57, he began working for Peterson \u0026amp; Co. General Merchandise and Grocery in Alta, Iowa. This was followed by his beginning as a Carpenter for Edwin Buckendahl General Contractor of Alta. When Wilson and Co. opened in Cherokee in 1965, he began working there for the next forty and a half years before retiring in 2006. Ronald and AnnaBelle lived in their home in Cherokee for twenty-eight years before moving to their current home near the lake in 2018, where he lived until the time of his passing. Along the way, he enjoyed his dogs, Spike who perished in a barn fire and the family farm, and his Collie Gus along with several others and his last Xanadu II, a Lhasa Apso which was his great pleasure. He was a humble man, quiet, unassuming. He enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, the hills, and county parks near our home in Peterson before moving into their 1892 mail order Queen Anne Victorian Home in Sutherland, Iowa. After moving to Cherokee in 1986, he could indulge in gardening again. He was so proud that our yard received Yard of the Month twice and was host to the City of Cherokee Garden Tour. Our son, Scott Wade was born March 11, 1962. On July 6, 1963, Scott departed for Heaven. Son Troy Ronald was born April 12, 1963 and passed away in Cherokee on July 30, 2010. Following our loss of Scottie, we moved from Alta to Peterson and then to Sutherland where we raised our family in our 1892 Queen Anne Victorian home. Ron took great pride in restoring it. We moved back to Storm Lake in 1982, our hometown area, until moving to Cherokee in 1986 where we stayed until retiring and moving back to our present home in Storm Lake in 2018 after 32 years. He loved to travel in our C-J5 Jeep or Annie's convertible through the River Valley Hills on his motorcycle. We toured Missouri, Colorado several times, Utah, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wisconsin as well as a childhood trip to Arizona. He also was pleased to be a balloon chase team during Storm Lake Balloon races because he knew the area and we had a CB before cell phones to be in touch with the captains. He belonged to Union UFC Local 179 for forty and a half years, he retired from IBP which began life as Wilson Foods inc. After retirement he became reluctant Gardener, a willing Gardener and after moving back to Storm Lake a knowledgeable and relentless Gardener, where he enjoyed the fruits of his labor, sitting for hours in his backyard, feeding squirrels and the birds which he did up to a week before his passing. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Emil and Ada (Johnson) Chindlund; Fred and Martha (Hintz) Langner; parents: Conrad and Frances (Langner) Chindlund; sister: Phyllis (Chindlund) Rehnstrom; brother-in-law: Merrill Rehnstrom; parents-in-law: Albert Rassler; Isabel Rassler Anderson; brothers-in-law: Ed Rassler; Ray Rassler; Jerry Buckendahl; Kelly Meyer; sisters-in-law: Vernice Buckendahl; Velma Totten; and sons: Scott Wade Chindlund; Troy Ronald Chindlund. Amen. God has blessed us all. For 65 years, we've been blessed, we may not have made the Anniversary date by a couple of months, but we've been a part of each other's lives for more than those 65 years. Since we danced to Duke Ellington at the Cobb to celebrate our August 7th engagement, because we danced the last dance Cobblestone held the night it closed, it would have been so fitting to finish at Cobblestone with a big celebration since we danced so much of our life and Cobb is in the process of reopening after sitting dormant for all their years. It was for us a case of "Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?" Rest in peace my Beloved, Ron. "Show more
